Magazine Analysis

The masthead is the largest font on the cover to emphasise that it is the
most important part of the cover. The masthead is the most important part
of the cover because its what the reader will see when they go through the
shops. It needs to be easily noticeable in the magazine shelves. Its white
and bold so its easily noticeable against the dark background of Florences
red hair. Underneath the masthead of NME is what it stands for though
this is made smaller because everyone knows the magazine as just NME.
Most people know what NME specializes in but those who dont will know
by looking at New Musical Express under the Masthead.

The main image shows the

featured artist and completely
takes up the entire background of
the cover. Her dark red hair allows
the text and her face to stand out
more and the use of a close-up
shot gives the cover a personal
feeling. Her expression is moody
and intimidating; indicating that
Florence has quite a strong
character and this interview will
possibly be about how shes made
it through to success. Her hair
stands out in this cover because it
is red and the only source of
strong colour on the cover. He pale
complexion and white top blend in
nicely with the white font so her
hair stands out more.
This quote tells us a little about
what this issue will be about and
along with the intimidating and
personal closed up image, makes
us feel as though this issue will
be personal towards Florence
and allows the reader to maybe
connect with her more.

This sell line shows the reader that this is a

special edition cover and compels the reader to
buy the cover. Its place neatly next to the
masthead and is in bold so the reader is likely
to notice this when looking at the cover. It
convinces the reader to buy the magazine
because of the word special edition cover
which tells the reader that this issue is going to
be special and not like their other issues.

This sell line contains a list

of all the artists featured in
this issue. The title of this sell
line is in bold and white to
match the colour scheme but
also to draw the readers
attention. The list
underneath it is in a smaller
font as to not draw any
attention away from the title.
This part is only really
important when the reader
has actually picked up the
cover to see who is featured.

The subtitle is the second largest font of the colour which shows it to be of
second most important. The word Florence shows which artist is going to
be featured in this issue. The black font is the opposite colour used for the
other examples of font on the cover and therefore makes it stand out. Its
large and takes up over half the width of the cover.
The colour scheme here is mainly red, white and black. This could relate to the look of determination of Florences face
as red is a colour often associated with anger, black falls under darkness, and white is usually a symbol of hope or
something good. This mixture of emotions relate to what this issue as about as it tells the story of how Florence came to
fame.

Magazine
Analysis
The main image features Florence wearing a black
mini-dress
with
rocker styled black heeled boots. This use of dark clothing contrasts
with the redness of her hair and makes it stand out more. She is sat
up on top of the American flag which links the image to the pun
theyve used based on the USA. Her posture is relaxed yet confident
and shows that she is quite a strong woman. Her stare is intense yet
interesting as it welcomes the reader onto the page anyway. Overall
her posture and clothing show a touch of elegance which matches
Florences style.
The subtitle is
in a normal
Ariel-styled font
and explains
what the article
is about.
Florences name
is blue to
emphasise its
importance and
remind the
reader of her
name and that
this article will
feature her. The
subtitle also
includes a
question which
compels the
reader to read
more to find out
the answer to
this question.

The drop capital is used to make this

long list of columns more interesting
and also shows the reader where the
article begins. Its in cursive to match
the heading and elegance of the image.

The title is a play on words of Florences hit single

Youve Got the Love and uses the words USA Got the
Love instead which tells us a little bit about what this
article is about. USA is in bold letters behind the main
image which reunites it with the flag used for the
photoshoot. This gives the article a very USA theme
style and the way Florence sits on the flag with the
words behind her hints that she has American
underneath her or is ruling over America. USA is in
bold but the cover is a dark grey close to the shade of
the background, this ensures that is can be used in
large bold letters but does not take away the attention
from the image. The rest of the title is in cursive which
matches the elegance of Florences image.

The article columned which makes it

look almost like a newspaper article
which maybe is used to target and older
audience as it looks more mature than
the style of most magazines. The
language used is very descriptive,
formal and detailed, indicating that this
is in fact aimed for an older audience.

