Textbook (required):
Design and Analysis of Experiments (1999) by A. M. Dean and D.T. Voss. (Springer texts in
statistics).
Other references (not required):
- Design and Analysis of Experiments (6th edition) by Douglas C. Montgomery.
- Statistics for Experimenters: Design, Innovation, and Discovery (2nd Edition) by George E.
P. Box, J. Stuart Hunter, William G. Hunter
- The Theory of the Design of Experiments by D.R. Cox and N. Reid.
Software:
You can use the software of your choice to solve hwk problems or analyze your own data
(for ex: SAS, Matlab, Minitab, Splus, or R). However, only R and Splus will be supported by
the T.F
Prerequisites:
Stat 100 or equivalent, and Math 19a and 19b, or Math 21a and 21b, or equivalent, or above.
Course Requirements and Grading:
- Assigned reading (from textbook) at every class.
- One hwk assignment, solving a set of exercises, every week (usually assigned on
Thursday, due in class the following Thursday). Assignments handed in after the due

factors and nested split plot designs (chapters 17-18-19). Special topics: Analysis of
covariance (Chapter 9) - Response surface methodology (Chapter 16) - Fractional factorial
design (Chapter 15).
Class Attendance:
Be on time (classes begin exactly at 1:07pm); bring textbook, and a calculator; turn off your
cell phones, pdas, and laptops during class. An attendance sheet will be passed around during
