PLANNING HALLOWEEN

2015-2016
Instead of just trick-or-treating for candy, we are all going to promote
global citizenship at school by trick-or-treating for children who are in
need.
IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW OLD WE ARE,
WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
We are going to create a special UNICEF trick-or-treat boxes to
collect donations for children who need help (UNICEF).
BOXES will be set in some offices of the Institute and they will be
also used on 30th October 2015 to increase the donations.
1SR
Students will prepare posters for 30th October 2015 with some pictures
explaining this campaign.
2SR
Students will prepare some posters that will accompany/go with the boxes
explaining this campaign.

1SR AND 2SR WILL WORK ON THE FOLLOWING TEXT:

I.- HOW CAN WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

Not all children have the luxury of looking forward to collecting candy. Some children
worry about having clean water, food, medicine and an education.
By Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF, WE can make a huge contribution:
One dollar will give a child 40 days of clean, safe water.
Five dollars will feed a malnourished (ill from mal nutrition) child for five days.
Ten dollars will provide 280 children with vaccinations. Any amount of money will
make a difference.

We all are citizens. What does citizen mean? A citizen is a member of a community,
country or group. We are citizens at local, national and global levels.
All citizens have rights and responsibilities.
What rights do we have as citizens?
Examples:
Education
Health care
Free speech
Respect
However, some individuals' rights are not met. They do not have access to clean water,
food, medicine or education. How does this affect you or me?

Does it relate to me personally, to my community (local - family/school), or is it

a national or global issue?
#1 READ THE FOLLOWING SCENARIOS AND WRITE WHERE EACH ONE
WOULD FALL WITHIN THE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES
1. Bullying on the playground.
2. No access to clean water.
3. Homelessness.
4. Wearing "hand-me-down" clothing and shoes.
5. Sick with no access to medicine.
6. Malnutrition.
7. No access to education.

Some of the situations that are mentioned before can fall into more than one category.
Why? Because some things may affect us at a local, national and global level too. We
belong to each of these levels. Good citizens are responsible.
What are the responsibilities of good citizens?

II.- LESSONS IN CIVILITY

#2 READ CAREFULLY THE TEXT BELLOW. WHAT PERSONAL

QUALITIES ARE BEING HIGHLIGHTED BY THE AUTHOR IN HER
INSTRUCTIONS?
Trick-or-treating is a highlight of my kids year! And truly, whats not to love? Dressing
up, pretend play, free candyits a kids dream.
It can be a good night for us parents too. In addition to the candy we get to sneak when
the kids arent looking (Im just saving my children from too much sugar, ahem) and the
photo ops (how cute are your kids?!), its a great way to naturally work in some lessons
in civility.
Encourage kids to show their neighbours how much they appreciate the freebies by
returning their kindness and showing them what awesome neighbours they can be. Here
are 7 dos of trick-or-treating to go over before heading out:
1. Do only go to houses with lights on. Not every family participates in Halloween. We
should respect that different families do different things.. ___________________
2. Do stay on paths. Avoid trampling Mrs Fosters flowers. Shes worked so hard on
them. ________________________
3. Do say trick or treat in a clear, friendly tone. _________________________
4. Do avoid crowding (pushing) the person handing out (giving) the candy. _________

5. Do take only one candy unless youre offered more. There are a lot of kids out
tonight. Lets leave enough candy for everyone. ______________________
6. Do say thank you even if you dont like the candy offered. _______________
7. Do ask before you eat. __________________
