Sunday 20 March will

see the road from Sale to
Bairnsdale full of spirited
riders once more, with
riders taking part in the
annual challenge to raise
much needed funds to help
homeless pets.
Each year Animal Aid
receives over 6,000 animals
in need through no fault
of their own. Funds raised
go towards feeding, shelter
and caring for these cats,
dogs, pocket pets and small
livestock.

With
no
government
funding, Animal Aid rely
on the generosity of the
community to help these
animals.

The ride consists of 30km

or the full 95km route, it
is important to encourage
fellow participants, after all
this is a ride to raise money
for homeless animals not a
race.
The ride commences at
Animal Aids Gippsland
shelter in Fulham, runs
through

Mardi Gras Time Again In Maffra

Beginning in 1958, The
Rotary Club of Maffra Mardi
Gras community fundraiser
is one of Wellington Shire's
oldest events. Initiated
to raise funds for the
Maffra
hospital,
today
local community groups
nominate an entrant to
represent their organisation,
and a friendly six week
period of fundraising rivalry

runs from early February.

The Maffra Mardi Gras
on Saturday, 19 March,
culminates with a street
parade followed by the
announcement
of
the
winner the most successful
fundraiser. The evening will
include market and food
stalls, street entertainment,
carnival rides, face painting

and an animal nursery

before the street parade.
The Mardi Gras is a proven
family-friendly event, with
opportunities for many
community organisations
to raise some much needed
funds at the beginning of the
calendar year. Organisations
can also raise funds by
operating one of the many

activity and food stalls on

the evening. Entries in
the Parade compete for a
financial prize, which are
available for several different
categories.
The theme for 2016 will
be
"RIO
Olympics",
acknowledging the 2016
Olympics to be held in
Brazil, and Australias love of
sport and celebration.

2016 Entrants
Katie Armistead, Sale City
Football Netball Club. The
clubs netball courts have
been deemed unsuitable for
play and urgently have to be
resurfaced. The fundraising
will go towards this to save
expense of hiring other
courts for practice and
games and return their
home advantage. The club
also entered last year when
Sam Cooke raised funds
for to provide lights for
the netball court (so they

didnt have to pay rent for

practice sessions) and add a
warm-up practice ring and
improve a footpath area.
Jess
Humphrey,
Groundwork
Youth
Theatre. This local theatre
group appears regularly at
the Shakespeare festival in
Stratford but this year has
been invited to perform in
Stratford on Avon in the UK
to mark 400th anniversary
of Shakespeares death. They
developed a play, based on
Taming of the Shrew, which
more accurately reflects
modern
attitudes
and
was used to launch White
Ribbon Day in Gippsland.
They are fundraising to
pay the cost of travel and
accommodation for their
UK trip.
Emma Jones, Maffra and
District Car Club. The
club marks 50 years since
its formation and is raising
funds to enable the club to

offer more courses for young

drivers.

Kelly
Cairns,
Maffra
Gymnastics.
The
Gymnastic Club boasts
more than 500 users each
week and has a waiting
list for many classes. The
club is hoping to kickstart
an extension to the gym at
Maffras Cameron Sporting
Complex which has been on
the drawing board for well
over a decade.

Courtney Savige, Maffra

District
Hospital

Courtney, a nurse at the

hospital, and her committee
are raising funds to improve
the facilities and make it
more home-like for the
residents.

A Mothers Mission

Sue Todd has been on

a mission to find good
samaritan Monica for 11
years, after Monica helped
her son out when he had no
money for fuel to get home.
Sue tragically lost her son a
few months later and found
a touching letter he had
written to Monica that he
had carried with him until
the day he passed away.
Sue would like to deliver
the letter to Monica as she
knows that her son David
would want Monica to get
his letter.

East Gippsland Shire News

You can read Sues story

below and if you have any
information that may help
Sue in her search please
contact her via Facebook
or messages can be relayed
through The Gippslander
Office on 5176 5193.
My son David loved camping
at Jamieson. He and his
girlfriend Sam were there
over Christmas/New Year
in 2005, in separate cars,
and they came home on
the 1st of January 2005. He
tried to fill up with petrol at

Gaffneys servo in Mansfield,

but his credit card wouldn't
work. (probably maxed
out). A lady by the name of
Monica paid for his fuel, she
had been talking to David's
Sam on the radio when
they were coming down the
mountain, as she was there
with her friend called Sam,
and had called for her. The
wrong Sam answered, but
they got talking anyway.
Monica recognised David
from what Sam had told
her about him. David got
Monica's name and address,
and had every intention of
re-paying her. A week after

Innovative Garden Displays Get The Thumbs Up

Some produce from East

Gippsland Shire Councils
innovative garden bed displays
is available at the Bairnsdale
Customer Service Centre.

