Greeting & Salutation

Formal: For people we do not know, or people we need to be polite to

(like the boss!)

Neutral/general for people we do not know well Informal: For friends and family.
"Excuse me, but would you mind passing the salt, please?" (very

formal) Can you pass me the salt please?" (neutral) "Salt! (very informal!)

Types of Introduction
People make introductions for many reasons:
For business ("May I present Mr. Nair of Windsor supplies"). If two of your friends are meeting for the first time (Mary - this is

Kumar - we play tennis together").

It may be impersonal ("Hello, I'm nurse Krupa. I am here to take

your temperature.")

Examples: Formal Introduction

Mr. A: Mr. Thompson, this is Professor Jones. Thompson: Professor Jones. I'm pleased to meet you. Mr. A: Mr. Thompson, may I present Professor Jones. Thompson: How do you do?

("How do you do?" does not mean "what do you do?" It does not mean anything. It is just a polite way to say "hello" when you are introduced.) Mr. A: Allow me to present Professor Jones. Thompson: I'm delighted to meet you, Professor. My name is Bob Thompson. (You should say your name if the person who introduces you does not say it.)
We use formal introductions on formal occasions. For important business, meeting important people or (some!) weddings and funerals, formal language is safest.

Examples: General / Neutral

Mr. A: Mr. Thompson, do you know Professor Jones? Thompson: How are you, Professor? This is Jasmine Jones. Jasmine: I'm pleased to meet you. Professor: Bob , Jasmine. It's nice to meet you.

Examples: Informal
Bob, meet Jane How are you, Jane? Bob, this is Jane. Hi, Jane.

You don't know Jane, do you? No, hi Jane, I'm Bob.

Informal introductions are for people we meet at parties, or when we are with friends. We use only the first name, and we don't say the family names. Some other suggestions. With formal introductions, and some general introductions, you shake hands. You don't usually shake hands in impersonal introductions. With informal introductions you shake hands if you are near that person.

Introducing yourself
"I am Police Officer Arora, and I am arresting you for ... "I'm Prashant Garg, your pilot on this flight ... "Hi, I'm Nisha, your tour guide ..." When people introduce themselves, they usually say why they are introducing themselves. Excuse me, I don't think we have met, my name is Bob Thompson. (Formal) May I introduce myself? I'm Bob Thompson. (Formal) Hello, I'm Jane. General/neutral) You must be Bob Thompson. I'm Jane Jones. (General/neutral) Hello Bob, I'm Jane. Informal) Are you Bob Thompson? I'm Jane Jones. Informal)

Small Talk Etiquette

Things people talk about which are not important are known as "small

talk".
Good small talk subjects are: The weather, what you are doing at the

party, why you are in the country, festivals, food, and travel. You can also talk about your job.
In every country there are things you can talk about with people you

have just met. And there are other things you can't talk about.
There is an old rule that says "Don't talk about money, sex or politics

with people you don't know well." It is a good rule.

Small Talk Etiquette

Small talk is not really about the weather, or the traffic, or the food. They are a way of carrying on with the introduction, so that you can

measure the other person, and decide if you want to see more of them. The other person is doing the same thing with you - deciding "is this a nice/interesting person? Do I want to see this person again?"

Here are some situations in which you meet people. Look at each

situation, and at the three possible answers below it. Sometimes one of these answers is correct, sometimes two answers are correct.
You meet someone you know. He says - "How are you, George?
Fine, and you? I'm pleased to meet you. Good day to you.

You meet someone on business. She says - "How do you do?

I'm doing well, thanks. How do you do? Fine, and you?

In a restaurant, the waiter says - "I'm Joe, do you want to order?

Hi Joe. Not yet, Thanks. I'm pleased to meet you. In a moment, thanks.

You meet someone new at work. She says - "Hello. I'm Smita Naik.
Hello, I'm Jill Fernandes. I'm pleased to meet you. I'm Jill Fernandes. I am Ms. Fernandes. How do you do?

A policeman stops your car. He says - " I'm PC Agarwal. May I see your

licence? Yes, of course. Hello, I'm Jill Fernandes. Here you are.

You go to see your bank manager. He says - "Good afternoon, Miss

Smith. Hello, I'm Jill Smith. How are you, Mr. Borde? Good afternoon, Mr. Borde.
