Roller Disco Rolls Into Rockaway

By Katie McFadden

Grab your skates and get into

the groove. Lola Stars Dreamland Roller Disco parties have
come to Rockaway!
From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday nights all summer long,
all are welcome to join in the
roller disco magic at the Beach
108th hockey rink. Lola Star gave
a taste of roller disco last Saturday to test the waters and now
the party officially kicks off this
Saturday, July 2. Guests are welcome to bring their own skates
or rollerblades and skate for free
or skates are available to rent for
$8. Just look out for the big rainbow unicorn Dreamland Roller
Disco party mobile (aka Starla)
and you know youre in the right
spot.
Star has had roller disco
dreams since she was a kid.
When I was seven years old
I would roller skate to Barry
Manilows Copacabana in my
parents basement and I had
dreams of being a roller disco
superstar and now Im living

out my fantasy around New

York City by bringing that same
feeling of roller disco magic
while playing dress-up in my
basement to now here in reality, Star said.
Star first brought roller disco
to New York City in 2008 when
she opened a rink in the Childs
Building in Coney Island, with
the help of a contest sponsored
by Glamour Magazine and
Tommy Hilfiger, which served
to make someones dreams
come true. The rink lasted for
two years until the Childs Building needed to be shut down
for much-needed renovations.
Dreamland Roller Disco took
a hiatus until Star found a new
home at Lakeside in Prospect
Park. The glitzy, fabulous parties have been held there on
Friday nights for the past three
summers. Now the magic has
come to Rockaway.
Before even opening her
Beach 116th Street gift shop,
Star set her eyes on the Beach
108th hockey rink as a potential roller disco paradise. I fell

in love with that rink as soon as

I discovered it. I was filled with
this vision of what it could be
and I had to make it happen,
Star said. It took a long time for
the dream to become a reality as
Star was faced with many obstacles including a renovation of
the rink last year, permit issues,
insurance and trying to solve
the problem of how to trans-

port skates to and from the rink,

which is how she came up with
the idea for a mobile skate party
truck. With the truck I can do
pop-up parties around the city
and possibly go on tour around
the country, she said. Adding
on to the obstacles, the truck
had a shaky start as it broke

Happy 4th
Its 4th of July weekend and I
bet you thought I was going to
declare summer over. I actually did that around Easter this
year.
Summer ends earlier
every year because every year
theres so much to do. Theres
logic in there somewhere.
Anyway, its 4th of July weekend and Im reminded how
much America is like family:
maddening, crazy, amazing,
and necessary. Add your own
adjective, chances are itll fit.
For those of you who dont
know how you could possibly be related to that brother
or sister, aunt or uncle, who
drives you nuts I feel the
same way about some of our
fellow Americans. I suspect
some of you like your family
just fine but you dont want to
live next door to them. A lot

of people feel the same way

about a lot of people. Thats
America.
Fireworks are great on the
4th of July but I dont feel so
patriotic about people who set
them off past midnight in the
middle of the week. Who are
these knuckleheads? Theyre
not even the kind of fireworks
that look good. Theyre just
the big boom type. I gotta ask
again who are these knuckleheads? But theyre family.
Theyre Americans, right?
I remember watching a
40-year-old man setting off a
mat of firecrackers in the street.
I think thats like 4000 firecrackers. I wonder if he was thinking
about Thomas Jefferson and
Ben Franklin. Is this guy celebrating the birth of the United
States or is he just a moron of
monumental proportions?
Which, of course, reminds
me of a George Carlin quote.
Think about how dumb the
average American is, then re-

alize that half of them are stupider than that.

Which, of course reminds
me how much I like quotable quotes though no one
seems to say anything anymore. Pretty much all of
the good stuff has been said
already by, or at least attributed to, Yogi Berra, Mark
Twain, Winston Churchill,
and Bugs Bunny. But I did
come across a few goodies
from others that seem timely
with The Fourth.
Stephen Colbert suggested
America should steer clear of
foreign affairs. If our Founding Fathers wanted us to care
about the rest of the world,
they wouldnt have declared
their independence from it.
Newsman Dan Rather has
found himself in controversy from time to time but not
when he said: Americans will
put up with anything provided it doesnt block traffic.
George Carlin was no doubt

thinking about average Americans when he said: In America, anyone can become President. Thats the problem.
Lily Tomlin kinda zeroed in
on the same problem: Ninetyeight percent of the people in
this country are decent, hardworking, honest people. Its
the lousy other two percent
that get all the publicity. But
then, we elected them.
Its kind of easy to find
zingers about America because sometimes we can
be a big oaf. Like the guy
said, America will always do
the right thing after trying
everything else but we do get
there.
So on this birthday weekend
of the United States of America its time to remember
another quote from a famous
billionaire: For 240 years it's
been a terrible mistake to bet
against America, and now is
no time to start. Warren Buffett

