What is emphasis?
- is a form of exaggeration or
amplification making things
bigger in some way than
they really are.
What is emphasis
marker?
- Words that express the
speaker’s stress in a
sentence.
- Words/expressions that
emphasize a point.

Emotive Words
Used to arouse emotion that can
help to influence decisions and
change opinions. Emotive
words have immediate
connotations- happiness, joy,
guilt, sadness, and fear.

Example:
1. This is such a cruel world.
2. The dog was abandoned on
a filthy street.

Personal Pronouns
Using we, you and us to create a
connection between writers and
readers. Personal pronouns can
make the readers feel personally
involved with the topic being
discussed.

EXAGGERATION
Making something seem much
better or much worse than it really
is- that is, to create a false
impression of the subject.

Repetition
Saying the same word or
phrase more than once for
emphasis. Repetition is
used to make sure a
reader remembers key
ideas.

Using commands or instructions to
imperatives to encourage the
audience or readers to do
something quickly. They are also
used to make the audience or
readers feel as if they have no
other choice in forming their
opinions.

Asking questions that
make the audience think.
A rhetorical question is
asked to give effect or to
put emphasis without the
need for real answer.

Using simile, rhyme, alliteration,
assonance, and other literary
devices to build a cleaner image
or picture for the reader; such
words or phrases make ideas
memorable.

These are broad sweeping
