Christmas 2015

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A Blessed Christmas to you all.
My greeting comes at a time marked by sad and
troubling news for our city, our nation and our world.
The joyful news of Christmas competes in these days
with stories of street violence in our city, of wars,
conflicts and acts of terrorism throughout the world
including in our own nation.
As people of faith, we must read these signs of the
times. As we do, so Christmas gives us a proper
perspective: the sadness of violence and war does not
have the last word. God has come to save us, for we
cannot save ourselves. The savior born to us raises us up
from darkness and brings us into his own wonderful
light.
One of the Christmas readings taken from Pauls
letter to Titus says this:
When the kindness and generous love
of God our savior appeared,
not because of any righteous deeds we had done
but because of his mercy,
he saved us Titus 3:4-5
We hear those words because of his mercy,
especially as we celebrate the Jubilee of Mercy this year.
The challenge for us is not just to believe that God is
merciful, but also to believe that God is merciful to us
and that God is blessing us with his mercy precisely at
this very moment, and in the limited circumstances of
our lives and relationships. When we accept that mercy,
we will be transformed and become the merciful light of
God in a dark and cold world. Then, our works of mercy
will, in turn, bring hope, healing, and renewal, just as
Gods mercy has done for us.
May God bless you and your families with his mercy
and enable you to be the hands of his mercy in our
world.
Sincerely yours in Christ,

nuestra nacin y nuestro mundo.
salvarnos, pues no podemos salvarnos a nosotros
mismos.
y su amor a los hombres;
mundo oscuro y fro.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Many of our most treasured traditions link the
liturgy of the church with the hearth of the home. The
food on the table at certain feasts and fasts helps to
extend the mystery into everyday life. Tonight, for
example, many families of Italian heritage, especially
those with links to the south of Italy, will settle down
to the Feast of the Seven Fishes, or La Vigilia. It is a
command performance for the whole family, as the
saying goes: Natale con I tuui, Pasqua conchi vuoi, or
Christmas with your family, Easter with whomever
you wish. Seven different fish, some say one for each
day of Mary and Josephs journey to Bethlehem,
others say one for each sacrament, or one for each day
of creation, are served. Eel and shrimp, lobster and
crab, calamari, pasta with clam sauce, flounder and
hake all abound, but most especially baccala, dried
salted cod. Why? Many say that it is a way to pay
homage to the beasts of the stable who witnessed the
holy birth and relinquished their manger to make way
for God. Tonight, if someone asks you to pass the
shrimp, youll be able to shed a little light on a menu
that is a delicious treasure in our tradition!

Day de Latinoamrica.

DISCOVER HOW GOD

IS CALLING YOU
Cardinal George created The Quigley Scholars Program in 2007 to support young men in the Archdiocese
of Chicago who want to learn more about the priesthood.
The program is open to teens in both public and
Catholic high schools (at any level) as well as those who
are homeschooled.
The Scholars attend a formational meeting once a
month at Mundelein Seminary from September through
April. We pray together, attend Mass, have dinner and
attend a faith sharing session with the seminarians.
Scholars who attend Catholic high schools in the
Archdiocese may also apply for a $2,500 scholarship to
help offset the cost of high school tuition.

St. Joseph School Celebrates Christmas Escuela San Jos Celebra las Navidades
Our month of December centered around
preparing for Christmas. Different classes
participated in Mass preparation all through the
month. The sixth grade students prepared a prayer
service and shrines to celebrate the feast of Our Lady
of Guadalupe. Students throughout the school
prepared songs and narration for Las Posadas. As
each day passed, the wonder and awe continued to
grow throughout the building. Christmas art is spread
all through the school.
Students and families came together by
generously giving to local families in need.
Classrooms collected items for food baskets. Thirteen
children will have a brighter Christmas due to
Operation Christmas Gift. NJHS organized gathering
hats, gloves, and mittens too.

Holiday Ideas
Its not too late to plan for the extra time you have
with your family during Christmas break. Be
creative! Try something new this year. Once you get
started, you will find that you will run out of time for
all the fun activities.
Find Christmas books and have a family reading
night.
Make a batch of homemade peppermint scented
playdough.
Start your own family holiday book with
memories and pictures.
Create colorful cards for people in the hospital or
nursing home.
Create new ornaments by recycling old puzzle
pieces with a little paint and glitter.
Bake cookies and share them with a neighbor,
local fire department, or librarians.
Break out all your board games, gather some
snack foods, and enjoy unplugged fun.
Gather a small group to carol and try going house
to house or sing carols over the phone.
There are so many opportunities to have family
fun this season.
What will your family try?
