TEACHERS WITHOUT BORDERS

PROGRAMME
BROUGHT TO YOU BY

With grateful thanks to our associate partners, The National Department of Basic Education, The Independent
Examinations Board, Siyavula Education, Smarticks, Noteshare, Lemonlicious, datacentrix, and most of all, to
the schools and teachers from both the public and private education sectors who as founder contributors,
have lent content to the Teachers without Borders programme, for the benefit of all South Africa's learners.

In Bill Gates words, at the Mandela Day ‘Living Together’ address: “Maintaining the quality of this country’s
higher education system while expanding access to more students will not be easy. But it’s critical to
South Africa’s future” – working together, we can help achieve this."

QUESTION 3
On 8 March 2014 an Air Malaysia flight went missing after it took off from Kuala Lumpur Airport
(point A). It flew in the direction of China, but at point B it turned around and flew to point C
where air traffic control lost contact with the plane. The coordinates of the points are
𝐴(13; −1), 𝐵(𝑥; 12) and 𝐶(−3; 9) and are shown on the diagram below:

B (𝒙; 𝟏𝟐)
C (−𝟑; 𝟗)

C B
A (𝟏𝟑; −𝟏)

3.1 Determine how far the plane was from the airport when the signal was lost (i.e. the distance
from A to C), leaving your answer in surd form. (2)
3.2 Determine the midpoint M of AC. (2)
3.3 Calculate the gradient of AC (2)
3.4 If BM is perpendicular to AC, what is the value of 𝒙? (4)
3.5 Assuming the coordinates of B are(𝟏𝟎; 𝟏𝟐), find the area of the triangle created by points
A, B and C (4)
