01 Greetings in Business Settings


Proper etiquette is important in business greetings. Make sure to use polite language
such as "please" and "thank you". Appropriate titles and gestures should also be used.
Shaking hands is common in most English speaking countries. It is also important to
smile.

English speakers dont always say


hello and how are you?
If someone says Hello, you MUST
respond with Hello too!

Introduce yourself with name and title.

Shake hands if appropriate.

Give or accept directions.

Do not use "lady" instead of madam. It


sounds impolite

Don't say
May I help you, lady?
Excuse me, lady. Could you help me?
Could you please repeat that, lady?
Instead, say
May I help you, madam?

answer with nothing or not much.)

Responses

Most people answer with fine, good or alright.

Im pleased to [finally] meet you.

Its nice to [finally] meet you.

Im a bit tired after lunch.

My day is flying by! There is not enough time in a day!

I had some problems at my hotel this morning, but its OK now.
