(3) Lymphatics (1 mark): Lymph vessels of the intercostal space conform to the
general rule, that deep lymphatics follow arteries. Anteriorly drain into anterior
intercostal nodes that lie along the internal thoracic artery. Posterioly drain into
posterior intercostal nodes that lie in the posterior mediastinum
Applied Anatomy (2 mark): The intercostal spaces are important access points for:
(a) Surgical procedures, e.g. resection of (part of) the lung (b) Percussion and
auscultation of underlying structures e.g. heart & lung (c) To obtain a sample of
pleural fluid or drain pus/blood from the pleural cavity. The needle/drain is passed
through the intercostal space just above the upper border of the rib to avoid the
neurovascular bundle.
QUESTION (B) 2 MARKS:
Needle inserted at midaxillary line in 9 th intercostal space; inferior part of the
intercostal space to avoid the VAN and since in the left side avoids injury to the
heart (2 Marks).