The towns Main Street Gardens

have featured displays of edible
plants for three to four years;
this summers crop included
five-colour silverbeet, sage,
chives and basil.

With the summer herbs and

vegetables coming to the end
of their season, some will be
harvested and available free
at the new Customer Service
Centre at 24 Service Street.

The Shires Parks and Gardens

Supervisor, Dave Richardson,
said the idea was to create a bit
of wow factor.

The Parks and Gardens team

wanted to create a discussion
piece that would also encourage
people to think about what
they can grow at home, Mr
Richardson said.

It helps show people what

can be grown in this climate
and that you dont need to use
flowers to make your garden
beds attractive and colourful.
It didnt take long for the
popular initiative to become
a conversation point on a
local Facebook page, with
some suggestions on how the
Shire could be distributing the
produce.
Following the suggestions on
how the public can get access
to the crop, the Shires parks

and gardens staff have been

harvesting the crop and taking
it to the Shires Customer
Service Centre at 24 Service
Street (next to the Bairnsdale
Library) where the public is
encouraged to take what they
need for their cooking (after
first giving it a good wash).
Its anticipated that the
harvesting will continue over
the next few weeks before the
crop starts going to seed. The
Shire is already planning some
future crops that will create
further conversation points
and will look at donating some
of the produce to community
kitchens.

he got home his ex-wife

stole his bag, which had his
wallet with the address in it.
He had no idea how to find
her, although Sam seems
to think she was from
somewhere in Gippsland.
He wrote Monica a lovely
letter, which he put in
his new wallet. 2 months
later he was killed in a car
accident, and the letter was
the first we knew about all
this.

I want to find this lady, and

repay her, but I'm having no
luck. Somewhere out there
is a lady who thinks David is
dishonest for not repaying

her.

If anyone knows a Monica

who goes camping at
Jamieson, can you please
tell her I'm looking for her,
and let me know how to
contact her and give her the
letter he wrote
If you've got this far, thank
you for reading it.

I have put up flyers at

100th Anniversary of Eastern Mine at the State Coal Mine Wonthaggi

If you havent yet been to

visit the State Coal Mine in
Wonthaggi, heres a great
opportunity to do so and
be a part of history as well.
Sunday March 13th, from
10am to 3pm, the State
Coal Mine in Wonthaggi
is having the Coal Miners
Country Fair. Not only is
this a long weekend, but
the date commemorates
the 100th Anniversary
of Eastern Mine;
with
historical bus tours on
the day to various mine
related sites in Wonthaggi,
live music, market stalls,
jumping castle, animal
farm, and loads of activities
for young and old.
Ive long been a supporter
of this historic site as its a
place where you can actually

go and see Australian

History in person by taking
an underground mine
tour and seeing exactly
what our miners had to
endure. But you can also
witness the mateship and
community spirit still in
existence by seeing the
countless volunteers who
assist with the running
and maintenance of the
State Coal Mine Tourist
Attraction today.

Ive been going on the tours

for years now, and each time
I go back I learn something
new. Some of the actual tour
guides taking you on the tour
above ground and below
actually worked at the mine
when it was in operation.
Its really exciting to gather
in the hard hat room for

a pre- tour briefing. Your

heart races as you prepare
to go underground, and
nothing prepares you for the
dark dank conditions when
you start to descend. As an
educational tool, the mine
is brilliant from a social,
historical, and geological
aspect. As a fun family
activity, its interactive,
informative, and loads of
fun!

The Friends of the State Coal

Mine (the largest volunteer
group in Parks Victoria,
numbering around 200
members) are calling on all
ex employees of the mine to
contact them and register
to be an official part of this
100th commemoration. Ex
employees should call 03
5672 3053. The event is open

to the public and activities

and entertainment will be
provided. As this is again
a volunteer run event gold
coin donations would be
appreciated on the day.