The colour scheme is red, white, and

black like the cover of this magazine.
White is often associated with pride
and hope which means its important
that it takes up the majority of the
page behind Florence. The red is for
the American flag we now know and
the black is often associated with
darkness though here its being used
to make Florence stand out more.

Magazine Analysis

The index is put to the side to

keep it out of the way yet its
too important to leave out. Its
coloured red to suit the colour
scheme. Its listed off down the
side so it takes up space as a
contents page wants to fill up
the entire page and leave barely
any space left.

The headline is in bold and the largest font on the page

to show its importance. It also lets the reader know what
page theyre on. NME is in its logo form, which reminds
the reader what magazine theyre reading. The headline
is in a black banner, which makes it stand out more.

The main image is of the

Arctic Monkeys performing at
one of their contents and
shows the reader what this
article will be about. The
image takes up the majority
of the page to attract the most
attention.

The flatpan is where the

articles are listed and this is
important so the reader
knows where to look to see
what they want to see. The
articles are grouped into
sections and each section
header is in bold with a black
banner behind it so it stands
out more. The page numbers
are in red to match the red,
white, and black colour
scheme.

The colour scheme here is

red, white, and black. Theyve
used this because this issue is
more based around a rock
themed double page spread
because Arctic Monkeys is a
rock group. Red and black are
dark buttons which they use
for a rock theme because rock
music is often described as
being quite dark.

The article snippet is right

under the photograph and in
quite a large font, which
shows that its one of the
main attractions of the issue
and the page number is
where this double paged
spread is going to be. The
snippet of the article is
supposed to draw the reader
in and make them curious
enough to go and read this
article.

The advert here is being used to take up space as the page

wants to take up as much space as possible. The advert is
advertising NMEs subscription, which theyve put into this
page because its a page most readers will read to see
where the articles theyre interested in are.

Magazine Analysis

The masthead here is red

and is the largest font on the
page, which signals its
importance. Because the title
of the magazine is just one
letter, it doesnt exactly take
up the majority of the width
like most magazine covers do.
But it attracts the attention by
being place in a large red box
so its still noticeable
underneath everything else.

This strapline shows the reader that this is an exclusive

issue that has this list that the reader may feel intrigued
to read and see if their favourite songs are on there or if
they can find new songs. The colours are pink, yellow,
black, and white to suit the party styled theme that this
front cover has. Its made to look a little bit like a party
banner, which shows the double page spread of this issue
is going to have a happy styled topic.

These sell lines are place to the

side and out of the way as they
are important but cant take away
the attention from the key points
in the magazine. Theyre quite
colourful with red, black, pink,
and white with fonts of various
sizes to show how reckless and
messy this issue is supposed to
look. Like a party.

The colour scheme is made up

of yellow, pink, white, and black.
These are quite loud colours to
use for a magazine cover so
suggest a party theme.

The issue title is supposed to

look as though it was written on
by Lana herself and looks as
though she spray painted it on.
The colour is bright pink which
shows that this is a bit of a girly
article and the spray paint
signifies that this article shows off
Lanas reckless and daredevil
attitude.

The strapline is sitting right underneath the title so

theyre linked though it is coloured in black so it doesnt
take away so much attention. The term So whats so
bloody good? is supposed to link to the fact that Lana has
blood on her head in the image. The sarcastic strapline is
also maybe meant to suggest that this article is about
Lana being dissatisfied with something or shes moody.

The main image is right in the middle of the cover and

takes up the majority of the page. Its at medium close-up
so it shows what Lana is wearing and also her post. The
singer has quite a dazed and black expression and is
touching her head as though to adjust her crown or
maybe rub her head in a sleepy manor. The dress shes
wearing looks a little bit like a night gown so it maybe is
supposed to relate to Lanas drowsy way of singing. The
blood on her face suggest that she has fallen over and hit
it at one point which is maybe also supposed to link to
her style of singing. The crown links to the party-like
loudness of the cover.

