COURSE TITLE:
COURSE CODE:
EASR237
ECTS CREDITS:
LEVEL OF STUDY:
5 (UK), 6 (EQF)
PREQUISITES:
RATIONALE:
The course aims to provide education and training in the area of Safety Engineering and Risk
Management, in a unified approach. Safety Engineering & Risk Management is a horizontal
subject relevant to all engineering disciplines and of crucial importance for any managerial or
operational activity. The course provides all necessary tools for conducting risk analysis and
based on that to proceed to safety engineering solutions. Finally, the topic is directly and
indirectly linked to other engineering courses.
COURSE DESCRIPTOR:
The course will cover topics on Risk Management, Accidents, Safety Engineering and
Occupational Safety and Health
COURSE AIMS:
As engineering systems become more complex, it becomes increasingly difficult to identify
safety risks and to control their impact. Safety Engineering & Risk Management touch upon
every aspect of any engineered process (Chemical, Mechanical, Civil and Electric &
Electronic), from the system design all the way through waste disposal. This course provides
the students with basic knowledge on safety engineering and risk analysis, including
occupational safety and health issues. The course includes safety techniques used in various
industries, types of hazard, accidents causes, techniques for investigating accidents and other
relevant topics of interest.
ASSESSED LEARNING OUTCOMES:
On successful completion, the students will be expected to be able to:
1. Explain what is Hazard, Risk, Barriers & Mitigation measures.
2. Perform hazard identification in simple systems.
3. Apply Qualitative, semi-Quantitative and Quantitative/Probabilistic Risk Analysis
methods.
4. Identify Accident Prevention methods and conduct basic Accidents Analysis.
5. Recognize and apply safety engineering measures.
6. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of national and international standards, codes &
legislation.
7. Describe Occupational Hazards and explain the use of Personal Protective Equipment
