About Lansdowne
Located in the Garhwal district of the state of Uttaranchal, Lansdowne is a small picturesque hill
station. It is at a height of 1706 m above sea level and is preferred for its comfortable weather
throughout the year. In fact, due to its weather and scenic beauty, Lansdowne was a popular hill
resort for the British, and they built a cantonment here which is still preserved and maintained
well.
Lansdowne is named after its founder Lord Lansdowne, the Viceroy of India during 1888-1894.
It was the main base of independent movement activities during the Indian pre-independence
time. Currently, the command office of the legendary Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army is in
Lansdowne. The Garhwal Rifles Regimental War Memorial and the Regimental Museum are
places of significance in Lansdowne.
Lansdowne is known for its natural beauty and its tranquil environment. Though well connected
by motorable roads and located quite near to many busy cities, the place is unique because of
the sense of seclusion and peace it offers.
The lush greenery of the thick oak and blue pine forest that surrounds Lansdowne adds to its
beauty and charm, making it ideal for trekking and nature walks. Trekking to Tip-in-Top or
Hawagarh, bird watching, boating and paddling in the Bhulla Tal, etc are the main activities that
visitors can indulge in on a trip to Lansdowne.
Like most other hill stations, the climate here is the biggest attraction, especially during the hot
summers when people from the plains come here to escape the summer heat. Winters in
Lansdowne are severe with temperatures falling below 0 Celsius during the peak of winter.
Snowfall is common during the winter season and the quaint town is covered with a blanket of
white snow. For those who want to see snowfall and experience the winter chill, Lansdowne is
an ideal place to visit during this time.
For a comfortable stay, the best time to visit Lansdowne is between the summer months of
March to October when the weather is cool and pleasant for visitors to trek around and explore
the place. During autumn, the annual festival of Shardotsav is celebrated in a grand way
bringing in tourists from all over.
The hill station of Lansdowne can be reached by air, rail and roadways. The nearest airport is
Jolly Grant Airport (100 km), in Dehradun, which has connections to Delhi Airport, the nearest
international airport. The nearest railhead is at Kotdwar, at a distance of approximately 40 km.
Lansdowne is also well connected to nearby regions like Kotdwar, Haridwar, Dehradun,
Mussoorie and Delhi, among other places, by bus.

Scenic Lansdowne
"This place is magical and charming. The quiteness and the greenery all around reflects a
unique beauty. Less footsteps from the plains has still kept this place pollution free. Admiring
some scenic beauty of the great Himalayan range from this distance is also a wonderful
experience. In all I would like to visit this place again in near future as it feels somthing is still
incomplete.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Attraction: Bhulla Tal(Lake), Tiffin Top (Tip-in-Top), Church,
The HQ of the Gharwal Regiment-Museum is worth a visit. They also have a show for about 30
mins. on the regiment. Not to forget the Bhim Pakoda. Stop anywhere to click your camera as
much as you can. One visiting this place should keep a full day for Tarkeshwar Temple which is
about 50Km. from Lansdowne. No such great restaunts avalable here. Food is good. Shopping
just buy some local products which may facinate you.
Activities & things to do: There are some particular areas where you can do small treaking, but
sure take some one who knows the place vey well.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Starting from Delhi->Ghaziabad->Modinagar>enter Merrut city go towards Begumpul take a right turn->carry on till Meerabagh take another
right->carry on keeping an eye on Kubhmela Exp. Way on your left, you need not enter Bijnor>Kotdwar-> Duggada->Lansdowne.
Try to carry plenty of water, snacks. Try to complete your breakfast within the Bijnoe stretch. The
hilly stretch starts only after Kotdwar." - Suranjan Dutta, Delhi, Jun 24, 2011

The clouded land

"Lansdowne is a lovely hamlet, one almost untouched by the hustle of a busy tourist. The place
allows you an indulgent time where you can enjoy gentle walks along a beautiful valley. A valley
which is often covered in clouds and a lovely shade of green. This seemed to be the theme of
the whole weekend clouds in the valley, which would soon rise up and start traveling to the
hamlet, and find their way into our rooms. The entire view would be covered in haze, and then it
would rain, to clear the view to a cloud-covered valley.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: There are few things to do in Lansdowne, other than put up
your feet and enjoy the beautiful view of the valley, or take a nice walk. There is the famous
church, or the highest point which you can walk up to, and the destination will be as pleasant as
the walk itself.
Being the base for Garhwal Rifles, there is an army canteen (Alaknanda), from where you can
do some shopping, especially I think for shoes. Or you could buy the lovely cream-rolls from a
small bakery at the end of the road.
Page 3/15

Activities & things to do: Walk, read, and be at peace.

Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: To reach Lansdowne, the best way is to take the
road from Delhi. The nearest rail-station is Kotdwar, which is almost 2.5-3 hrs away.
During the monsoons, there is good chance of Landslides, and hence advisable to travel in a
more powerful car which can resist the strong flows of gushing water which sometime find their
way to the road." - Madhuri Agrawal, Mumbai, Oct 10, 2010

Lansdowne - Silent beauty of Valley!

