ENP 610 SOCIOLINGUISTICS FINAL PROJECT

Submission deadline: 10 June, 2020

Instructions

STEP 1: Collect samples (of English use, and or a mixture of English and Indonesian) of either
emails, or text messages (sms or wa), or instagram texts, or facebook texts (e.g. inbox
messages / posts) as your data.
Provide general information on the context of your research: who your participants are
(gender, age, cultural background, occupation, status, etc.) but do not mention their real
names (you can use pseudonyms or code to represent your participants).
STEP 2: Design a small text analysis research related to the topic you chose for your Mid-Term
Assignment. For example:
Topic 1: Language and gender (e.g. gender differences in text messaging)
Topic 2: Language and technology (e.g. linguistic features of teenage students’ wa
messages among peers, or between student and teacher)
Topic 3: Language, culture, and politeness (e.g. politeness strategies performed by students
in email to their teachers)
STEP 3: Consult your topic, research questions, and research method to me online immediately.
Consultation period starts from week 9 to week 11 (26 April, 2020). Email me your topic,
research questions, and research method as soon as possible. Every consultation you make
will be awarded with a score (25% of the final project).
STEP 4: Present your preliminary findings (+ 10 minutes) on week 13 and 14 for feedback (the
presentation worth 20% of the final project). Submit your presentation slides to the G-drive
folder on Friday (May 8, 2020) at 22.00 the latest so I can give feedback immediately on
our online meeting.
STEP 5: Write a research report of about 2000 – 3000 words to be submitted on 10 June, 2020 (at
19.00 the latest) both in printed form and in electronic form (put the file in the G-drive
folder and send me an email of notification). Your research report will include:
introduction, theoretical review, methodology, findings (this include data presentation,
analysis, and major findings), and conclusion.

2. The research paper content includes:
 Introduction: introduce briefly the rationale of conducting research on this particular
topic (why it is interesting to be explored), and the content of your paper.
 Theoretical review: Provide a brief review of the theories or key concepts that you use to
analyse your research data (Sometimes you may need to revise your theoretical review,
depending on the expansion of your readings and interview questions and data).
 Methodology: Provide a brief information of the context of the research (the
participants, how many, and their background), how the data was collected (length of the
interview, type of interview), research questions
 Findings: The main findings and analysis (analyze the data and relate the findings with
theories that you have reviewed and how the findings answer the research questions)
 Conclusion: briefly conclude what can be learned from the findings and the implication
to teaching and learning.