You cant leave a place such

as this without it having
touched you in some way. I
always leave feeling amazed
by what our forefathers
endured and touched by the
generosity of the volunteers.
Sunday March 13 is going to
be special, so come and be a
part of it.

Clean Up Australia
Baw Baw Shire Council will
host a Clean Up Australia
Day event on Sunday 6
March 2016 at Burke Street
Park, Warragul.
The event will begin with a
briefing for all participants
at 10.00am and will finish
at 12.00pm, with a barbecue
lunch provided.
Mayor of Baw Baw Shire
Councillor
Joe
Gauci
encouraged the community
to get involved in the
Australia-wide movement.
Clean Up Australia Day
is a great chance to work
together as a community
and make a difference to
the health of our local
environment.

Along with a number of

community-run Clean Up
Australia Day events being
held throughout the Shire,
were pleased to be able to
host our own and thank our
volunteers with a barbecue
lunch following the cleanup.
Burke Street Park is a
popular thoroughfare and
unfortunately some people
dont always use the bins
provided to dispose of their
litter. This litter often ends
up in Hazel Creek, which
flows through the park and
ultimately makes its way
into the Gippsland Lakes
Catchment.

KATHY BURGSTAHLER

Real Estate

FOR SALE

Yarrawonga Vic 3730

48 Lakeviews Circuit

Yarrawonga?... Yes Kathy really does go everywhere.

I operate as a sole trader, with NO franchise,

NO office, NO scripts and my focus is on
good old fashioned customer service.

Kathy Burgstahler

Kathy Burgstahler Real Estate is the first fully mobile realtor with
no office. Kathy is able to sell real estate in all parts of Victoria,
specialising in real customer service and taking real estate back to
a trusted profession with a family realtor.
Because Kathy is not restricted to a particular region and makes
full use of the Internet Kathys buyers come from all over Victoria
(and even interstate). As a result, she tends to sell property quite
quickly, even those that perhaps had not previously sold via the
more traditional methods.
One of Kathys many achievements was a recent sale of a property
in Wonthaggi within 14 days for well above the asking price.

Unique Character of Gippsland

Unique Characters of Gippsland

Presents Kathy Burgstahler
What you see is what you
get with Kathy Burgstahlerbouncy, bubbly, passionate,
honest to a fault, and always
wearing something hot
pink and black (her two
favourite colours, and her
big obsession).
Growing up an only child,
the daughter of immigrants
fleeing the Hungarian
Revolution, rather than be
spoiled she was taught that
nothing is achieved without
dedication and hard work.
But she was also taught that
nothing is as important as
making a difference. She
watched her parents throw
everything into running
their own small business
but at the same time saw her
father regularly going off to
volunteer with the homeless
and forever bringing home
some injured bird or animal
hed rescued.

from overseas without

considering that our market
is different. She saw that this
was affecting both staff and
clients in a negative way and
decided to tackle it head
on. Kathy decided to turn
customer service training
on its head- by taking the
emphasis OFF statistics and
key performance indicators
and take it back to good
old fashioned customer
service, with training being

done FOR staff and not

TO them. Staff retention
levels increased wherever
she worked, along with
customer satisfaction. As a
result, Kathy would finish
up with one contracted role
and be invited straight into
another.
Taking a brief hiatus
in 2007, Kathy and her
husband
relocated
to
Queensland. Purchasing an
old rundown Queenslander

Kathy also has a passion

of giving back to her
communitysomething
she says she learned from
watching her father. Three
years as President of
her local resident group
saw her getting a lot of
satisfaction in creating a
business discount scheme
encouraging residents to
shop locally. This also led
to her being awarded the

Working in many of the

major real estate franchises
had made her realise that
she wanted to do things
differently. She decided
to take her 30 years of
customer experience and
use it turn real estate on its
head this time.
Kathy started her own
agency back in January 2014,
with NO office- the first fully
mobile real estate agency in
Victoria. She is a sole trader,
with no franchises either,
and focuses on good old
fashioned customer service.
Because of her philosophy
of putting her clients first,
she has gained many repeat
customers and gained more
through word of mouth
referrals.
Kathy believes
in not listing anything and
everything to satisfy her
bottom line, she is about
doing what it takes for her
clients. One client recently

Kathy started her career by

deciding to venture into
the corporate world. She
spent over 30 years working
for major multinationals,
training staff in customer
service. At the time, she
successfully
identified
the trend for Australian
firms to grab on to ideas
their home, much to Kathys
joy and satisfaction. Both
only thought they had to
sell due to health concerns.
Kathy organised a visiting
home nurse for one seller
and assisted in obtaining a
stair lift for another. Being
able to make a difference to
her clients is what motivates
Kathy, even if it means
losing a sale.

on acreage, this is where

Kathy discovered her love
and talent for real estate.
After taking one year to
completely renovate the
house with no outside help,
and getting involved with
property development, the
pair returned to Victoria
and settled in Cardinia
Shire. Kathy began to work
at various real estate firms
and started volunteering
heavily in her community.