Magazine Analysis
The main image is a facial close-up of Lana but includes her hand
and neck. The colours are blue, light blue, and red which give off a
kind of dreamy feel. The sparkly reflection dots give off this dreamy
theme and her expression also shows that she is passionate about
something or is trying to reach within herself. Her racial expression
has her eyes closed and lips partially open which gives off a
desperation feel. Her eye shadow is quite dark which blends it into
the background as though she is merging into the darkness. Her had
gesture makes us think she is kind of reaching into her soul or
remembering something painful. This matches Lanas soul-like
music and her drowsy tone in most of her songs.

The drop capital takes up the majority of the

page and is in a normal Cambria-styled font. This
means the drop capital makes the page more
interesting but doesnt take the attention away
from the main image or the text. The Drop capital
usually shows where the article begins but
because this takes up most of the page and doesnt
really signify where the article begins; its more
there for attractive purposes.
The article
layout is in an
average
columns
format which
signifies that
the article is
aimed towards
an older
audience as it
is in a
broadsheetstyle format
and doesnt try
to make the
article more
entertaining by
making the
article layout
more
interesting like
it would do for
a childrens
magazine.

The colour scheme is mainly purple,

dark blue, blue, red and black. This
makes the article look more dreamy
and dark which signifies Lanas music.

The drop capital here is smaller than

the first and in italics. This one
actually shows where the writing
begins and maybe signifies a new
topic or is just there so the page looks
less boring.

Magazine Analysis
The issue number is placed
underneath the header in a red circle.
The red goes well with the colour
scheme and the circle makes the page
look more attractive. It also shows the
issue number in a bigger way rather
than putting it to the side of the page
like most magazines do.

This subheading shows where the

flat pan is which is the list of articles
in the magazine. This makes the
magazine look interesting as well as
contributing to the pages colour
scheme and also makes it stand out.
The secondary images show a
little bit about what the other
articles will be about rather than
just showing the main article.
This catches the readers
attention if theyre not that
interested in Lana Del Rey. It
also helps fill up the page so
there isnt a lot of blank space.
The sell lines draw the reader
in and also tell them what is
going to be featured in this
magazine. This is important
because it draws in non-regular
readers who may be interested
in these certain bands.

The header is in bold in a colour that is a dark grey but not completely black. The
font is an Ariel-style. This shows the importance of the page though the header
doesnt take up the majority of the page like most headers so this would show that
this page has more content on it and the designer doesnt want to make it look too
crammed. The magazine logo and slogan are in red which suits the colour scheme.
The slogan is in a smaller font to the header as not to take attention away from the
header. The logo is right next to the header so the slogan can fit right underneath
without going over the edges of the header. This makes it look neater and more boxlike.

The page numbers vary

in size depending on how
large the image is and how
important the article is.
This will draw a reader in
to these certain articles
out of curiosity and the red
box the page number is in
doesnt just match the
colour scheme but also
makes the number stand
out more.

The colour scheme is red,

white and black which is
NMEs colours and also
expresses that it is
targeted towards an older
audience as these arent
bright colours.

Magazine Analysis
The masthead is white with lines through it to
represent shattered glass. The text is in bold and has
a black banner behind it which makes it stand out
more whereas the broken glass it supposed to maybe
represent the teen angst this magazine has for a
target audience. The masthead has the largest font
on the cover and also takes up the majority of the
width which shows that this is the most important
part of the cover.

The sell line at the top is in a yellow banner so it

stands out more. Yellow is also one of the colours in
the colour scheme and matches with the rest of the
cover. The word Green Day is highlighted in red to
signify its importance and also draw the reader in.
Those interested in Green Day will read that word
and want to read the rest of the article. The sell line
also tells us a little bit about what this issue will be
featuring.
The subheading is in the
colours red and yellow in a
comic book-style font. This
adds to the comic book-like
atmosphere of the album the
issue is talking about. The
cords My Chemical Romance
are in a different colour to
The Return of which shows
the importance of the name
of the band so even nonregular readers will want to
read this issue if they are a
fan of My Chemical Romance.
The red thunderbolt behind
the text shows how alive and
energetic this band and issue
is and also adds more
excitement to the cover that
teenagers will be interested
in.

