Knitted Together

December 2015

"...speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up into Him in every way who is the head, into Christ, from
whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when each part is
working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in love." Ephesians 4:15-16 RSV
"For Thou didst form my inward parts, Thou didst knit me together in my mother's womb."
Psalm 139:13 RSV

The Pastors Heart:

Charlie Burks and I had some )me together as we waited on the Hea)ng & Air repairman to tell us what with wrong with the
heat supply to the Fellowship Hall. We talked about how the Lord has blessed our congrega)on. Shortly a5er I arrived here
in 2014 Charlie was projec)ng that the funds to pay my salary would run out. But It seems the projec)on keeps moving
ahead and now it is April or May 2016. We were blessed to do something very good with our Benet for Tillery on October
18. We were blessed to have Dennis gi5 that was used to upgrade all the railings to the entrance doors of our church and
a wonderful new ramp installed at the front door. We have been blessed to have a congrega)on willing to undergo the
New Beginnings process with high par)cipa)on. We were blessed to have playground equipment repaired and updated with
Jan & Garys gi5. The parking lot was sealed and looks so much be>er. Now the Session has received news from the Earl
Lee Frazier Estate that our church will receive a sizable benet from Mr. Fraziers will over the future months and perhaps
years. We are blessed again!
It seems like the gi5s of Christmas came this Fall to us and we are very thankful. At the Session Mee)ng on November 9
Gary li5ed up our gra)tude as he led us all in prayer for this surprising and grace-lled gi5. Sunday, November 8, I read from
2 Chronicles 16 that the eyes of the Lord go to and fro throughout the earth seeking to strengthen those whose heart is
fully commi>ed to Him. Surely, the Lord has witnessed our willingness to commit ourselves to His purposes and He has
strengthened us nancially. We are very blessed.
But I was telling Charlie and he agreed that we cannot use this gi5 as a reason to become complacent. It cannot be allowed
to be a wet blanket over the ames of the Holy Spirit in our hearts. It is )me to rekindle our faith and open ourselves in
prayer to the vision of a new and daring new mission for our church. This Mission will not come without our asking for it in
prayer and seeking it by ac)vely researching our community to nd out where we can do the most good for others.
Our search for our mission cannot be rushed or accomplished supercially. It is not like geEng a at )re, stopping, changing
the )re, and geEng right back on the same road heading in the same direc)on. It is more like stopping at a crossroads and
prayerfully deciding which fork perhaps of more than two that we should take knowing full well that that course will lead us
all to a place we have never been before, a place of greater servanthood for Gods glory in Christ Jesus.
Mark

Notes From the Session:

At the November Session Mee)ng, Be>ye Skillern read a le>er from the lawyer for the estate of Earl Lee Frasier in which
First Presbyterian Church Soddy Daisy is name as a beneciary. This will result in mul)ple payments over several years with
total proceeds possibly as much as $500,000. It may be several months or a year or more before the payment. The Church
Cemetery was also named in the will and receive payments. Mr. Fraiser was a long )me member of the church and we are
grateful he so wonderfully remembered First Presbyterian in his will. Praise the Lord!
The Session con)nued work on upcoming events for the Christmas season and early next year. Special programs for
Christmas include the adult Christmas dinner on Friday December 4 at 7:00pm, and on December 20 the choir Cantata at the
11:00 worship service and the Childrens program at 6:00 pm that evening with cookies and light refreshments. The Christmas Eve candlelight service will be at 7:00 pm. In January we are arranging a concert by Jody Norris of Daisy United Methodist Church (UMC) on a Wednesday night and a pulpit exchange with Rev. Joe Phillips of Daisy UMC on January 31. For the
pulpit exchange, Rev. Mark will preach at Daisy UMC and Rev. Phillips will preach at First Presbyterian. The Session is also
pursuing a Revival service with other Presbyterian churches next year, possibly during Lent between Ash Wednesday on February 10 and Easter on March 27.
For our outreach ministry Christmas gi5ing project, Ee Heiss has received from the Soddy Daisy Resident Center the
names of 15 people who have no family in the area. Some wants have been iden)ed from each of the people on the list,
but other items can be added such as homemade cookies. Please see Ee to help in this project. Joy Gi5 envelopes will be
available for the Sunday morning and evening services on December 20. The Welcome Wagon le>ers are not geEng the
response we had hoped for so we are looking at other ways to use the mailing list.
For the building and grounds we have an es)mate for some repairs and renova)ons in the church which will be used to
start developing a priority list for repairs and renova)ons that will be used when addi)onal funds become available. One
major repair is replacing the Sanctuary hea)ng unit which is going bad. Thanks to the Presbyterian Women for authorizing
transfer from their savings account the $2000 needed for this.
Two new elders are needed star)ng in January to replace o-going elders Danny Curvin and Gary Newman. If you are interested in serving or know someone who would be a good candidate, please contact someone on the elder nomina)ng commi>ee. A called mee)ng of the congrega)on will be held in January to elect the new elders.
Jim Hargrove, Clerk of the Session

SHARE THE CHRISTMAS LOVE!

The Session approved our Mission to provide gi5s for 15 residents at the Soddy Daisy Health Care Center. Each resident has
iden)ed one WISH. These residents have no family in the area or the family is nancially unable to provide gi5s.
If you would be willing to share your love during this Season, please take a name. Our residents have no dietary restric)ons.
The only item to avoid is NO POWDERbaby powder, bath powder, talc, etc. Powder on the oor becomes very slippery
and a danger for all. If you choose to provide socks, please only include socks with rubber grips on the feet.
In addi)on to their WISH item, other items for sugges)on: puzzle books (crosswords, seek-a-word, etc.),
inspira)onal books, jigsaw puzzles, lo)on, hand cream, lip balm, pocket calendar, ball point pens...whatever you like.
