What is emphasis marker? - Words that express the speaker’s stress in a sentence. - Words/expressions that emphasize a point. 01 Emotive Words Used to arouse emotion that can help to influence decisions and change opinions. Emotive words have immediate connotations- happiness, joy, guilt, sadness, and fear. 01 Emotive Words Example: 1. This is such a cruel world. 2. The dog was abandoned on a filthy street. 02 Personal Pronouns Using we, you and us to create a connection between writers and readers. Personal pronouns can make the readers feel personally involved with the topic being discussed. 02 Personal Pronouns Example: 1. Together, we can make it. 2. You are the captain of your soul. 03 EXAGGERATION Making something seem much better or much worse than it really is- that is, to create a false impression of the subject. 03 EXAGGERATION Example: - She has a heart as big as the world. 04 Repetition Saying the same word or phrase more than once for emphasis. Repetition is used to make sure a reader remembers key ideas. 04 Repetition Example: - Seek righteousness, seek meekness. 05 IMPERATIVES Using commands or instructions to imperatives to encourage the audience or readers to do something quickly. They are also used to make the audience or readers feel as if they have no other choice in forming their opinions. 05 IMPERATIVES Example: 1. Buy now, pay later. 2. Please, lend me your ears. 06 Rhetorical Question Asking questions that make the audience think. A rhetorical question is asked to give effect or to put emphasis without the need for real answer. 06 Rhetorical Question Example: - Do you want to be a failure for the rest of your life? 07 LITERARY DEVICES Using simile, rhyme, alliteration, assonance, and other literary devices to build a cleaner image or picture for the reader; such words or phrases make ideas memorable. 07 LITERARY DEVICES Example: - Internet access that is as slow as a turtle. 08 GENERALIZATION These are broad sweeping statements which sound true at the time and are not immediately questioned for accuracy. 08 GENERALIZATION Example: - Every person in this room needs money. 09 PLAY ON THE AUDIENCE OR READERS SYMPATHY Making the audience or readers feel sorry for someone or something. 09 PLAY ON THE AUDIENCE OR READERS SYMPATHY Example: - Everyone feels sorry for destroying mother Earth. 10 CLUSTERS OF THREE Using two or more phrases or describing words to emphasize a point or an idea. 10 CLUSTERS OF THREE Example: - Buy Keso now! Cheesier, tastier, and creamier. 11 SUPERLATIVES Using words or phrases to highlight the superiority or exceptional qualities of a product or service compared to others in its category. 11 SUPERLATIVES Example: - The most reliable internet.
