Wineology

INTELLIGENCE FOR THE WINE CONSUMER

BY LEN NAPOLITANO

Which wines are best for cooking?

Wine used in cooking loses much of its alcoholic strength as
it is heated, leaving the remaining wine components to marry
with those in the dish. The earlier in the cooking process wine
is added, the more alcohol evaporates. Therefore, a splash of
wine added near the end will retain more alcohol than a dose
added at the start.
A recipe could call for texture, added by wines acidity or
tannin, or be enhanced by a grapes primary flavors that remain
after alcohol evaporates. Part of the true varietal character of
a grape variety is its primary flavor profilepresent in every
wine made by that grape. Use the primary flavors in the
grapes below to support a recipe, either as similar-flavor or
contrasting-flavor components:
Chardonnay: green apple, pear, melon
Sauvignon Blanc: herbal, vegetal, citrus
Pinot Noir: red cherry, mushroom
Merlot: blackberry, plum
Zinfandel: blackberry
Cabernet Sauvignon: blackcurrant, cassis, bell pepper

PEACHY
CANYON
WINERY

If youre thinking of using fortified wines like genuine

Sherry, Port, Madeira and Marsala, be aware of their elevated
alcohol content and know that some are made sweet and some
are fully dry, so be sure you have the right style for your dish.
Also, if you substitute wine for water in a recipe, remember
to add cooking time to compensate for wines lower boiling
temperature; around 175F versus 212F for water.
Chefs who love wine as much as they love food believe any
wine good enough to drink on its own is good enough to use
in a recipe. You want a quality wine but it doesnt have to be
expensive. For less than $10, you can find many good wines
with style, flavor and depth. Put another way, if a wine does
not appeal to you as a drink, it wont as an ingredient, either.
Another bit of advice chefs give: dont use wines labeled as
cooking wine. These wines contain salt and do not have the
complexity of flavor needed in an ingredient as vital as wine.

Solvang Kicks Off Summer Concert Season with Midsommer Musik

The Third Wednesday
Third Wednesday Series, Free Concerts from 12 Noon to
12 Midnight, All Over Town.
June 15, Solvang will host the Midsommer Musik version
of their monthly Third Wednesday activities. The days
varied offerings will include deals at local merchants including
boutiques of all sorts, restaurants and gourmet food purveyors;
the weekly Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market; the popular
Solvang Third Wednesday Wine & Beer Walk; discounts at
local hotels; and free, live music from blues and soul, to folk/
Americana, to alt-pop and classic rock from 12 Noon to 12
Midnight, all over town.
Solvangs Midsommer Musik celebration will mark the
official start of the towns summer-long outdoor concert
series, with free shows scheduled for every Wednesday,
June 15 through August 17, at the Gazebo in Solvang Park
(Mission Drive and First Street). The Solvang Park summer
concerts will run from 5-8pm each Wednesday, and will
feature musical acts of varied genres as well as food vendors
throughout the summer season, to complete concert-goers
picnic plans.
During the special June 15 Midsommer Musik Solvang
Third Wednesday, musicians and bands stationed throughout
town will be playing back-to-back sessions, for a stream of daylong entertainment. The Gazebo in Solvang Park will see the
first free music performance from 12 Noon to 2pm, as blues
rock group the Mark Roberts Band, takes the stage. Guests
are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, and fully-outfitted
spreads including their favorite beverages for the picnicfriendly afternoon concert.
Additional, artists scheduled to perform on June 15 are
Danny & Mama K (blues/soul), playing 2-3pm in front of
The Book Loft (1680 Mission Drive); Los Spindleros (folk/
Americana), 3-4pm at Alisal & Copenhagen; Dewey Roberts
(rock/alt-pop), 4-5pm on the Serendipity Shoppe Porch
(Atterdag Square, 448 Atterdag Road); and, Blues Bob (blues),
4:30-5:30pm in Hamlet Square (Copenhagen & Second Street).
Solvang Park will once again serve as a food-focused picnic
stop starting at 5pm, where guests will enjoy the days main
concert event (5-8pm): classic rock band, The Caverns.
This Third Wednesday culminates with a Midsummers Eve
Traditional Danish Fire Ring ceremony along the lines of a
bonfire at 9pm, at the Copenhagen Sausage Garden (1660
Copenhagen Drive), where the fun runs through 12 Midnight
with a live band (band TBA).
An optimal way for Midsommer Musik revelers to catch
the multiple performers throughout the day, is to embark on
the afore-mentioned Solvang Third Wednesday Wine & Beer
Walk (3-7pm), a monthly, ticketed activity which entails two

Follow us on Twitter @WineCountryTW

wine or beer tastings at five venues of participants choice, a logo glass,

and a map to guide tasters to more than 15 crowd-pleasing Solvang
watering holes.