"Lansdowne is located in Pauri Garhwal district of Uttaranchal.
Approximately 230 kms from Delhi. Route by road is Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut-Bijnor-MawanaKotdwar-Dugadda-Lansdowne.
If you start early morning around 4 am then you can reach this place around 9 am - its a five
hours drive.
Lansdowne is a hill station without much commercialisation yet.
We were there on 3rd and 4th July 2009 and the temperature at night was cold and day time it
was pleasant. It was a bit raining on July 4th and we could witness fog on next day early
morning before proceeded to Delhi.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: Accommmodation / Food
We stayed in GMVN Guest House at Tip N Top. GMVN also has a bigger guest house in
Lansdowne.
We stayed one night at Tree House and one night at normal room. Tree House room was little
smaller but with all modern facilities. The view from Tree House is beautiful.
Tip N Top has its own restaurant called Holiday Cafe. You will get fresh food on order. It is kind
of home made food.
There are some other resorts and two restaurants at market place too if you want to try different
food every day.
Sight-Seeing
a) Tip N Top
It is nature's beauty to see the valley and the other mountain ranges from Tip and Top. It is
really never boring one sitting and watching the nature's beauty.
b) Santosh Mata Mandir
Page 4/15

Santosh Mata Mandir is also located nearby. It is not a bad idea to walk on the best maintained
stretches to reach Santoshi Mata on one evening for Aarti.
c) Bhulla Lake
It is a small lake with ducks roaming around. You can do boating at Rs.15/- per head for 15
minutes. There is a children park near Bhulla Lake with swings and a rabbit house.
Lots of treks available for trekkers to explore. Trekking at Lansdowne is easier than other hill
stations since the stretches are not that steep. Also there is a small nursery run by Garhwal
regiment - you may buy plants from here.
d) Army Museum
Garhwal Regiment runs a museum which displays its history, milestones, achievements and
awards. Rs.20/- per head is entry fees and children below 14 years are not allowed.
e) St. Mary's Church
This church is constructed in 1896 - 110 years old.
f) St. John's Church
This catholic church is built in 1931.
g) Tarkeshwar Mandir
Tarkeshwar Mandir is 40 kms away from Lansdowne. It is in the midst of pine trees all around.
There is also a Dharmshala and Ashram. Tarkeshwar temple is 600 years old and 'Gaon
Devda' for 94 villages in Garhwal region. The scenic beauty of this place is simply awesome.
Peaceful place for meditation - there is a meditation hall inside the Dharmshala. Melas are held
twice in year during May and October.
Shopping
There is a small market place in Lansdowne where you can buy medicines, film rolls, batteries,
cosmetics, liquor, etc.
Activities & things to do: Lansdowne is nice place to relaxation. You can do trekking, bird
watching, boating and sight seeing.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Please refill fuel at Kotdwar before climbing to
Lansdowne. There is no petrol pump at Lansdowne.
here is no restaurants are market around Tarakeshwar temple. Hence, plan it as such you were
back to Lansdowne to have your food. Or, carry packed food with you.
You may get fresh seasonal fruits enroute. In July, we got fresh mangoes Rs.15 per kg. near
Najibabad on the highway roadside.
In Bijnor Kwality restaurant on the highway is good to have food with family" - Giri R, Delhi, Jul

The Sound of Silence

Page 5/15

"What is this life if full of care

We have no time to stand and stare?
Avid travellers of this wonderland, we take periodic breaks to almost anywhere and everywhere,
it is like have car will travel! This time around we decided to visit Landsdowne in Uttarakhand
and wondered how we had missed this picturesque hill station all these many years. The sound
of silence is so soothing to the nerves of those trying to escape the hustle bustle of everyday
living in the metropolis that one returns rejuvenated. There is an eerie silence that fills the air
broken only by the twittering of the fauna or the rustling of the flora as you drive up the
meandering foothills.
A six hour journey by road and you are in country so verdant and enchanting that at once you
can feel peace pervading the air amidst its green hills. Uttarakhand Hills, ensconced amid the
worlds highest and most beautiful mountain ranges, the Himalayas, are gifted with
extraordinary beauty and most of it unspoilt by the outside world. This is Lansdowne, earlier
known as Kalundanda, at a height of 5800 ft..on the central ridge densely forested with thick
deodar, silver oak, blue pine and rhodendrons and teeming with wild life. Leopards are known
to be regular visitors!
Picturesque and quiet, the hill-station of Lansdowne owes its existence to the British who
established a Garhwal Rifles cantonment here during the Raj era. They named this hill-station
cantonment in honour of the Earl of Lansdowne, Sir Petty-Fitzmaurice, the Viceroy of India
(1888-1894). Lansdowne is a well developed hill-station thanks to the Cantonment, yet it is
charmingly unspoiled and tranquil, a great holiday and honeymoon destination. Lansdowne is
memorable both for the natural beauty and the serenity of this hill station. The sunrise is
stunning.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: The market is not worth a visit except for food. There is
nothing to shop for unless you are interested in horticulture or need pine saplings or Christmas
trees.
Excursions
Kotdwar (45 km.)
A gateway to the hills and one of the last rail terminus for Garhwal.
The nearby places of interest include ancient Karnva-Ashram (14 km.) (where Shankuntala
gave birth to prince Bharat after whose name the country is called Bharat Varsh), Sidhbali
Temple (3 km.), Charaik Hills (20 km.).
Jwalpadevi (52 km.)
One of the known religious areas of the entire division on the main Pauri- Kotdwar road. A large
number of devotees come here during Ashtami (April & Oct.) for devotion.
Tarkeshwar Mahadev (30 km.)
This Shiv temple situated at an altitude of 2092 mtrs., on top of a hillock surrounded by a thick
forest of deodar, blue pine and oak, is among one of the ancient sidhpeeth. The highlight of this
place is that even at an altitude of 2092 mtrs. there are water pools.

