QUESTION 1

1.1 Kiren invests R12 500 for 5 years at 12% per annum compounded
monthly for the first 2 years and 14% per annum compounded
semi-annually for the next 3 years. How much will Kiren receive in
total after 5 years? (4)

1.2 The office computers for a business are currently worth R400 000.
Calculate the value of these computers after 6 years, if the rate of
depreciation is 16% per annum calculated on a linear basis. (2)

1.3 Calculate the effective interest rate p.a. if the nominal rate is 8,9%
p.a., compounded monthly. (Correct to TWO decimal places) (3)

1.4 Thabiso decided to start saving money for his daughter’s future
education. He immediately deposited R4 000 into a savings
account. Three years later, he deposited a further R5 000 into the
account. One year later, he withdrew R2 000 in order to do repairs
around the house.

His daughter needed the money four years after his withdrawal of
R2 000.

The interest rate for the first 3 years was 15% per annum
compounded monthly. The interest rate for the remaining 5 years
was 16% per annum compounded quarterly.

Calculate the future value of his money at the end of the savings
period which lasted 8 years.

QUESTION 2

2.1 A group of 10 000 people were tested for colour blindness and the
results are shown in the table.

Table 2.1: Contingency table

Male Female Total

Colour blind 393 15 408

Normal 4 517 5 075 9 592

Total 4 910 5 090 10 000

2.1.1 If a person is chosen at random, what is the probability that

the person is a colour blind male? (2)

2.1.2 Does the evidence support the statement that colour

blindness is independent of gender? Motivate your answer
by showing your calculations. (3)

2.2 A box contains 3 triangles (T), 2 squares (S) and 1 hexagon (H).

Each of the 6 objects has an equal chance of being selected at

random from the box. An object is selected at random, NOT
REPLACED, and then a second object is selected at random.

2.2.1 Represent this selection process in a tree diagram, clearly

indicating all probabilities in fraction form. (6)

Use your probability tree (or otherwise) to calculate the following:

2.2.2 The probability of selecting a hexagon and then a triangle. (1)

2.2.3 The probability of selecting two identical shapes. (2)

QUESTION 3

In a survey carried out amongst Grade 11 learners at UCT Online High

School, the learners were required to indicate whether they played the
following kinds of sport:

● Cricket (C)

● Rugby (R)

● Soccer (S)

In the process of summarising the information, the number of learners

that played all three sports was overlooked. The information gathered is
shown in the Venn diagram below.

Figure 3.1: Venn diagram

3.1 How many learners do NOT play cricket, rugby or soccer? (1)

3.2 If there are 160 learners in Grade 11, determine the number of
learners who play ALL three kinds of sport. (2)

3.3 If it is given that 𝑥 = 10, calculate the probability that a learner

selected at random from Grade 11 will be playing soccer. Indicate
your answer correct to THREE decimal places. (3)

3.4 A Grade 11 learner is randomly chosen. Show that the probability

that the learner participates in at least 2 kinds of sport, is
approximately 33%. (3)

QUESTION 4

4.1 The values in a data set are written in ascending order. None of the
values in the data set are repeated:

Table 4.1: Data set in ascending order

5 𝑎 19 𝑏 𝑐 𝑑 35

Determine the values of 𝑎, 𝑏, 𝑐, and 𝑑 if:

● The median is 20.

● The interquartile range is 16.
● The upper quartile is twice the lower quartile.
● The mean is 22.

4.2 The figures in the table below are the ages of a random sample of
30 people who live in the same apartment building.

Table 4.2: Ages of 30 people

29 26 31 42 38 45 35 37 38 38

36 39 49 40 32 32 34 27 56 29

33 31 33 52 44 32 30 38 42 33

4.2.1 Copy and complete the frequency table:

Table 4.2.1: Frequency table

Age intervals Tally Frequency

25 ≤ 𝑥 < 33

33 ≤ 𝑥 < 41

41 ≤ 𝑥 < 49

49 ≤ 𝑥 < 57