purchased on Solvang Third Wednesdays at Wandering Dog Wine Bar
(1539-C Mission Drive), the Olive House (1661 Mission Drive), and Sort
This Out Cellars (1636 Copenhagen Drive). On-line Third Wednesday
Wine & Beer Walk tickets may be purchased in advance, at solvangwednesday-wine-beer-walk.eventbrite.com.
Third Wednesday guests looking for a DIY activity, may partake in the
monthly jewelry-making class at Mies Beads (5-7pm; 1539-A Mission
Drive; 805-686-8804). For those seeking a curated mix of nature and
art, the Wildling Museum (1511-B Mission Drive) offers free admission

LUCAS &
LEWELLEN
VINEYARDS
Quality Begins in the Vineyards
With Lucas & Lewellen wines, its all about choice, diversity and
keeping it local. Between Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards tasting room, and its
sister tasting room, Toccata, guests can choose from a total of 42 different
wines crafted from 23 grape varieties, including one of the few Mthode
Champenoise style sparkling wines made on the Central Coast. All grapes
are grown on their 400 estate acres in Santa Barbara, incorporating three
distinct microclimates, all of which add up to an amazing mix of wine.
How does a winery make so many wines and make them well? Having a
third-generation grape grower who has farmed the region since the 1970s
helps. We hear time and again that what makes us unique is the consistent
quality we bring across a wide range of varieties, says Mike Lewellen,
director of business operations. This allows our guests to really explore
the best of Santa Barbara.

Winemaker Megan McGrath Gates

Lucas & Lewellen grapes are hand picked and sustainably grown in
their Santa Ynez Valley estate vineyards, and even their Winemaker, Megan
McGrath-Gates was educated locally and grew up in the Santa Ynez Valley.
But how did two friends end up creating one of the most iconic wineries in
Santa Barbara? Thats a question Im often asked, laughs former Superior
Court Judge, Royce Lewellen who performed the wedding ceremony for
Louis Lucasbefore the winery even existed! Louis told me over lunch
he was considering selling one or the other of his two vineyards, and I told
him I wasnt interested in buying a vineyard but Id buy a half interest in
the two vineyards if he would do the farming. By the end of that lunch,
Lucas & Lewellen Vineyards was born. Megan McGrath Gates, a Cal Poly
San Luis Obispo soils sciences graduate who earned her Certificate in
Winemaking from UC Davis, came on board as Winemaker in 2007one
of the few female winemakers along the Central Coast. I am extremely
fortunate to be a part of the Lucas & Lewellen team. It defines the best of
Santa Barbara County wine grape growing and winemaking. The qualities
that our wines are frequently recognized for begin in the vineyard with
Louis Lucas, she says.
They farm several different vineyards including Goodchild, High 9 and
the Old Adobe Vineyards in the Santa Maria Valley, located along the Foxen
Wine Trail. Home to mainly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the soils vary
from clay and gravel river deposits to hillside and hilltop sites reminiscent
of the great vineyards of Burgundy.

Wines with a Purpose

If you decide to purchase the NADIA Quattro, a
blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, Grenache,
and Petite Sirah, you will have a chance to drink a great
wine while doing something to benefit the community.
Laetitia donates a portion of the proceeds to local
charities. This year the beneficiaries are Habitat for
Humanity and Special Olympics.More than 8,000
bottles of NADIA Quattro will be available for purchase.
The NADIA Quattro is part of the Other Red
category, related to the Pinots and Cabernets, with a
little something different to offer. It is described as an
exotic blend, with four times the depth, that provides a
contrast to the traditional Meritages.
The History of Laetitias Wines
Grape vines where first planted at Laetitia in 1982
by French viticulturists. They recognized the ideal
growing conditions, which were similar to the founders
hometown in Epernay, France. The vineyard is located
in the Arroyo Grande AVA, on land overlooking the
Pacific Ocean.
In 2001, Selim Zikha, founder of a wind power
development company, bought the vineyard and
transformed the vineyard into the home of high quality,
and sustainably produced wines.

wines are single varietal. We also try to make wines no one else is making anymore such as our Bianchetta.

LINCOURT VINEYARDS
Casual Graciousness of Santa Barbara County
Founded in 1996 by Proprietor Bill Foley, Lincourt Vineyards
retains the rural charm and simplicity of an earlier era. Named
Lincourt after Foleys daughters, Lindsay and Courtney, the winery
produces benchmark wines from grapes grown in two estate
vineyards located in the cool Sta. Rita Hills as well as the warmer
Santa Ynez Valley. Lincourt is one of those rare wineries capable of
producing world-class bottlings from both Bordeaux and Burgundian
varieties while incorporating sustainable methods that have elevated
the winery to the upper echelon of Santa Barbara County.

Hand Crafted from Start to Finish

At Lincourt, the winery harvests fruit based on flavors, not
numbers. Utilizing small-lot fermentation and French oak barrels,
Winemaker Lorna Kreutz is involved in every step of the process.
The wines produced are 100% Santa Barbara County, with estate
vineyards in Santa Ynez and the Sta. Rita Hills, including Alamo
Pintado (Sauvignon Blanc), La Cuesta (Cabernet, Merlot), and
Rancho Santa Rosa (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Syrah). The soils are
maritime-based and the weather is consistently cool, creating rich
silky wines thanks to ocean breezes.

