In the classroom, I skillfully meet the academic needs of a diverse student population by:

Implementing student-led, student-designed projects in the classroom to infuse rigor and

relevance into the curriculum
Successfully working on a team to extend a Spanish/English Immersion program that met the
needs of GT and second language learners alike (La Jolla Elementary School)
Differentiating lessons through flexible grouping and project based learning
Adapting curriculum to meet the needs of GT, second language learners, inclusion and
resource students
Utilizing diagnostic instruction in curriculum planning through anecdotal record keeping
during guided reading and math sessions
Utilizing portfolios and criterion-referenced testing as appropriate
Providing direct modeling, multi-sensory projects and activities (including sign language and
a class garden) and multi-response opportunities during lessons to address all learning
modalities
Implementing inquiry-based, cooperative group science experiments and math lessons

In addition, I successfully implement student-centered assessment and student- empowered,

positive discipline. Thus, I meet the social, emotional needs of learners by:

Presenting high and clear expectations for student achievement and behavior that conveys trust in
their abilities to achieve
Conveying trust and acceptance of the child when guiding student choice
Empowering students to reflect upon, set their own goals and take ownership for the outcomes
Incorporating student-led conferences that increase genuinely earned self-confidence through the
practice of eloquent speech
Implementing student-governed and student-empowered classroom management, positive
discipline, group agreements and individual student contracts, thus putting the ultimate
responsibility for the learning, the behavior and the classroom in their hands
Focusing on natural consequences to inappropriate behavior choices
Incorporating the Virtues Project into classroom management, calling them to practice the virtue
needed for each situation
Creating a counseling/thinking, cozy corner where students reflect on alternatives to inappropriate
behavior and record their reflections in a behavior log

I connect parent, school and community together to enhance learning by:

Nurturing parent involvement through a program celebrating the cultural heritage of each student
Coordinating Around the World Festivals, inviting members from the community, classroom
families and other classrooms to set up booths and provide presentations honoring the cultural and
religious heritage of each student
Routinely inviting parents and other community members to mentor students in the classroom
Successfully utilizing parent skills in the classroom through math tutoring, reading buddies, special
presentations, arts/crafts assistance, field trips and material resources
Contacting parents routinely with positive feedback regarding their children via telephone and home
visits

I collaborate to enrich the school community and provide innovative teaching solutions by:

Co-designing parent support circles and parent education classes (San Diego, CA)
Co-designing and running a summer camp to help students acclimate to a new school location
(San Diego, CA)
