Product and Service Design

The Nirvana Funeral Homes will provide services that are demanded by the
market who wants to endure a pleasant experience. In order to accomplish this, the
business will offer facilities and services to address their needs. Funerals bring people
together who haven't seen each other in years, even decades. In traditional services, old
companions like families and old friends will meet for a few hours and bid their
goodbyes afterwards. The business will capture the opportunity to bring people together,
and to re-form the lines of support for those who live. To accomplish this, the business
will offer:
1. a reception hall where meals and refreshments may be catered;
2. electronic presentation and projection of photos and films of the deceased, also
available on the website;
3. e-burial will also offer if the family requested it to have for their relatives outside
the country who will not able to go to the wake of the deceased;
4. soft background music selected by the family, if requested;
5. discreet areas where small groups may form for intimate discussions;
6. two rooms with couches and chairs for private meetings;
7. use of the chapel for funeral services; and
8. Professional services of the director and staff. There will be one person who will
guide the family through the entire process.

35
Aside from the offerings that may bind the family ties again, the business also
compromise the following:
1. Caskets. Nirvana Funeral Homes will offer two (2) selection of caskets made of
wood and metal, each selection would have 4 kinds, for the wood type the
business have imperial, angel classic, angel premium and emperor premium while
for metal type the business have stainless sanctuary, 18 gauge Kessler, copper
lilac, and sunset bronze. The business has corporate agreements with a casket
supplier located within Imus, Cavite. To differentiate the Nirvana Funeral Home
and to bolster its market position as the place for people who want a different kind
of funeral, the business will supplement its offerings with caskets more interesting
and diverse than the mass-produced caskets generally offered;
2. Remembrance Products, including paper and electronic products to celebrate the
life of the deceased. Digital photographs and films will be used during the
reception and posted on our website, if desired;
3. Transportation that includes the use of van to transfer the body from the place of
death to the funeral house and the hearse to transport the deceased to the
cemetery; and
4. Embalming services. Embalming has been a traditionally assumed service, but
consumers are mandated by federal law to be advised that it's not required, except
in certain rare cases. Embalming allowed funerals with viewing to take place
more than 72 hours after death without noticeable decomposition. It is still the
industry standard, and will be available at the Nirvana Funeral Homes.

hours open every day.

The Service Process - From death to funeral

Transfer the body

40
Once the family of the dead person acquires the service of Nirvana
Funeral Home, the business will be obliged to send helpers to pick up the body of
the dead person from the hospital or nursing home where the person died.
However, if the person dies from un-natural causes (such as an accident, murder,
suicide, etc) then the body will be taken to the medico-legal officer. If this is the
case then an autopsy and investigation is done before the body is released. Once
the body is released then the business will be obliged to send helpers to fetch the
body from the medico-legal officer.
Registration
1. While the transferring process of the body is being done, the undertaker
(funeral arranger) will discuss the registration that needs to be done after
that forms will be given for the process of getting the death certificate of
the deceased at the city municipality, it is about the biographical questions
regarding the deceased and other information that the immediate family
needs to process.
2. During the discussion the undertaker will also discuss the burial plan
which includes the list of packages offered to the clients so they can
choose what package they want for the deceased.

Billing Arrangement
Undertaker will arrange the billing statement of the fees of the funeral
service, Cash Advances will be needed (at least half of the package price).
Prepare the body

41
1. When the helpers return in the funeral home they will directly bring the
body in the mortuary. The first thing they will do is to unload the body
into the mortuary tray. The head of the body will put on a "head block",
basically the head block elevates the head above the abdomen. This act
prevents the body from "purging". Purging is an unpleasant "leakage"
from the mouth or nose. The fluids that leak out can be anything from
blood to bile and are sometimes smelly and difficult to clean up.
2. The embalmer will assess the body. The first thing he will do is to remove
the body from the bag or anything where it is wrapped from during the
transferring process.
3. The clothing that is on the body will be taken off. Most of the bodies wear
hospital gown. This is a paper like gown that can simply be cut off with a
pair of scissors. However if the body is in 'normal' clothing then more
work needs to be done. Things like shoes, pants and jackets are removed
first, then shirts or tops. Socks and underwear are left until last as it
makes getting the other clothes off easier.
-Valuables are either left on the body or bagged up and will be
returned to the family.
4. The embalmer will document any property found on the person, as well as
any cuts, bruises, or other discolorations during the time and will be stated
in the embalming reports.
5. The embalmer will then clean the body. Most bodies do not need much
work here (depending on culture of the deceased and mourners). Only if
the body is dirty or messy it will be hard to clean.
6. The body will be embalmed (still depends on the situation).
Embalming