Wine and Food Pairings Perfect for Summer

No meal would be complete without Lincourts award winning
wine. Wine member favorites include the Rancho Santa Rosa
20

Chardonnay, with notes of tangerine, spices, and fresh citrus zest.

Bright and balanced, the wine is a classic example of a Sta. Rita
Hills Chardonnay. The 2014 Rancho Santa Rosa Pinot Noir is
another favorite, exhibiting aromas of bright boysenberry fruit and
black pepper. The combination of dark plum and cran-raspberry
flavors with sweet tobacco leaf and black pepper make this the
perfect wine to pair with your favorite grilled pork or steak this
summer.

Sip and Play this Summer

Once a dairy property, the warm and cozy winery is located
along Alamo Pintado Road in Solvang, nestled under California
pepper trees with sweeping views of the vineyard. Retaining its
rural charm, the old farmhouse serves as Lincourts tasting room, an
original 1926 Sears Craftsman home. While youre there, enjoy an
outdoor picnic lunch set amongst the estate vineyards or taste the
wines on the veranda. The winery offers the perfect spot to spend a
leisurely day in the Valley, offering picturesque charm on 30 acres.
This summer, dont miss the concert series Hip Sips every
Sunday from May 29th - October 30th featuring live music, a food
truck every second Sunday of the month, and yard games. Also
this summer is the annual Pork and Pinot Event on July 17th. Call
the tasting room for more event details or visit the website.

As one of the oldest producing wineries in California, San Antonio Winery was built
upon tradition, with four generations of the Riboli family involved in the art of traditional
winemaking.
The family has been buying grapes from Paso Robles since the 1980s, but they decided
to open a tasting room in 2008, bringing their award-winning wines to the Central Coast.
In the last five years, the winery has developed their properties across Paso with three
vineyards in the El Pomar AVA and one in the Creston AVA.
These new up-and-coming areas offer unique soils and a strong cooling influence from
the Templeton Gap.
I love the whole winemaking process. Mother Nature does not make it easy, thats the
challenge but where the passion is, said Anthony Riboli. Every year is different but we
always strive to keep our wines consistent.

Four Generations of Excellence

Anthony Riboli is the first member of the fourth generation to join the family business,
overseeing all of the winemaking and grape growing. Since his first harvest in 1997, he
knew there was opportunity to bring a new perspective to winemaking. With a masters
degree in viticulture from UC Davis, Riboli has worked hard to make San Antonio

Winery the most awarded winery in Southern California.

My grandparents still come in every day, they are very much a part
of the process, said Riboli. I love being able to share what we are
doing, what is newthey are very supportive.

Estate Grown in Paso Robles

With the opening of their new winery in Fall 2016, all grapes will
be under one roof, further illuminating the potential to grow stunning
varieties in the Paso AVA. With Cabernet Sauvignon continuing to gain
prominence in Paso Robles (and unique Bordeaux blends), the winery
will continue to offer award-winning wines at a fair price.
Paso Robles is a really unique area, with great wine quality and
value, said Riboli. The area is undergoing a revolution and continues
to grow in popularity.

Central Coast Portfolio

The winery has several leading brands from Paso Robles and
Monterey. The Maddalena series, named after Anthonys grandmother
Maddalena and daughter Alena, is inspired by their Italian heritage. The
2014 Muscat Canelli is a tradition in their family, a rare wine with very
few plantings in California. The wine offers aromas of orange peel and
honeysuckle, sweet and crisp with flavors of apricot and lychee.
San Simeon brand is another bestseller. Experience the 2012
Cabernet Sauvignon, a brilliant wine under $30 offering bright aromas
of raspberry and black cherry. Adding a small percentage of Petit Verdot
for complexity, the wine offers ripe flavors of spicy plum and currant.
Opaque brand produces big dark wines out of Paso Robles. The
2013 Opaque Zinfandel, impenetrable to light, refers to the dark,
inky color of the familys Zinfandel. Originally from Croatia, the
varietal reveals ripe flavors of blackberry, boysenberry, and black
cherry with accents of spice and dark cocoa.
Im really loving our Opaque Zinfandel, with bright raspberry and
blackberry notes, said Riboli. To me its an ideal Zinfandel, bright dark
fruit, without the high alcohol sweetness of Port.

