ATREA VENTILATION SYSTEM

ATREA VENTILATION SYSTEM

System description
The ventilation system provides equal pressure ventilation with heat
recovery for houses and multi-storey apartment blocks, with optional
supply air reheating, pre-cooling in summer and the efficient
utilisation of all internal and external energy gains.
A properly designed ventilation system ensures the supply of fresh
filtered air into each room with occupancy and kitchen, with
thesimultaneous extraction of air from sanitary facilities, toilets,
bathrooms and kitchens.
ATREA offers this system as a full modular set that consists
ofthefollowing main parts:
DUPLEX EC4 and ECV4 series ventilation units with heat recovery
A full measurement and control system that allows controlling
other parts of the system such as zone dampers
and a ground-coupled heat exchanger as well
A comprehensive range of ATREAs HVAC ducts and fittings
suitable for every version required
Application in low-energy and passive houses
In low-energy houses the ventilation system complements their basic
heating system (e.g. central heaters, underfloor heating etc.).
In passive houses in the Czech Republic and Slovakia we recommend
besides the reheating of post-heat recovery air supplied
tothepremises installing an additional heating system to ensure
optimum relative humidity in the rooms is maintained
andoverventilation during heating is thus prevented. They can also
becombined with afireplace insert or another bivalent source.
Whenhigher cooling capacities or heating provided solely via a HVAC
system are required, we recommend selecting units with air
recirculation such as DUPLEX R_4 dual-zone series.

Designing a ventilation system

ATREA has compiled detailed planning documentation
fordesigning a ventilation system that together with component
catalogues and special design software provide planners with all
necessary data for the right design.
Based on long-term measurements and experience with
ventilation systems in residential buildings ATREA recommends
sizing ventilation performances according to EN 15 251
Class2 see the highlighted part of the table below.
Advantages of ventilation systems
Ensure permanent air changes necessary for hygienic
reasons with a possibility of one-off increases (e.g. by an
external signal from toilets, bathrooms, kitchens or other
inputs on the basis of users immediate requirements)
Savings on ventilation costs by up to 90 % thanks to highly
efficient heat recovery exchangers
Elimination of mold formation
Elimination of thermal discomfort due to air supply with
temperature differences kept to a minimum (again as aresult
of heat recovery with high efficiency)
Utilisation of all internal and external thermal gains from the
flat space for the heat recovery pre-heating of ventilation air
The supply of perfectly filtered air (through Class G4 or F7
filters) significantly reduces the occurrence of allergies
andrespiratory diseases
When the unit is set to full performance (via a by-pass),
cooling is possible in summer, particularly through the supply
of night filtered air
A full-range modular system allows for easy or even DIY
installation

Heat recovery principle

Heat transfer occurs through the separating walls of a heat exchanger in winter
warmer exhaust air preheats colder supply air. The same principle is applied also
insummer for cool recovery.
In winter time humidity condensates in exhaust air. This condensate increases heat
recovery efficiency through improved heat transfer and is continuously drained into
asewer system.
Significance of heat recovery
An energy-optimised heat recovery exchanger reaches a highly economical ratio between
power consumption (to run fans), air performance and heat recovery.
The fan input vs. heat recovery gain ratio during ventilation reaches an energy efficiency
of 17 25, i.e. from 1 W of power used to run a DUPLEX EC4 up to 25 W is recovered
from exhaust air. Effective ratio 1 : 25

DUPLEX EC4, ECV4

DESCRIPTION OF DUPLEX EC4, ECV4 UNITS

Intended use
The new, already 4th generation of DUPLEX heat recovery units,
is supplied in two basic ranges: the DUPLEX EC4 under-ceiling
type and the DUPLEX ECV4 vertical type.
The units are intended for the comfort ventilation of all types
ofresidential and civil premises. They are particularly suitable
forlow-energy and passive houses and flats in apartment
buildings with a decentralized ventilation system.
General description
The units housing with efficient 30 mm thick polyurethane
insulation (U = 0,65 Wm-2K-1) and reduced thermal bridging has
a built-in, vortex-type counter-flow heat exchanger made
ofplastic (efficiency up to 95 %), two free wheel type fans with
electronic EC control and optional additional constant air flow
control, G4 supply and exhaust air filters upstream the heat
recovery exchanger, an automatically controlled by-pass damper,
a control module and a connecting terminal board. Condensate
outlets in the doors in the EC4 under-ceiling type are prepared
for both operational directions of the unit. Connecting ports are
of a circular type for flexible or rigid ducts with thermal bridging
reduction. Access to the unit is provided via a hinged door
withsecuring latches.