42
There are two main types of embalming; TP (or temporary preservation)
and Full embalm.
- The TP method is a simple and quick process to just replace blood with
preservation fluids. A trocar is also used to remove and replace fluids inside the
torso of the body. This method is quick and will not preserve a body forever, but
it does get rid of fluids and can preserve a body for a long time. This method
must be used on all bodies that go into crypts or vaults.
-The full embalm method is a much more intensive and difficult process.
Not only is the blood replaced but all organs are actually removed. With the TP
method the abdomen is essentially 'stabbed' with the trocar, but in a full embalm
the torso is cut open and every organ is removed (including the brain). The
organs are then diced up into chunks. This can be done with scissors, knives or
whatever the embalmer prefers. Next the organs are dried with a special
preserving power. This powder is scattered into the open and empty torso before
the organs are put back. The body is sewed up and "made like new" as they said.
-With embalming all orifices are plugged. Wadding is inserted into every
orifice ("from nose to ass" as someone once said) to prevent leakage. Many find
this strange, some even sexualize it. I read an interview with an open necrophiliac
who commented that it was strange when embalmers did this. But to them it is
just part of the job; it is not sexual or strange.
The Embalming Process
1. Disinfect the mouth, eyes, nose, and other orifices. Powerful
disinfectant is used to clean the features, inside and out.

43

Inspect the deceased in regards to the type of fluid you will need.
Some embalmers will use this opportunity to mix all the fluid
they'll need for the procedure, to get it ready. Usually 16 ounces of

fluid with 2 gallons of water is a good dilution.

2. Shave the body. Typically the face is shaved at this point, as you
would shave yourself. Men are usually always shaved, though
women and children are also often shaved to remove any stray
hairs or "peach fuzz" from the face.
3. Break the rigor mortis by massaging the body. Massage the major
muscles groups to relieve the tension and move stiff joints to
loosen them up. If the muscles are tight, they will increase extra
vascular pressure, diverting embalming fluid away from where it
needs to go.

Setting the Features

1. Close the eyes. Use great care in setting the eyes. Typically, the
eyelids tend to sag back in its socket, so a small piece of cotton is
placed between the lid and the eye to round it out. In some cases, a

plastic eye cap is used for this purpose.

Eyelids are never sewn shut but may be glued shut in some cases.
The features need to be set before the embalming fluid is
introduced, because that fluid will "set" the body fairly rigidly,

making it difficult to do it afterward.

2. Close the mouth and set it naturally. One of two methods is
typically used to set the mouth.

44

Sometimes, the mouth is sewn shut using suture string, passing a

curved needle through the jaw under the gums and back up through
the septum. Avoid tying the string too tightly to give the jaw line a

natural appearance.
An injector gun is also commonly used in conjunction with a
mouth form. Like a mouth guard or a dental prosthetic, the mouth
form holds the jaw together according to the natural bite and
alignment of the jaw. This method often includes less room for

human error.
3. Moisturize the features. A small amount of crme should be used
on the eyelids and lips to keep them from drying out, giving them a
natural and lifelike appearance.
Embalming the Arteries
1. Choose your incision site. The arteries are embalmed by
simultaneously introducing embalming fluid which is the formalin
(a mixture of formaldehyde, other chemicals, and water) into an
artery while draining the blood from a nearby vein or from the

heart. It takes about two gallons of fluid to embalm a typical body.

On men, the incision is made near the base of the SCM muscle and
the clavicle. For females or younger people, the femoral site is

most popular.
2. Make your incision. Clean the vein point off, create an entrance
point, and insert the drain tube towards the heart. Tie a ligature
around the lower side of the tube.

45

Do the same for the artery except insert the cannula instead of a
drain tube. Place the cannula forceps on the artery locking the
cannula in place. Use the small locking forceps to clamp off the

upper side of the artery and restrict the flow.

3. Turn on your embalming machine and distribute the fluid. While
the embalming is taking place, wash the body with a good
germicidal/antibacterial soap and be sure to check for drainage
while massaging the limbs to push blood out and embalming

solution in.
When the fluid enters the arteries, pressure will build throughout
the veins, which means the fluid is moving throughout the body.
You'll notice the veins bulging somewhat. Open the jugular drain

tube periodically to allow blood to escape and relieve the pressure.

4. Slowly decrease the pressure. When you have about 20% of your
solution left, turn off the machine and reverse your cannula to the
other side of the artery you chose to inject. This will embalm the
part that was blocked by the cannula previously. Be sure to turn
down the pressure, as the fluid only has to go a short distance, and

you don't want to "pop the eyes."