Page 6/15

Activities & things to do: There are amazing mountain views of the Western Himalayas from a
number of vantage points in Lansdowne like Snow View and Tip and Top. Like other hill stations
in north India, Lansdowne too has its fair share of temples and shrines, most of them devoted to
the various forms of the Mother Goddess. St Marys Church, Tip and Top and the Garhwal
Regimental Centre are worth a visit. Walking to different vantage points is the main activity. You
can see the snow filled peaks in the distance on a clear day.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Light woolen clothing for summer and heavy
woolen garments for winter. Carry rain protection gear in all seasons.
Well-connected by a motorable road - Delhi (295 km.), Haridwar (95 km.) & Dehradun (150
km.). Lansdowne is also linked by a motorable road to almost all the important cities in
Uttaranchal. Delhi via Meerut, Mawana, Bijnor, Najibabad, Kotdwar on a good road most of the
time! There are many eating places with clean restroom facilities. Crossing over the River
Ramganga is awesome." - Ranee, Goa, Sep 22, 2007

Trip to Lansdowne (Hidden paradise)

"As usual on 23rd march, which was a Friday, I was working in my office, but my heart and mind
was not focused. I was feeling my sweat dripping on my neck; Friday hot afternoon was killing
me. I just open my computer and started searching for the closest hilly destination around Delhi,
and in result I found Lansdowne, after gathering all possible information about and around
Lansdowne, I started packing my bag to move out for a location which I have never seen.
Saturday early morning around 6 Oclock I took out my car, filled up my gas tank from nearest
gas station and moved forward towards my destination. It took hardly 1 hour for me to reach
Meerut. But till Meerut road was so bad that my car was begging me to move off the road. The
moment I take right turn to Bijnor, whole picture get changed. Road became more wider and
smoother along with huge green trees along side to the road. Meerut to Kotdwar, road was very
good and comfortable. The moment I crossed kotdwar, the hills came in front of me, and road
started taking deep curves, Lansdowne was just 45 Kms far from me now. I just accelerated my
car speed and started enjoying the long green pine trees. Actually Lansdowne is also a
cantonment area for Garhwal Regiment. When I reached in Lansdowne city I see army
personals marching and doing daily exercise side of the roads. The view of the mountains was
very beautiful and graceful. Chilling breeze was blowing everywhere.
There were lots of place to visit, i.e. Tipni Top, Bhim Pakora, Tiger Den, Old Churches and lots
more.
Lansdowne is basically an ideal place to have long and long walks, trekking, and camping.
Peoples can experience wild life in nights, can do fire camping, and there are lots of things to
do.
For accommodation there are lots of place to stay, but I preferred Anand Retreat, the reason
was that basically its a Jungle resort and its 3 kms far from the main city, so during my whole
stay I didnt seen a single moving vehicle around me.
I have enjoyed a very beautiful sunset and sunrise during my stay. Lansdowne can be a idle
place for bird watching and photography. The Himalayan range is clearly viewable from this
place. People can spent whole day by watching all these things.
Page 7/15

After spending a whole day I realize one thing that my sweat was not dripping off on my neck,
and that was the most beautiful moment, which I feel during my stay in Lansdowne.
Food, sight-seeing and shopping: You will not find continental dishes over there, but yeah sure
you will find good allo ka paranthas and great Dal tadka. Do not miss Aloo-paratha with butter
and locally made Mix pickle.
Activities & things to do: Trekking, Long walks, Bird watching, Camping.
Travel tips, How to reach, travel warnings etc: Route is DELHI - MEERUT - BIJNOR NAZIBABAD - KOTDWAR - LANSDOWNE. (Take a right turn from meerut main bus stand to
get Bijnor highway)" - Mukesh Jarial, Noida, Apr 4, 2007