Advantages of the units

Free wheel, EC type fans built-in as standard are outstanding
fortheir low power input and excellent speed control
Higher performances of the units enable intensive venting bouts
and summer ventilation
A heat recovery efficiency of up to 95 % thanks to the new
generation of heat recovery exchangers
Excellent thermal and insulation parameters of the units housing
with reduced thermal bridging
A by-pass built in as standard, not requiring any additional space;
moreover, due to its design it ensures 100 % by-pass in by-pass
mode without mutual heat transfers
The two standard types of control systems available meet all
user requirements
.Aunits a simpler and cheaper basic control system
.D units a new, optionally installed digital control system
enabling to connect a wide range ofsensors and other inputs,
thecontrol of shut-off and zone ductwork dampers, thecontrol
ofheaters or the houses heating system etc. Inaddition,
itcontains as standard a built-in web server to allow control
viathe Internet
An option to fit built-in electric or external electric or hot-water
based air heaters
An option of the mirror-wise change of the right hand / left hand
side position of EC4 units by simply changing the parameter
inthe control system (.D units) or by simple reconnection (.A units)
Very low height H allowing installation in false ceiling voids

INSTALLATION OF UNITS

DUPLEX EC4.A ANALOG CONTROL SYSTEM

The simplified control system is a choice for undemanding systems

requiring only the basic functions of measurement and control.
The unit is controlled by the CP 04 RA controller with a mechanical knob
for performance control. It allows connecting one 230 V external signal
for one-off ventilation performance increases (e.g. a signal from atoilet
or bathroom) and one 010 V input for performance control (e.g. signal
from CO2 sensor or relative humidity sensor).
Optionally the system can be additionaly equiped with
230 V

the RA4-E expansion module to include a24 V DC power supply

for sensors, shut-off damper control (24 V DC), two230V
external inputs to increase performance (withadjustable delay
stop), thecontrol of integrated EDO electric reheater
orexternal EPO-V electric preheater. Thecontrol of hot-water
based reheaters or electric preheaters is not possible.

DUPLEX EC4.D DIGITAL CONTROL SYSTEM

General description
The RD4 digital control module represents the most modern method
ofcontrolling the unit. It provides all basic functions and at the same time
contains a range of inputs and outputs to connect with optional sensors
such as those of CO2 and relative humidity, signals from rooms (toilets,
bathrooms, kitchens), heating systems including shut-off valves
orshut-off dampers in ducts.
Additionally it contains a web-server and the option of Internet access.
The unit with the digital module may be controlled:
a) By the CP 18 RD or CP 19 RD series controller with graphic display
b) Without a controller, only via 010 V voltage (e.g. from a CO2 sensor
or through a higher-ranking system). Control via external signals
and other automatic ventilation functions remain.
c) Via a built-in intelligent web-server that allows control and setting
viaa web application and can also be used for versions a) and b).
d) By an external control system via a standard Modbus TCP interface.
Functions
The control module provides all basic functions of the unit:
Programming various ventilation performances for the day and week
Continuous control of both fans, with a constant performance function
in the CF version (i.e. an automatic change of the performance level
toreach the desired flow rate directly in m3/h)
Automatic control of the by-pass damper (supply air by-passing)
according to outdoor air temperature
Electric heater (an optional extra) control for constant supply air
temperature within a range of 15 to 50 C (maximum temperature
depends on the capacity of the electric heater installed) or air
temperature control according to a programmed temperature
differential against required interior temperature (may be changed
automatically according to settings during a day)
Hot-water based heater (an optional extra) switching, setting supply air
temperature by controlling the mixing manifold or the heating water
choke valve via a 0 10 V signal, including the anti-freeze protection
ofthe hot-water based heater (by ADS 120 sensor)

Anti-freeze protection of the heat recovery exchanger

Switching to a required performance level when started via
an external signal (e.g. from the toilet, bathroom, kitchen)
with programmable start and run-down
Supply and extraction shut-off damper control, and the control
of two zone ventilation dampers and a kitchen extraction
damper (the dampers are not included) 24 V DC
An automatic operation option according to sensors
CO2 concentration, relative humidity or VOC (optional extras)
a 010 V signal or a switch contact
Depending on settings the unit enables a periodic venting
mode the unit is idle and switches ventilation on at set
intervals
Automatic ventilation time settings depending on occupancy
and the air-tightness of the building during periodic
ventilation or when burst ventilation is started
CP RD series controllers
They are intended for setting basic ventilation modes
anddisplaying the status of the ventilation unit including failure
conditions. It allows the user to access standard functions
orprogram operating modes that can be run manually
orautomatically according to weekly program settings.
Thecontroller also enables to set a temporary party / holiday
mode and includes an integrated room thermostat with
aweekly heating / cooling mode that can control a simple
heating system using the control module functions.
All data are shown on a well-arranged graphic display. Settings
and control are done via a rotary knob.
