COVID-19 Growth of Infection

Group: 3 GALATIANS Section : BORGIA

Solve the following problem.

1. Given an infectious disease, such as COVID-19,   is the basic reproduction number of the
disease: the average number of people an infected person goes on to infect, given that
everyone in the population is susceptible to the disease. For COVID-19 this is currently
estimated to lie between 2 and 2.5. For seasonal strains of flu, it lies between 0.9 and 2.1.
And for measles it is a whopping 12 to 18.

a. You can see how a large enough   leads to a rapid spread of the disease. For example,
if   is equal to 2 then a single infected person generates the following growth of new
infections: see table below

Complete the table to find the number of infections for every generation. (3 points)

Name of the assigned member/s: Maria Angelica Bantayan

Generation Number of infections Expressed in exponents
1
1st 2 2
2
2nd 4 2
3
3rd 8 2
7th 128 2⁷

9th 512 2⁹

12th 4096 2¹²

(a) How many infections will there be in the 21st generation? (2 points)

Name of the assigned member/s: Maria Angelica Bantayan

Based on the chart, there will be 2,097,152 infections at the 21st-generation spread. Since we
need to find 2^21 which will be the number of infections.

(b) Write an equation using exponents for y the number of infections and x number of
generations? (2 points)

Name of the assigned member/s: Miguel Barrios and Isaac Provendido

Let x be the number of generations.

Let y be the number of infections.

2^21x + 8y = 2,097,152
2,097,152 + 8y

(c) Assuming a person is only infectious for a week in 1 generation spread, at this rate, how
many weeks will it take for the Philippine population of 109,035,343 to get infected?
(hint: use the data from the table)
Show your solution. (3 points)
Name of the assigned member/s: Paulin Sanano and Carlene Silagan

Assuming that a person only has affection for a week in 1 generation spread, it will
take 27 weeks to infect 109,035,343 people in the Philippines.

Let x be the number of weeks.

Let y be the number of infections.

y = 109,035,343
x = 26.70 (round off)
x = 27