Tasting Room Offerings

Located right off the 46 in Paso Robles, the winery invites guests to
experience the charm of their newly remodeled tasting room and gift
boutique. The winery offers a collection of foreign and domestic wines,
as well as a newly opened bistro with artisan pizzas and pastas.
We have something for everyone, said Riboli. We want to make wine
less intimidating, we want the customer to have fun. >> RACHEL HOMMEL

San Antonio Winery... Proud to Announce

San Antonio Winery, established in 1917 and founding winery of
Riboli Family Wine Estates, is proud to announce that Ben Mayo has
joined their winemaking team in Paso Robles.
Raised in San Luis Obispo and boasting more than 15 years of
winemaking experience in Paso Robles, Mayo joins the San Antonio
winemaking team focusing predominantly on the San Simeon,
Maddalena, and Opaque brands of the Riboli Family Wine Estates
portfolio. Mayo will also be heavily involved in the construction and
management of the new state-of-the-art winery on Wisteria Lane
off Golden Hill Road, opening in the summer of 2016.
Most recently, Mayo was the winemaker and general manager at Rotta
Winery. Previously, he spent 14 years as winemaker and partner at
Eberle Winery. Both are located in the Paso Robles AVA.
Our family has been committed to Paso Robles since the early
1980s, and we work tirelessly to continue to innovate both in the
vineyards and the winery with each vintage, as well as to provide a
truly unmatched experience for those who visit our tasting room,
said fourth-generation family Winemaker, Anthony Riboli. By joining our team, Ben will help us to exceed these goals. We couldnt
be happier.
Mayo says what drew him to San Antonio is the familys vision and
passion for the Central Coast and the opportunity to lead boutique
vineyard-driven brands that showcase the very best vineyards in
Paso Robles and Monterey. The family farms eight estate vineyards
in the following AVAs: El Pomar, Creston, Santa Lucia Highlands,
and Arroyo Seco.
As a fourth-generation family having produced wine for almost 100
years, they are dedicated to constantly evolving as a company and are
completely invested in the Central Coast, said Mayo.
Ben, whose parents still live in San Luis Obispo, currently resides in
Paso Robles with his wife and two children.

located on both west and east sides of the Paso Robles wine growing appellation.

Executive Chef Santos MacDonal is a firm believer in using fresh,

locally sourced ingredients. He visits the Central Coast farmers
markets so often, looking for inspiration for the weeks menu, that he
is well known to most of the purveyors.
Prior to moving to Paso Robles and opening Il Cortile with his
wife and managing partner, Carole MacDonal, Chef Santos worked in
several highly acclaimed restaurants in Southern California, including
Giorgio, Locando de Lago and LAngolo Caf. His passion for fresh
ingredients, creative drive and culinary talents are all reflected in Il
Cortiles menu, which changes seasonally and offers inspirations as
specials. Every item, including the pasta, is made in-house with Chef
Santos personally overseeing every dish that leaves the kitchen.
Although the menu changes often, there are a few dishes that
remain due to their popularity. Grilled octopus with fresh vegetables
marinati leads an impressive list of antipasti; homemade pappadelle
with wild boar ragu is a favorite for many regulars, as is the pan seared
venison medallions in a red wine sauce. For a sweet ending, there is
nothing like the panna cotta.
The intimate dining room and cozy courtyard are the perfect setting
for a special dinner or romantic evening out. Impeccable service
and an impressive wine list paired with Chef Santos creations have
garnered Il Cortile a reputation as one of the top culinary destinations
in Paso Robles. Locals and wine country visitors anxiously wait to hear
the evenings specials each visit.

SLO. No one is in any hurry in the

Strangers are genuinely friendly, always

combination of good stuff that makes
visiting here so nourishing to the soul.
San Luis Obispos unusual natural

area in the 1700s. In 1772 they built

San Luis Obispo Wine Country: Six Themed Tasting Trails

San Luis Obispo (SLO) Wine Country
on Californias Central Coast may be a small
oceanfront region, but the wine tasting
possibilities are almost limitlessas evidenced by
the six themed tasting trails.
Visitors can build local itineraries around a
range of lifestyles and wine styles, from urban
tasting rooms to beachfront wine tasting. The
trails are highlighted in the new SLO Wine
Country tasting maps, as well as at www.
SLOWine.com.
SLO Wine Country is an intimate coastal
region with less than 30 wineries, but theres also
a ton of diversity here, too, said Heather Muran,
executive director of SLO Wine Country. These
wine trails really showcase all that we have to
offer, and they enable you to follow your personal
tastes and timeline as you tour the region.

Good to Know Before

Heading to the Wineries
BY CHARLES NEAVE
For the most part, going wine
tasting is about the easiest thing in
the world, especially in California
where wineries and tasting rooms
abound. Mostly, wine tasting is a
matter of doing a little research and
planning your day. Here are some
tips that have proven to be helpful
and are designed to help make the
sensory adventure of wine tasting
all the more enjoyable.
Before you start off, pack a few
essentials. Water (plenty of
water) and something to snack
oncrackers or a baguette.
Many wineries have picnic areas
and there are plenty of delis and
bakeries that can make up a lunch
for you, or make your own.
Be sure to nibble during the day and
make time for lunch. Two tips: drink
at least twice as much water as
you do wine, and remember that
you dont have to drink everything
poured into your glass.
Dont be afraid to ask questions.
Time again I have heard
knowledgeable winery workers
say that there is no such thing as
a stupid question, and they mean
that.
You can drink what you want, in the
order you want. If you like reds, say
so; if you dont like sweet wines,
speak up. But the idea of starting
with whites, then going on to reds
and then sweet wines is a good
guide.
If there is a particular wine you want
to try and it is not on the list, ask. Most
tasting rooms are happy to pour a
little if you show enthusiasm.
Look for tasting rooms in towns.
Many of these are cooperative
tasting rooms, where in one place
you might find wines from a
dozen or more small-to-medium
premium producers.

