TECHNIQUES IN SELECTING
AND ORGANIZING INFORMATION
Developing an Outline
OUTLINE
a system that helps you see whether your
ideas connect well with one another,
whether you have sufficient evidence to
support the points that you want to
emphasize, and what order of ideas will
work best in your essay or speech
USES
A FORMAL OUTLINE HAS FOUR USES:
1.It helps a writer to clarify his purpose and to
organize his material to achieve that purpose.
2.It offers a convenient way of testing the
proposed organization of an essay.

A FORMAL OUTLINE HAS FOUR
USES:
A. Outlining to Clarify One’s Purpose

B. Outlining to Test Organization

C. Outlining as Complete Communication

D. Outlining as a Reading Aid

TWO BASIC TYPES
OF OUTLINE
TOPIC OUTLINE
a systematic arrangement that consists of
words and short phrases
useful when arranging ideas hierarchically
to show which are the main points and
which are the sub-points
TWO BASIC TYPES
OF OUTLINE
SENTENCE OUTLINE
functions like a topic outline; however,
instead of simply identifying your main and
sub-points using words and short phrases,
sentences are used to express specific and
complex details
REMEMBER
“There is no rule as to which kind of outline is
better. You just have to choose the one that you
think will work best for your essay or speech.
Outlines can be very specific or very general.
However, it is important to remember that the more
details you have, the farther you will get toward
writing your speech or paper.”
HERE ARE HELPFUL TIPS
ON HOW TO CREATE AN OUTLINE:

Identify the topic

 What is it that you really want to write or talk about?
Identify the main character
What are the main points that you want to emphasize?
Create the sub-categories
What are the sub-categories that will support each main
point or idea?
THE CONVENTIONS OF OUTLINING

A COMPLETE OUTLINE CONSISTS OF THREE PARTS:

1)The Title
2)The Purpose Statement
3)The Body of the Outline
THE CONVENTIONS OF OUTLINING
The MAIN DIVISIONS of the body are represented by ROMAN
NUMERALS; their DIVISIONS in turn, are marked by CAPITAL
LETTERS. Successive divisions are indicated by ARABIC
NUMERALS, SMALL LETTERS, ARABIC NUMERALS IN
PARENTHESIS, and SMALL LETTERS IN PARENTHESIS.
These symbols follow a progressive system of indention so that
the relationship and relative importance of topics may be seen at
a glance.

Prepare an outline of the events that happened in the
selection. Discuss your outline in class.
What can you see from the outline that you have written?
Are the ideas connected to one item to another?
Recall an instance in your life where you sacrificed your
priceless treasure for the sake of the one you love. Why
did you do it? How did it affect your life? Do you have
any regrets?
How did you find the lesson? What new or additional
ideas did you learn after taking up this lesson? What
about those that you can apply in your life? How can you
apply those things in daily living?