Pakenham News Person of

the Year in 2012. For her
dedication to her clients
and going the extra mile,
she won the Vocational
Excellence
Award
for
Customer Service by the
Rotary Club of Pakenham.
Kathy volunteered weekly
for 3 years at a local nursing
home, assisting the elderly,
and presently sponsors
several community gardens
and is assisting other
residents groups to get
established.
Another
outstanding
achievement in Kathys
career was when she was
featured in Top Agent
Magazine (A worldwide
Publication featuring top
agents around the globe)
and was chosen to be on the
May 2015 cover.

One of Cummunity Garden Kathy Sponsors

Kathy also loves spending

quality time with her
husband. She has made a
commitment to try and
challenge herself once a
month to try some sort of
crazy adventure. She has
made herself a Bucket List
which she intends to tick off.
This helps her to live by her
motto of being the best she
can be and also motivates
her to try new things and
to challenge herself. There
have been some fun and
zany things that she has
already ticked off so far,
such as climbing the Sydney
Harbour Bridge (to face her
fear of heights), doing some
hot laps in a V8 supercar
& off road rally car (she
ended up covered in mud
and giggling her head off),
and even pushing herself
to go clay target shooting
with a rifle (she had black
and blue bruises all over
her shoulders and arms, but
loved every second of it!).
Any spare time that she
has is also spent doing
things
in
Gippsland.
From the second she and
her husband returned to
Victoria from Queensland,
Kathy fell in love with the
area. From climbing Mount
Cannibal, to hiking in the
Tarra Bulga National Park,
visiting the underground
mines at Wonthaggi and

had this to say about Kathythank you seems insufficient

to show my gratitude for how
she handled the sale of my
property. My boys and I felt
like we were truly important
and not just a way for her
to earn an income. It shone
through at every single
meeting that she genuinely

Gippsland is Kathys huge
obsession.
The fresh food and produce
is second to none in her
opinion, the people so
genuine and down to earth
that she feels right at home,
and there are just so many
things to see and do in
Gippsland that Kathy cant
get enough! Gippsland is her
main place to go outdoors
and exercise, her main place
to buy her fruit and veggies,
and her main place to go
and relax.
Kathy
is
particularly
passionate and excited about
being able to sell residential
real

throughout
Gippsland. Because she is
mobile and sells everywhere,

her clients and buyers come

from everywhere- even from
interstate. Because she is so
passionate about Gippsland,
she enjoys introducing new
people to the region and
watching them enjoy it as
much as she does. Recently,

cares and how much she loves

what she does. Nothing was
too much trouble. In fact, she
went above and beyond with
everything. From the minute
she walked in, everything
was about us.
Another two clients never
actually ended up selling
for over the asking price. She
did this by making full use
of the internet advertising
it far and wide, and by
making up information
packs on Wonthaggi which
she personally delivered
to all prospective buyers
along with some fresh
produce from the area! Her
excitement and enthusiasm
was contagious & the new
owners ended up falling
head over heels in love with
not just the house Kathy was
selling but Wonthaggi itself.
I am sure you would agree
that Kathys story is one
that surely makes you
feel that we all want to be
better people and take our
passions for the things we
love and use them to the
benefit of all around us.

Howdy folks!
Whoopee! Its March! We can
do almost anything we want
in the garden:
Feed, prune, shift plants, add
some new ones including,
bulbs, veggies and citrus,
which brings us to a question
weve had just lately. Which
citrus trees are available that
do well here? Answer: Lots!!
Originally from Asia, no home
should be without at least
one!
So just to name a few:
Lemons: Eureka and Lisbon,
both have the same lemony
flavour with thick pitted skin
which adheres to the fruit.

