What Is Locus of Control - PSYCHOLOGY

Locus of control refers to a person's belief about whether outcomes result from their own actions or from external forces outside their control. Julian Rotter originally developed the concept in the 1950s to understand how beliefs about reinforcement guide attitudes and behaviors. People with an internal locus of control believe their efforts determine outcomes, while those with an external locus of control believe fate, luck or powerful others control outcomes. Research finds an internal locus of control is generally healthier and associated with greater achievement, though overly internal people may become anxious if they lack competence or opportunity. Locus of control can shift depending on life circumstances and experiences.