L AMONTAGNE WINERY
Pinot with Personality
A visit to LaMontagne winery in the Lompoc Wine Ghetto will stimulate your senses
in many different ways! Kimberly Smith, owner and winemaker, will greet you with a
huge, effusive smile, her raucous laughter, and take you step by step through her love
of wine and the enticing line up of award winning wines she crafts for her wine loving
fans. Each bottle is reflective of Kimberlys unique geographical tongue, relying on her
unique sense of taste and smell, to craft her wines every step of the way from vineyard
to bottle. Her success is evident by the annual succession of awards LaMontagne wines
have received since the initial release in 2010. Each bottle has a personality of its own,
and its one you are certain to enjoy and appreciate.

Passion and Perfection Driven

A foodie and wine lover, Kimberly will tell you she would purchase ($50) bottles
of wine, and pour them down the drain; they were not exciting and possessed no
personality. Following serious health issues, in 2006 she started taking classes at
Alan Hancock College, and was fortunate to meet Wes Hagen of Clos Pepe. Hagen
mentored Kimberly for three years, encouraging her to make her own wine. The
initial Pinot Noir, a 2010 Theron spent 18 months in barrel being released in mid2012. This first release won Double Gold at Affairs of the Vine, Pinot Shoot Out.
The path was set for this never intended to be a winemaker passionate woman, and
she has never looked back.

Tasting: The LaMontagne Way

Kimberly is not only passionate about the wine she produces, she is also a purist.
Avoiding blending, she crafts only single vineyard, single clone wines reflecting the
terroir the grape comes from. As Kimberly says, the wines are ready to bottle when
they sing. You will experience these singing wines when you visit the tasting room.
To display the character of the wine, each wine tasting experience is complemented
with a small charcuterie and gourmet bread plate. Although the focus is on Pinot
Noir, depending on the time of year and availability, you may be fortunate enough to
taste a Rose, a crisp Chardonnay, Grenache, Syrah or Tempranillo. You will taste 5-7
wines and be treated to Kimberlys passion.

The Wine Club Family

Everyone entering the tasting room instantly becomes part of the family; joining
the wine club you cement your relationship, guaranteeing yourself an ongoing
supply of these small lot production gems. There are different shipment options
to choose from, but the most unique factor is that YOU pick the wine YOU want
in the shipment. In addition to free tastings and access to newly released vintages,
Kimberly puts on two blow out parties each year for club members, opening up
her home. Each January she hosts a Paella and Pinot event, and in August is the
annual Pork n Pinot event, which features a pig roast paired with award winning
Pinots. Kimberly describes Pork N Pinot as hedonism at its best. Sign up for
the wine club NOW so you dont miss this upcoming happening on August 20th.
LaMontagne wines are mostly available only through the tasting room and wine club.
Due to the small production of these premium wines, the wine club is approaching
full capacity.

Sinor-LaVallee
A Story of Terroir
Sinor-LaVallee, founded in 1997 by Mike Sinor and Cheri
LaVallee-Sinor, is a chapter in an adventure which began when they
met while attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. What started out
as college jobs at local wineries, soon became their passion as they
became more immersed in the craft of winemaking and studying
the art of Pinot Noir. This led to travels abroad, where the couple
not only married in France, but continued their appreciation of the
magnificent terroir of Burgundy and its acclaimed wines. Known
for his determination and enthusiasm, Sinor is recognized as one of
the Central Coasts most highly rated and recognized winemakers
and the recipient of the acclaimed Winemaker of the Year award
for San Luis Obispo County in 2012. Self-taught in the craft of
winemaking, Sinor is winemaker who truly believes great wines
begin in the vineyard.

Bassi Vineyard
Throughout the years Sinor-LaVallee has sourced fruit from
many acclaimed vineyards such as Talley-Rincon, Byron and
Aubaine properties. With the commencement of vintage 2013,
all of the winerys offerings are derived from the estates Bassi
Vineyard. With its close proximity of 1.2 miles from the Pacific
Ocean, the Bassi Vineyard in Avila Valley is paradisiacal. A hilltop
seascape of San Luis Bay to the west welcomes the morning
coastal fog as it casts its maritime influence, combined with
oceanic soils to tell a story of the land -- rich in history, with
viticulture influences which result in complex wines that intrigue
and delight with their layers of aromas and taste, inviting you to
discover more. Organically farmed with biodynamic inputs, the
Bassi Vineyards plantings of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Albario,
Syrah and the iconic Pinot Noir, have limited yields lending to a
natural intensity that is a true expression of the location. Sinor

feels that Our wines naturally reflect their pronounced coastal

terroir, as well as the impassioned viticulture handwork that we
bring to our vines and soils. The effect of these elements is highly
local and personalthe hallmarks of Sinor-LaVallee. Our focus
is in learning the story (Terroir)of our Estate vineyard and telling
that story through our wines. The message is the vineyard; the
messenger is the wine.