Limes: Whats a G&T or
Corona without a lime? The
most popular one here is the
Tahitian, its hardy, almost
thornless and juicy. One with
an almost continuous crop
is the Australian Lime. If left
on the tree it becomes very
sweet!
Watch the thorns on the Kaffir!
Im positive they can leap out
and bite you, but the leaves
are great in Asian cooking.

Adapted from the novel of the

same name by author Emma
Donoghue, Room is an CanadianIrish production centred on a young
mother and her 5-year-old son,
held captive for several years in an
enclosed space. After a desperate
escape, the boy, Jack is finally
able to experience the outside
world free from the confines of
his former surroundings, while
his mother struggles in coming to
terms with the freedom she has
longed for her and her child.
During the first 30 minutes, doubt
quickly entered my mind as to
whether or not Ill be able to
finish watching this film. Its no
an exaggeration when I say that
Room is extremely distressing;
confronting the viewer with the

absolute worst of human cruelty

and depravity. Although thankfully,
the lingering despair throughout
the scenes of forceful confinement
are off-set well by the touching
relationship between mother and
child. Their bond is unbreakably
strong, not to mention the efforts
made towards maintaining a sense
of normality despite the appalling
conditions.
The biggest surprise for me and
probably the main reason why the
film has been so well received is the
break from convention in regards
to subsequent legal proceedings
following the escape. Instead of
transitioning into a courtroom drama
hybrid, the focus remains solely on
the two leads. While on the same
journey into society the contrast
between the distinct characters is
handled brilliantly, elevating the
film to an unprecedented level of
emotional impact. Performances
excel during this crucial part of the
story, with Jacob Tremblay who is
strikingly realistic as Jack; initially
frightened by the enormity of his
new world, but soon learning to

connect with others and embrace

his new and exciting life. Brie Larson
as the mother, physically exudes
the heavy burden of a stolen youth
and unlawful imprisonment; while
relieved at finally being free she
quickly becomes disillusioned,
harbouring resentment towards the
world she was once firmly apart of.
You could call it an Oscar-bait role,
but you would not only be degrading
the film, but the young actress
herself, who very much deserves the
prized golden statue.
Room is now showing in theatres
across Australia and despite the
limited release in Victoria thanks
to the questionable logic of Village
Cinemas, Im glad I made the extra
effort to see it.

Rule No. 1 Of 11 Rules For

Collecting: Do Your Homework
We can't emphasis this rule
too much: you really need
to do your homework.
Luckily the internet makes
it a lot easier to uncover

information these days,

but being informed also
involves getting out and
seeing - touching - examples
of whatever it is you want to

collect.

Make yourself familiar with

the market; know what
items are selling for how
much and you'll have a
much better idea of whether
something is a good buy or
not when it turns up in front
of you.
Auctions are a very good
way to keep tabs on the
market by tracking the sale
price of items that interest
you (don't forget to factor in
the buyer's premium).

The internet is also handy for

research when something is
listed as 'rare'. If you can find
several other near-identical
pieces offered for sale after a
quick Google search, it isn't
rare.

It's always a good idea to

invest in specialist books
and magazines, go to
exhibitions and consult
museums. Your chosen field
of collecting may have been
all the rage 150 years ago
but that doesn't mean there
isn't new information being
uncovered all the time. Risk
is reduced by information.

Tinamba Festival

Wine And Dine In Tinamba

It just gets better and better!
Don't miss a great day out
at this year's Tinamba Food
and Wine Festival. With
the best of our local wines,
food, produce and music,
it's one of Gippsland's most
anticipated annual events.
Come along and join us for
a great day, and a fantastic
opportunity to taste the new
2015 vintages.

Tinamba Food and Wine

Festival is held annually in
Tinamba. The Food and
Wine Festival is held on the
road right out the front of
the Tinamba pub. The road

is shut in the town and the

party festival atmosphere
is in full swing on the main
road.

The Tinamba Food and

Wine Festival showcases
local wineries and food
producers. Local musicians
are also asked to play to the
crowds throughout the day
bringing a really relaxing
atmosphere to the day. As
the road is shut, tables and
chairs have been set up for
people to eat at and socialise
with friends. You are
welcome to bring blankets
to sit on the nature strip and

enjoy the day.

Amazing food is from local
restaurants and gourmet
food producers. Many of the
stalls have samples of the
food they are selling.
So mark Sunday 3rd April
on you calendar and and
come and enjoy the fun and
food.
