b) A large semi infinite wall of 2 cm thick has uniform temperature of 30 oC
initially and the wall temperature is suddenly raised and maintained at 400 oC.
Find (i) the temperature at a depth of 0.8 cm from the surface of the wall after 10
seconds (ii) Instantaneous heat flow rate through that surface per m2 per hour.
Take = 0.008 m2/hr and k = 6 W/m oC
12. a) Using the basic principles of heat transfer and thermodynamics derive the
expression for the LMTD of a parallel flow and a counter flow.
(Or)
b) A vertical plate of 0.7 m wide and 1.2 m height is maintained at 90o C in a
room at 30 oC. Calculate the free convective heat loss.
13. a) Sketch the pool boiling curve neatly specifying the different regions of it and
explain the phenomenon happening in each of the region.

b) The inner sphere of liquid oxygen container is 40 cm diameter and outer sphere
is 50 cm diameter. Both have emissivities 0.05. Determine the rate at which the
liquid oxygen would evaporate at -183 oC when the outer sphere is at 20 oC.
Latent heat of oxygen is 210 kJ/kg.
14. a) In a double pipe heat exchanger, hot fluid with a specific heat of 2300 J/kg
enters at 380 oC and leaves at 300 oC. Cold fluid enters at 25oC and leaves at
210oC. Calculate the heat exchanger area required for
i)
Counter flow
ii)
Parallel flow.
Take overall heat transfer coefficient as 750 W/m2 K and mass flow rate of hot
fluid is 1 kg/s

b) In a refrigerating plant, water is to be cooled from 20 oC to 7 oC by brine
solution entering at 2 oC and leaving at 3 oC. The design heat load is 5500 W and
the overall heat transfer coefficient is 800 W/m2K. What area is required when
using a shell and tube heat exchanger with the water making one shell pass and
the brine making two tube passes.