Tasting Room
The Sinor-LaVallee Tasting Room is located in picturesque
Avila Beach, a short one block from the beach. With its sunny
location and panoramic view, the tasting room is the perfect
sojourn for wine enthusiasts. An impressive selection of wines
by-the-glass or a $10 Tasting Flight of the winerys White label,
Black (Reserve) label and SLO Estate series are available, along
with a limited quantity of library selections. Wines include a
Chardonnay, Albario, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Syrah and Cuvee.
Sinor-LaVallee is located at 550 1st Street, Avila Beach. The
tasting room is open ThursdayMonday 12-6pm, with extended
hours in the summer. You may call (805) 459-9595, email: www.

Wine Tasting in Santa Barbara County

38

A Spirit and Passion for Winemaking

O

n the southern end of the Central Coast appellation, lies Santa Barbara Countys historic
wine growing region. The first vineyard production in these rolling coastal hills dates back to
1782, when Junipero Serra planted vines on Mission land. About a hundred years later, there
was 260 acres of luscious vineyards and seventeen winemakers in Santa Barbara County. Sadly,
the Prohibition Era destroyed many of these historic vineyard sites and mostly put an end to
winemaking in the regionas was the case in many of the beautiful winegrowing regions across
the state. With that being said, the spirit and passion for winemaking never left Santa Barbara
County, and this wine growing region is alive and well today. Talented winemakers are producing
outstanding and pure terroir driven wines from the five American Viticultural Areas (AVAs), planted
mostly to Burgundian, Rhne and Bordeaux grape varieties.
Although the movie Sideways is said to have put San Barbara Countys wine growing region on
the map in 2004, especially the Santa Maria Valley AVA, it is the high quality of the wine across
the county that has continued to uphold this bountiful regions reputation. Sprawling vineyards
and gently rolling hills create a picturesque scene for visitors and locals alike, who visit the many
wineries, tasting rooms and wine bars in the area. In the five AVAs, wine tasters will find a nice
range of wine styles amongst the Burgundian, Rhone and Bordeaux varietals that are produced.
In the more northern region, cool climate Burgundian varietals reign, such as Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay, due to the maritime influence. This ensures a long temperate growing season which
the Burgundian varietals crave. With ample amount of sunlight, the grapes ripen very slowly
perfect for producing terroir driven wines with pure varietal characteristics. In the southern region,
there is more of a diurnal shift with warmer nights and cooler days. This area sees less fog and has
different soil types than what is found closer to the coast. The Bordeaux and Rhine varieties flourish
in this warmer climate and the sandy soils with limestone and chalk impart a wonderfully desirable
minerality in the wines.
The wineries in Santa Barbara County boast a concentration of incredibly passionate and talented
winemakers; join them year round at their many events, celebrations and festivals, as well as in
their tasting rooms.

A single bottle contains:

750 ml of wine which is 25.6 ounces

made from about 2.4 pounds of
grapes (39 oz.) and is enough for
four or maybe five glasses.

One standard oak barrel of wine

holds: 295 bottles of wine (or 59 gallons) made from 740 pounds of grapes
which works out to almost but not
precisely - 24 cases of wine.

A Walk Around Tasting is

a combination of a tour and a
tasting. Your host brings along
several bottles of wine on your
tour, and may take you to a
garden area of the winery to pour
the first round. Then you move to
another place within the winery
to sample the next wine. This
experience continues until all the
wines are tasted.

Barrel Tasting

Follow us on Twitter @WineCountryTW

A Sit Down Tasting usually

requires an appointment, and
there may be a slightly higher
fee than a wine bar fee. Seated in
an elegant room, you are poured
several wines by your winery
host. Expect your host to describe
the unique characteristics of each
wine and how it was made.

Walk Around Tasting

The most common tasting

experience is a Wine Bar Tasting.
You step up to the bar where
typically a list of wines being
poured is displayed. Expect to
pay a tasting fee between $10$40. Some tasting bars will offer
you the option to taste a library
or reserve wine. Exercising this
option increases the fee, but will
allow you to taste very unique,
old or rare wines.

Another popular tasting

experience that can be part of a
tour or a Walk Around is a Barrel
Tasting. Your guide takes a wine
thief, a special siphon placed
into a hole in the top of a barrel
to extract tasting samples of a
maturing wine. The sample allows
you to taste what the wine is like
in the middle of developing its
full potential.
Why make an appointment?
Some wineries are so small
that they need to know when you
are coming so someone will be
there to greet you. Others have
sit-down tastings that start and
end at specific times. Its always
a good idea to schedule your
appointments well in advance.

