only at the age of 12. I
was elated to hold a schoolbag and books in my handfinally
all that stuff belonged to me, she
recalled fondly.
When she was young, a polio attack sapped the strength in Fathimas legs, preventing her from going
to school early. The youngest of
seven siblings, she wanted to follow
in the footsteps of her schoolgoing
brothers and sisters but her parents
were apprehensive. She went to third
grade straight away and got a double
promotion.
EnAble India, a national not-forprofit organization that trains the
disabled and helps them get employment, got Fathima her first job at a
call centre. She continued to pursue
graduation in commerce through
correspondence and has switched
three jobs since.
Avinash Sonnad, who suffers
from cerebral palsy, was brought by
his parents from Vijayapura to Bengaluru for treatment when he was
six months old. Educated at the Spastics Society of Kar nataka
and Christ College, he is now a software engineer and is assisted by a
manager and a computer that talks
back to him.
Fathima and Sonnad are among
4,500 persons with disabilities employed by EnAble India in 600 companies in 26 cities and 28 sectors over
the past decade. And 70% of them
have landed jobs in Karnataka, says
Dipesh Sutariya, co-founder and
CEO, EnAble India. He attributes
Karnatakas success to employers
who are open to hiring the disabled.
EnAble India is the Placement
Cell of the department for the empowerment of differently abled and
senior citizens, government of Karnataka; it finds jobs for 500-700 persons every year. Karnataka has employed 815 disabled persons through

disabilities from 2013-2015

nAble India has created

a job categorization
model wherein it has
figured out 272 roles in 35
functions like technical,
semi-technical, sales and
marketing and HR. This
categorization depends on
the type of disability and
educational qualification.
For example, there are 183
types of roles for the
visually impaired but those
with hearing impairment
can fit into 159 roles. Those
with an educational
qualification less than SSLC
are suitable for only 34
positions whereas those
with one disability who
have a degree meet the
criteria of 117 roles. The
NGO aims not only to impart
training for skill development and get people jobs
but also ensure they are
able to continue work.

Bengaluru: There should be

discipline and methodology in
everything, even in burial and
disposal of bodies, the Karnataka High Court told the government on Wednesday.
The government has come out
with draft rules under the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act
to govern burial of bodies in a methodical manner.
Justice Ram Mohan Reddy
noted that though sections 391 to
400 of the Act, which speak about
burial and disposal of bodies,
have a reference about by-laws,
they are yet to be framed. He adjourning the hearing to January.
The judge declined to vacate
the interim stay order on the 1
acre and 5 guntas land in Jalahalli
where the court had earlier restrained the authorities from permitting burial.
William Mascarenhas and
others wanted quashing of the notification acquiring their land
which is not sufficient for a burial ground. It was alleged that
BBMP is permitting burials in an

It is heartening that there are

organizations working towards the
betterment of the disabled what they
need is inclusivity. Helping them
achieve financial independence will
set them on the right path for life.
While it is heart-warming that the
government and private firms are
doing their bit for these citizens, a lot
more needs to be done. There is a far
bigger number out there which has
missed the benefits. The formula is
obvious, but needs to be implemented:
education and employment.

Speed governor pleas dismissed

The Karnataka High Court on
Wednesday dismissed a batch of
four petitions, including three filed by Kerala-based companies,
manufacturing and marketing
speed governor devices.
There are no apparant circumstances indicating that there
is an unholy nexus between the
commissioner for transport and
road safety and select manufacturers, Justice Anand Byrareddy said. He dismissed the petitions filed by Autograde International Private Limited, Kochi,
and others. The judge said the petitioners do not appear to be manufacturing speed governors, duly
certified, with a pre-set speed limit of 80 km/hour.
The petitioners had challenged the prescription of certain
eligibility standards claiming
that the said conditions were
brought in to benefit two select
companies.
