DRYING COLUMN KIT

Setup and Operating Instructions

This instruction sheet primarily covers the set up and use of
the parts supplied in the Small drying column and Large drying column kits for use with the Pylon AB6 monitor and active
cell detectors. Due to the wide variety of applications and
scenarios, not all measurement situations can be covered by
this instruction sheet. The purpose of this instruction sheet is
to provide general information on the use of these kits during
the radon measurement process. The User should take the
concepts provided herein and make the appropriate changes
to apply the concepts to their particular application.

COMPONENTS

Cell Mating Connectors

This instruction manual does not provide details of any Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) products included in the kit. For
the COTS products, refer to the instructions provided by the
manufacturer and included with the kit for information on the
product specifications, limitations, warnings, etc.

SETUP
Figure 1 provides a diagram showing the setup of just the
drying column with an active cell.

SMALL DRYING COLUMN KIT

The small drying column kit is used to remove moisture from
the gas sample before it reaches the active cell. Condensing
moisture could damage the cell which would affect future
measurements.

Figure 2 provides a diagram showing a setup of all components that could be used in a measurement system with an
active cell.
Cut tubing to the desired lengths and install the cell mating
connectors as required.

LARGE DRYING COLUMN KIT

The large drying column kit may be used to remove moisture
from the gas sample before it reaches the active cell. Condensing moisture could damage the cell which would affect
future measurements. The large drying column allows for
longer operation without changing the drierite.

MAINTENANCE
Replace the drierite when it becomes saturated with moisture.
The provided Drierite changes color as it absorbs moisture.
NOTE
Drierite may be regenerated and reused. Spread the saturated drierite granules in layers one granule deep. Heat for 1
hour at 210 C or 425 F. The regenerated material should be
placed in the the original glass or metal container and sealed
while hot.
CAUTION
The temperature at which DRIERITE desiccants are regenerated is crucial in restoring DRIERITE to its original condition.
Absorbed moisture is water of hydration and is chemically
bound to the calcium sulfate of DRIERITE. Temperatures in
the range of 400 - 450 F are required to break these bonds
and release absorbed moisture. Lower temperatures, regardless of heating time, will not regenerate DRIERITE unless
applied under vacuum (28" Hg, 325 F or 26" Hg, 275 F).
Care should be taken not to overheat DRIERITE Desiccants.
High temperatures can alter the crystal structure and render
the desiccants permanently inactive.
