Comedian seeks approval to convert
historic Colts Neck farm into sanctuary

BAY HEAD - Theres no funding for New Jersey

beach replenishment in President Barack Obamas
budget proposal, a fact that oceanfront homeowners
here say proves theyre right that money may not be
provided to protect their homes from future storms.
Many oceanfront property owners here are fighting against the states attempts to condemn their land
so that the Army Corps of Engineers can complete a
massive beach replenishment project from Manasquan to Barnegat inlets.
In a recent interview with NJ-101.5 radio. Rep.
Frank LoBiondo said there is no money for New Jersey beach replenishment in Obamas fiscal year 2017
budget. The federal fiscal year begins Oct. 1.
He said the states congressional delegation faces a
big challenge to acquire money for New Jersey
beaches. The delegation has been successful at securing beach replenishment funding in the past because
of the importance of the states beaches to New Jerseys $41 billion tourism industry.
LoBiondo represents the states 2nd Congressional
District, which includes parts of Ocean, Gloucester,
Camden and Burlington counties and all of Atlantic,
Cumberland, Salem and Cape May counties.
The Bay Head property owners say one of their
reasons for resisting the states condemnation plans
has been their belief that money may not be available

The grounds of Hockhockson Farm, a historic Colts Neck farm that comedian Jon Stewart (inset) wants to convert into an
animal sanctuary that will also practice sustainable agriculture and sell its produce.

COLTS NECK - Comedy giant Jon

Stewart wants to convert the historic
Hockhockson Farm on Route 537 into an
animal rehabilitation and agricultural
education center open for public tours.
His vision: 45 acres where animals
rescued from slaughterhouses, live markets and roadsides recuperate and feast
on farm-grown food. Residents will be
able to purchase seasonable vegetables
and learn about sustainable agriculture
and animal care through educational
programs.
The plans are before the Monmouth
County
Agriculture
Development
Board, which will decide tonight whether to grant Stewarts entity, the JTS Land
Trust, a commercial farm certification.
If approved, the JTS Land Trust will seek
approval from the Colts Neck Planning

Hockhockson Farm has been owned
by the same family for 200 years and includes one of the townships most historic homes. That home has sat on the same
foundation since its construction in the
1790s, according to the Colts Neck Preservation Committee. The farm also includes two cottages, a pool, pond, six
barns, an equine facility, a five-car garage, five pastures and five paddocks,
according to Zillow.com. It was listed for
sale last year for $4.75 million.
Robert Cooke III, who owns the farm,
declined to speak to a reporter Friday.
The property is used to board horses and
to farm vegetables and flowers.