Bell Street Farm is an acclaimed eatery and market in the heart

of wine country in historic Los Alamos. A must-see destination
for residents and visitors alike, the country chic setting offers a
warm and inviting atmosphere to enjoy a meal, snack, regional
beers or to sample local wines.
I work with local artisans, food purveyors, winemakers and
farmers to create a distinct dining and retail experience at Bell Street
Farm, says Jamie Gluck, owner of Bell Street Farm. The space is
an expression of my lifelong passion for fine foods and we use only
the freshest ingredients found along the California Coast.
The eatery was designed in 2011 and reflects elements found
from the original 1916 building with a modern charm. Gluck
scoured the area to find materials and design elements that would
work with the design. He works with California artisans and
manufacturers to create Bell Street Farm pottery (Los Alamos
ceramicist Ramona Clayton), hand moisturizer and soap (custom
blends from California Baby Organics), extra virgin olive oil and
red wine vinegar, granola, chicken rub (house-made) and many
other select products.
Listed by Yelp as #28 among the countrys Top 100 restaurants,
Bell Street Farms menu offerings include sandwiches with locally
made breads and California cheeses, farm fresh salads with
vegetables and greens from local farms, renowned crispy houseroasted porchetta, rotisserie Red Bird Farm chicken, unique salads
and house-made cookies, pots de creme, sweets and coffee drinks.
All retail offerings are carefully selected to reflect the local area
experience and include picnic baskets, table cloths, candles and
more. Bell Street Farm also offers custom-designed picnic baskets
for groups of two to 200 and holds 3rd Saturdays suppers and
custom dinners and parties, both on-site and at unique locations.
Located by the distinctive flagpole in the heart of Los Alamos,
Bell Street Farm is just 45 minutes north of Santa Barbara and 75
miles from Paso Robles. The eatery and market is open Thursday
11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. and Monday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Contact Jamie
Gluck at (805) 344-4609 or jamie@bellstreetfarm.com to inquire

A family run operation, Frequency Wines produces Santa Barbara

FIGUEROA MTN

Located in the Santa Ynez countryside across from brander Winery

(near Los Olivos), Rancho Olivos is the only place in the Santa Ynez
Valley where you can taste their olive oil right where the olives are
grown. Owners Shannon Casey and John Copeland planted several
acres in 2000, to be able to produce and sell fresh extra virgin olive oil.
Feburary is a great time to visit the farm, where this years oils are
just being released. There is complimentary sampling of all of their
extra virgin olive oils, including their Italian and Arbequina oils, extra
virgin olive oils, plus several delicious flavors.
Fresh local olive oil does not only taste fabulous, but it is also a
wonderful heart-healthy fat. Consuming fresh olive oil will help lower
your bad cholesterol and boost your good cholesterol, and help to keep
those arteries from accumulating plaque. And, you can do it while
enjoying a delicious gourmet condiment!
Because local olive oil has so much more flavor than supermarket
oil, Shannon loves these fresh oils in salads and other dishes.
Right now I am enjoying the Italian EVOO on baby lettuce with
avocado and a drizzle of our balsamic vinegar, with a sprinkle of sea
salt. So easy and quick to prepare.
Shannon has also been experimenting with olive oil crackers. Use

2 cups of flour, 1/3 cup of olive oil, cup of water and 2 teaspoons of
salt. The dough comes together quickly and is easy to handle. I shape
it into eight balls and roll it out thinly bakes quickly in a 400 oven.
Shannon also adds pepper or finely chopped rosemary to change up
the flavors. Look for the recipe on the Rancho Olivos website.
To get the health benefits of olive oil, Shannon feels you should
really seek out fresh local oil which will contain the polyphenols which
are the compounds that help arteries stay plaque free plus the flavor
is amazing!
Enjoy the complimentary tastings at the farm, which is open daily
from noon to 4:00 p.m., and from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Friday
through Sunday. Visitors can also enjoy playing with the dogs, who
always appreciate folks stopping by.

Toretti Family Vineyard
Wine and Family are Synonymous
Its About Family
As you step into this inviting, warm tasting room on a side
street in Los Olivos, you will immediately feel comfortable and
welcome, as if stepping into your best friends living room. This
isnt just a tasting room, its the familys lounge, where they
welcome you with smiles, friendship and of course, exceptional
hand crafted, boutique award winning wines.
The name itself, Toretti, is indicative of the family philosophy:
Bringing family and friends together. Toretti is a blend of the name
of ex-restauranteur turned vineyard farmer turned winemaker,
Bob Torres, and his wifes maiden name, Maretti. As the names are
blended, so are the personalities, which are reflective in the wines.
The Maretti family of Swiss/Italian descent, blended with the
Torres family of Mexican descent. The passion and spirit of these
personalities is apparent as you begin your tasting journey.

label was launched in 2007. To this day Toretti maintains small

production, focusing primarily on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The
winery continues to be family owned and operated, focusing on
small release hand crafted wines. Totally involved, Bob Torres, now
88, comes in most weekends at about 2:30. Come to the Toretti
Tasting room, sit, relax and enjoy the music while you sip elegant
Pinots and Chardonnays, while chatting with Bob Toretti, who will
mesmerize you with stories, and the history of the Toretti Family
Vineyard, of which you will now be a part.
The tasting room is open: Thurs.-Mon. 12:30pm-5:30pm, 2933 San
Marco, Suite 101, Los Olivos, (805) 688-8002, www.toretti.com.

