CHAPTER 2 OUTLINE

FOREIGN

TONGJI UNIVERSITY EXPERIMENTAL (consider)

- Project consists of teaching buildings, and admin building, a canteen, a gym and elevated passages
-Space are connected in series through courtyards of different scales and different kinds of enclosures according
to functional demands
- Concept of “slope” to “steps” with grassy “tread” and concrete “riser” = Landscape is used as infrastructure
- Setback of architectural volumes, flowing of artificial topography, as well as undulating heights, such Nature-
inspire twists unfold an urban panorama dotted with children playing at playground, stepped turf, terraces and
south-facing corridors after class
-Multiple spacial sequences and themed courtyards
-The program of school accommodates a wide spectrum of dynamics, thus the focus of design is to explore
variations and possibilities in spacial relations
-design considered the psychosomatics of teachers and students to help decide the scequences of openness and
encclosure, suppression and release
-To achieve a sense of depth and cheerfulness
-Establishing multiple sequences of spaces helps to encourage children to explore in different surroundings
-Double circulation leves = important space for after-class activities
-courtyard = bringing sky light in
-Air vents of those special classrooms are covered with children’s stools

spaces
-Teaching Building = long and bended shape

PEKING UNIVERSITY (considered)(included)

-its spatial design becomes an educational instrument, foreseeing the latent needs of the future school based on
the schools’ spirit of interaction, inspiration and individualization
-to a vision that will require--more than knowledge, skills that champion diversity, collaboration, innovation and
accountability
-collectivism = communal system of the “danwei” = you are not a complete person without your family, compiled
with the social and economic implication
-Systemising classrooms, developing the programme, as well as removing walls, adding windows and
reconfiguring space were all view of two key ddrivers: communication and blurring of subject boundaries
-classrooms are reconceived to focus on the student not the teacher, to work across multiple subjects and
activities
-moving through the school it continues to engage with views across learning spaces
-inserting new paths and enhancing journeys
