The path
Sometimes we ask people to repeat something they have said because we didnt really hear them well or
were half-way paying attention. Other times we ask them to repeat it, not because we didnt hear it, but
because we are not sure that we agree with what they said. More than what did you say? it is did I hear you
correctly? that we are asking. Such is the case in 1 Samuel 23. The Lord has just given David a directive to take
his men and launch an attack against the Philistines. But David and his men are afraid, and they dont think
that they can defeat the Philistines. So David comes back to the Lord and asks him again. Verse 4 says once
again, David inquired of the Lord It was very clear what the Lord had spoken to him but David wants to
make sure. Did I hear you correctly? Are you sure about this?
Im so thankful that the Lord does not grow weary in our coming to Him again and again. The complexities
of life, the frustrations that we face, the difficulties of everyday decisions often cause us to question if we are
doing the right thing. Did I hear you correctly, Lord? It is comforting to know that we have an Eternal Father
in heaven who loves us and wants to guide our steps. And it is reassuring that through baptism, we can come
into contact with the atoning blood of His precious Son and be cleansed of our sins. Thank you, Lord!
It was reported to David: Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and raiding the threshing floors.
So David inquired of the Lord: Should I launch an attack against these Philistines? The Lord answered David,
Launch an attack against the Philistines and rescue Keilah. But Davids men said to him, Look, we are afraid
here in Judah; how much more if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces! Once again, David inquired of
the Lord, and the Lord answered him: Go at once to Keilah, for I will hand the Philistines over to you. Then
David and his men went to Keilah, fought against the Philistines, drove their livestock away, and inflicted
heavy losses on them. So David rescued the inhabitants of Keilah. (1 Samuel 23:1-5)