Sip, Savor, Enjoy and Laugh

Entering the tasting room Milena Hernandez, Bob Torres
daughter, will most likely greet you. Her warmth, laughter and
sparkling eyes will immediately impart a feeling that you have
entered a special place, which you have. Sit in the lounge area
surrounded by musical instruments, or stand at the bar to begin
your tasting journey. As Milena pours award winning Toretti wines
for you, she will entertain you with vignettes of her father and
mother, their heritage and of course, the wines. Currently there are
5 wines on the tasting menu, including two newly released Pinot
Noirs: 2014 Inocencio, named for Milenas Mexican grandfather,
and the 2014 Valentino, named for her Swiss grandfather.

Handcrafted Delights from
Staffords Famous Chocolates
Behind the counter at Staffords Famous Chocolates, the shop
hums with the steady work of chocolate making. Youll find no
conveyor belts or massive machines churning out truffles though.
Peoplechocolatierscraft each piece one by one, hand crafting

a red wine truffle, an old fashioned pecan turtle or something
truly spectacular, like the Ooey Gooey Bar, a combination of
marshmallow, peanut butter and caramel dipped in chocolate,
topped with nuts.

Jalama Wines produces small lots, with a focus on vineyard
designated wines. When you have one of these, youll know it is
something special and unique.

Zotovich Estate Vineyard &

Winery may be a small, familyrun entity, but its handcrafted
wines produce big results. Wine
critic Antonio Galloni gave both
Zotovichs 2013 Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay 93 points, with the
2013 Syrah receiving a 95.
The road to success wasnt easy
however. Steve Zotovich said that
he didnt walk into a ready-made
and profitable vineyard. When
he first bought the vineyard in
2004, it needed a lot of work.
The weeds in the vineyard were taller than the vines, he said. He removed a grove of
eucalyptus, and made many other improvements. We started out grassroots to get to
where we are today, Zotovich said.
He credits his winemaking team, now headed by Dan Schuler-Jones with
emphasizing the production of serious wines. The current winemaking focuses on
showcasing the incredible quality of the grapes from Zotovich Vineyard and constantly
striving for excellence . Ratings by reviewers like Stephen Tanzer, Robert Parker and
Antonio Galloni show that critics as well as consumers find their varietals noteworthy.
Zotovichs tasting room is distinctive as well. It is located directly across from the
Lompoc Wine Ghetto in the Santa Rita Hills Wine Center. While the word ghetto
is usually associated with negative connotations, wine connoisseurs know that this
industrial section of the city is a hidden gem. Visitors can try wines from different
vineyards without getting in their car.
The Zotovich tasting room is located at 300 North 12th Street, Suite 1D, Lompoc. The
tasting room is open Friday-Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., or by appointment. For
more information, call (805) 736-1600 or email info@zotovichvineyards.com.

Brent has a deep-rooted history in the wine industry, having

managed farming operations for his familys vineyards for 23 years.
Brents first foray into vineyard management came in 1989, when
his family purchased a vineyard in Calistoga, California, that would
become the original Melville Vineyards. Brent worked grape
harvests in that vineyard from 1989 through 1995, moving on to
the familys new vineyard purchase, 40 acres in Lompoc, which
they acquired in 1996. In 1997, the family bought an adjacent,
55-acre parcel of land, now the existing Melville Vineyards and
Winery, in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA.
Brent continued to manage the vineyard operations for Lompocs
Melville Vineyards through 2013, when he decided to venture out
on his own. Using fruit farmed from the 100-acre Vernas Vineyard,
located in Los Alamos, in the Santa Barbara County Appellation, he
launched Lucky Dogg Winery.
Brents farming and winemaking mantra is all about balance.
He refers to his grape-selecting methods as holistic, with an
end goal of producing wines that represent the grapes origins in
reference to both the physical traits of the respective terroir and
their original, positive energy and all-around good vibes.
Brents winemaking philosophy revolves around the notion
that perfect fruit will require little-to-no manipulation in the
winemaking process and to this end, Brents Lucky Dogg wines are

of the distinctive flavors found in Lodi grapes. Their wine lounge features wine flights, wine by the glass, cheese
plates and other small bites. Visit for tastings and tours, or call to schedule a private event or tasting by appointment. Taste their wines, meet the winemaker and have a special day of wine tasting.