The main image has quite a

high contrast in colour which
adds to the loudness of the
cover. The frontman of the
band, Gerard Way, stands at
the front and has an angry
look on his face. This also
adds to the teenage angst
atmosphere the magazine
aims for. His hair is red which
adds to the colour scheme of
the cover and his jacket is
red, white and blue which
gives the cover even more
colour and a loud look to it.

This banner will draw the

reader in because the target
audience is teenagers and
teenagers like to decorate the
walls of their bedrooms in
posters. The red background
makes the images of the
posters stand out more and
also shows the reader what
posters will be included in
the magazine because one of
Kerrang!s key content is the
free posters it includes.

This banner shows the reader a little bit about what this
magazine includes. Instead of also adding a little
description to tell a little more about the article, it just
shows the artist names which are enough to draw a
teenager in because they will want to read about their
favourite bands no matter what the article is about.

The colour scheme is red, black, and yellow. This show

how energetic and exciting this magazine cover wants to
look in order to bring the attention of teenagers. Red and
black are also dark colours that are often associated with
rock and metal music which is what Kerrang! mostly
features.

The logo of the band is right

next to the quote which
makes it look a little more
interesting and also adds to
the colour scheme. The lines
coming off from the logo and
underlining the quote also
make it look a little bit neater
and more professional. They
highlight the quote.

Magazine Analysis
The quote is red which
contrasts against the dark
background so it stands out.
Its supposed to show the
reader a little bit about what
this article is about and also
highlight this quote as being
special.

The main image shows the frontman of the band looking

down. His expression is sad though determined so maybe
expresses that the article is about the band having a hard
time before they came back from a break. Hes wearing a
denim jacket with a red, white, and blue t-shirt which is
supposed to be the American flag though here is also being
used to contribute to the colour scheme. The denim jacket
also relates to the rock-styled music he plays in his band.

The layout of
the double
paged spread
has all the text in
columns which
shows its for an
older audience
though his
broken up by the
large image and
highlighted
words in the
start of
paragraphs
which shows
that its for a
teen audience
because they
dont want to
read an article if
it looks boring
and too much to
read.
The drop capital and highlight text shows where
each paragraph starts and is also coloured red so it
contributes to the colour scheme. This is important
because its a teenage audience so the writing needs to
be broken down a bit so it doesnt look like too much.

The colour scheme here is red, blue, white,

and black which are the American colours
but are also quite dark which relates to the
rock-styled music the magazine features.

Magazine Analysis

The header is dark yellow and in a

grungy style as it looks as though dirt has
been thrown onto it. This relates back to
the rock-style Kerrang! often writes about.
The issue number and cover date is right
underneath it so it looks neat and
professional.

The main image is in black and white and

shows two band members of Alter Bridge at a
concert. This shows the reader what the double
paged spread of this issue is about and also
adds to the dark colour scheme.

The subheading is in
the same style as the
header with Kerrang! in
its tradition white bold
font with the broken
glass texture on it but
the words this week
are in a different colour
which signifies its
importance.

The letter from the

editor tells the reader a
little about this issue and
also fills up blank space
on the page. Most
readers dont tend to
read this part which is
why its so small and out
of the way. Though those
who actually do read it
will find out a little more
about the people who
write the magazine.

The advertisement takes

up cover space and also
advertises the magazines
own subscription which will
interest the regular readers
who reader Kerrang! every
week.

The flatplan takes up

most of the page which
shows this issue has a
lot of content. The page
numbers are in red so
they stand out whereas
the sell lines are in bold
and are black. These are
supposed to draw the
reader in to the articles
and the page numbers
shows them what page
this article is on. The
articles are grouped into
sections and each
section is in the same
yellow grunge styled
writing as the header.
This makes them stand
out and the black box
they are placed in makes
the lists look neater.
