QUESTION: Refer to Bukit Batok Presbytarian Girls School 2013 Prelim 1

Introduction:
A very good morning to all gathered here today. I am here to share with you my suggestions regarding the use
of the funds allocated to our school by the Ministry of Education. Our principal, Mrs. Han, has proposed three
ways to best utilise the funds. She has suggested the installation of a syntactic turf, a lift or air-conditioning in
the school canteen. After careful consideration of these options, I will now share with you my views and also
propose a separate option for your consideration.
Body Paragraph 1:
Propose installation of syntactic turf for school field
What is syntactic turf?
- Has the exact feel and look of real grass
- Becoming popular with many sports venues and schools
- Heavy duty; able to handle scorching Singapore heat and heavy rain
Initial problems of present field
- Heavy rain usually results in muddy pools of water
- Dirty and slippery when using; can result in accidents and injury
- Dangerous and unhygienic
- Long periods of time when field cannot be used
Benefits of syntactic turf
- water will drain off and dry up quickly
- no mud to stain shoes and clothings
- syntactic grass will not be damaged by the hot sun
- Inexpensive to upkeep so will help save costs

Body Paragraph 2:
Propose installation of a school lift
What and where?
- to be situated at the science blocks as it is four storeys high
- small scale lift; accommodates 5 persons
Benefits of lift
- science block is central so easily accessible
- a great facility to help transport heavy equipment and objects
- will be much appreciated by injured students; instead of moving classrooms, they can just utilise the
lift
- also cater to the physically disadvantaged students and staff members of the school
Some ground rules
- lift should be used responsibly and care taken to maintain it
- installation of cameras in the lift to detect abuse or vandalism or
- rules should be set to give priority to people who need it rather than a first come first serve basis
Body Paragraph 3:
Propose the building of an al fresco cafe
What and where?

- an outdoor caf serving gourmet coffee , sandwiches and cakes

- at the school lobby, outside the general staffroom
- artistic dcor by students
- manned by students, alumni, parents
Benefits of al fresco caf
- presents ascience block is central so easily accessible
- provides a chill out and relax corner for students and staff alike
- great opportunity for experiential learning where students actually engage in entrepreneur
endeavours
- an avenue to generate funds
- perfect platform to build bond between school and stakeholders
- promote ownership of school facilities/ cultivate independence, pride in hard work
How?
- A committee set up consisting of teachers, alumni and parents
- To source for alumni and parent sponsors and trainers
- Students and teacher/alumni/ parent supervisor to be scheduled into shifts to man cafe
- To start with the Secondary 3 cohort and eventually to involve all levels of students
Conclusion:
Thank you for your kind attention towards my sharing of the various ways we could best use the funds
allocated to us by the Ministry of Education. It is my wish that you would consider the usage of these funds to
install either a lift at the science blocks, syntactic turf on our field or alternatively, set up an outdoor caf at
the school lobby. Have a good day everyone.