In the case of the femoral, this will embalm the lower leg. In the
case of the right common carotid, this will embalm the right side of

the head.
5. Finish. When you've embalmed to your satisfaction, or run out of
fluid, turn off the machine, remove the cannula, and tie off the

46
veins and arteries you used. Suture the incisions closed. Use
sealing powder to ensure there is no leakage.
7. Next the embalmer will dress the body. In this case the family will
have an option about the clothes that will put on the deceased
whether they are the one who would provide or they will leave it to
the business care. The first thing to be done is to make sure that
the body has underwear. Bodies are covered to protect 'their'
dignity and respect.
-The clothes will be put on, one item at a time in the same way they
are taken off.
8. Once all the clothes are on the body and everything is done the
embalmer will look it over and assess the job. They make sure
everything is correct and as it should be. That all the clothes fits
and look respectable.
9. The body will be put in the coffin.
10. The embalmer will look over the body again; coffining a body
often disturbs and moves clothes. So the clothing is straightened,
things like ties and makeup are put on at this point.
Burial Arrangement
1. The helpers will setup the flowers and other accessories for the wake of
the deceased in the Nirvana Funeral Home Chapel, in their house or any
place where the immediate family have chosen.
Signing out the body (if the wake will setup outside the Nirvana
Funeral Home)
1. The coffin will be pull out of the mortuary.
2. Next is signing out the body to the logbook, it contains details such as
who signed out the body, the date that the body is being signed out, where

47
the body is going, what happened to the valuables and so on are all
recorded. It is a very important part of signing out the body as this is a
permanent record of everything.
3. The nose and mouth are plugged. Cotton wadding is stuffed down the
throat and up the nose to prevent leakage. Then the mouth is sutured
closed.
4. Once all the process are done. The thumbscrews are tightened and it is
closed tight.
1.

Processing of Death Certification

Get (3) blank certificate of death (COD) at the local civil registrar, and the
undertaker who arrange the burial will fill up the biographical information

of the deceased.
2. The undertaker will go to the hospital/doctor or medico legal officer for
them to sign the necessary information about the cause of death of the
deceased.
3. The undertaker will now proceed to the death registration section and
submit the COD.
4. Receive the file copy.
Loading the hearse and transporting
1. The coffin will be wiped over with a cloth. This will be done to remove
any dust and condensation.
2. The coffin will be brought at the back of the hearse. A special roller bar at
the back of the hearse that can be pulled out is where the coffin will be
lifted, and then slid into place. The hearse driver will align the coffin
and tightens it into place with a goose neck.
3. If the hearse is not leaving immediately then the back is left open to
prevent condensation building up again.

48
4. Transportation of the deceased up to the cemetery and be carried in to its
graveyard.

of the top agenda of Nirvana funeral home. The management assures the safety of its
nearby communities and being aware of how the services may affect public health,
safety and comfort.
Preparation Room Solid Waste

62
Anything that might have come in contact with un-embalmed remains or body
fluids is considered potentially contaminated. Disposable gowns, gloves, sheets,
clothing, sponges, paper towels and any other solid waste item are included in biohazardous solid waste. All bio-hazardous waste items of the Nirvana Funeral Homes
should be placed in an appropriately marked container or bag and secured before
disposition. Laundry items should be placed in a cloth bag tied at the top and the bag and
contents laundered. Instruments such as syringes, blades, needles, etc., are referred to as
sharps. These bio-hazardous items should be placed in a special container with a
sealed lid. When filled, the container and contents will be collected by the Solvtech
Consultancy Resources, a registered company that is responsible for the Nirvana Funeral
Home waste items.
Use of Formaldehyde
One of the most effective ways to control airborne concentrations of
formaldehyde is to control it at its source. There are a number of ways in which exposure
to formaldehyde vapors can be reduced or eliminated. This is done by the enclosure of
the vapor source such as placing covers on the embalming machines or by the use of a
ventilation system. Proper ventilation of a prep room is very important. In many cases,
general ventilation with exhaust fans is adequate. As the vapors are heavier than air, the
fans should be placed just above the floor. Other practices include minimizing splashes,
pouring chemicals from bottles slowly, keeping all lids tightly closed. Treating autopsy
viscera in covered pails, thoroughly rinsing the prep table and instruments used in the
procedure and leaving ventilation exhaust fans on for a while after the preparation has

63
been completed. Every preparation room is equipped with an eyewash station and shower
or portable eyewash drenching solution in case of an emergency.

Blood and body fluids Disposal

Embalming tables have a drain at the end. This drain leads to a container. The
blood and body fluids that are removed during embalming are washed flows down
through the drain, and there it is flushed into the septic sewer where it will be treated by
the waste water treatment plant.
In cases where the deceased was overcome by a contagious disease, these fluids
are treated first with disinfectant. There are cases where a person who has passed away
because of a communicable disease, funeral staffs required to dispose of the blood and
body fluids in specialized toxic waste disposal units that are collected by a company that
deal with this particular type of thing. There are certain privacy laws that restrict funeral
directors from knowing personal details about people, such as whether they passed away
because of AIDS, Hepatitis or other communicable diseases. Funeral directors are usually
only made aware by the family of the deceased. Sadly, in this day and age, we treat every
deceased person as though they died of a communicable and contagious disease. Some
funeral homes will only dispose of the blood and bodily fluids through this specialized
waste disposal company, but in the scheme of things, blood and body fluids are only a
very small part of what actually goes into the water waste treatment system.