Everyone Knows Its Name

OWEN BAXTER TO OPEN THE IRISH CIRCLE
By Katie McFadden

The Irish Circle is coming

back. It has a new location. It
has a new owner. But the namesake of the longtime Rockaway
landmark will live on in its new
home, when it opens this holiday weekend.
The new, new Irish Circle, located at 112-16 Rockaway Beach
Boulevard, is expected to open at
6 p.m. on Friday, July 1. The name
is being carried on by Owen Baxter, former owner the Beautiful
Palm Gardens, which was located
just a few blocks up the boulevard. The location was the prior
home of King of Tacos. When the
spot became available, Baxter
saw it as a sign. It is right smack
in the middle of Beverly Baxter Boulevard, which runs from
Beach 108th to Beach 116th Street
and is named after his late wife.
Baxter says Beverly, who was
a Rockaway icon for her heavy
involvement in several local or-

ganizations, loved the old Irish

Circle, located on Beach 102nd
Street. Beverly passed away in
2009 and the Boulevard was
named in her memory in 2010.
She loved the Irish Circle and
Irish music. What are the chances
that this place would be available
right in the middle of her boulevard? I think she got together up
there with Woods (once an own-

er of the original Irish Circle) and

they planned this, Baxter said.
Baxter says he also wanted to
bring back the name, since the
Irish Circle on Beach 102nd was
an unofficial Rockaway landmark. The old Irish Circle closed
in May 2014 and reopened as the
Community House in August
2015. Why not bring the name
back? It was a landmark and its
a name thats known all over the
peninsula. Everyone knows the
Irish Circle, Baxter said.
The new Irish Circle will be
a venue for good food, drinks
and entertainment, Baxter said.
The kitchen wont be open right
away, but a full bar with beer,
wine and liquor will. When the
kitchen opens, there will be a
simple menu with chicken, steak
and fish dishes, along with burgers. There will also be live music,
starting this weekend. The bar
opens at 6 p.m. and live music
will start at 8 p.m. On Friday, July
1, Irish folk band, The Black Vel-

vet Band featuring Jimmy Walsh

and Jimmy Lavin will play. There
will also be musical appearances by Gerry Hughes, who owns
Connolly Station in Malverne
and a performance by Owen
Baxter himself. On Saturday, July
2, Mary G and Shamrock, featuring Mary Gibbons and Frankie
Lee will perform. Baxter may also
perform on Sunday.
The Irish Circle will have a
brand new solid oak bar, new
lighting and new equipment but
work and improvements will
continue after this weekends soft
opening. Theres a crazy rush to
open now because if you let the
holiday go by, youre done for the
summer, Baxter said. Come out
and welcome back a Rockaway
landmark, the Irish Circle.
The Irish Circle is located at
112-16 Rockaway Beach Boulevard. There is parking available for up to 16 cars behind the
building. Call 347-926-4108 for
more info.

Yay. The boardwalk from

Not sure what to call them

With the boardwalk now

BREXIT ? WHAT ABOUT ROCKAWEXIT?

By Lou Pastina

If you havent noticed recently

the Brits, the bad guys in the play
Hamilton, and more recently our
best friends, decided to exit the
European Union. Great Britain,
a true democracy, put the vote to
the people: and 52 percent voted to leave. Majority wins! Unlike
the United States, which is a representative democracy, meaning
that we vote for people who vote
for us. Remember Al Gore winning the popular vote but George
Bush winning the Electoral College? Big difference! Not that I was
upset back then, I voted for Bush
and still believe he kept us safe.
It seems the Brits were fed up
with being overrun by immigrants. Guess they havent figured
out those folks coming to their
island are not immigrants just

former colonized citizens from

their former Empire. I personally
have heard cabbies driving those
iconic black cabs moaning that
no one is from England anymore.
Of course, they were telling that to
someone who had just arrived in
their country. Go figure!
They also were fed up with their
legislators, or MPs in Parliament,
being overruled by the EU in
Brussels. Cant say that I blame
them on that point. Interestingly enough the folks in Scotland,
Northern Ireland all voted to
stay in the Union, while England
proper did not. The young voted
overwhelming to stay, while the
older folks wanted out. The young
realized that it was to their benefit to be able to go to any country
with a EU passport to find work.
The older set had a romanticized
vision of the sun never setting on
the British Empire.
Certainly impacts the rest of
Europe, for sure. Their reaction
was swift: Dont let the door hit
you on the way out, The Greeks
were going to do the same back
in 2008, but they really needed

those loans from the EU to open

their ATMs back up, and to keep
the tourism alive.
Definitely impacts Ireland who
will remain a EU country. But their
relationship with Northern Ireland
could be impacted, since they are
no longer all part of the EU and
now will be considered different
countries: one in the EU and one
not. Scotland and Wales will probably look to separate again. In fact,
I believe they are running Braveheart videos 24x7 there now.
Trump thinks this proves what
he has been saying all along. Keep
the immigrants out; make America great again; blah, blah, blah.
Hillary didnt see the vote going
that way at all. But we do need
Britain, and we need a strong
Europe. They say it will take two
years to figure out the divorce
proceedings. Guess well see.
But maybe the Brits are on to
something here. I mean think
about, Staten Island has been
trying to secede from New York
for decades. Maybe Rockaway
should think of exiting Queens
maybe even New York. We could

hook-up with Britain! They are

losing all their colonies again;
maybe they would like to secure
a foothold in the New World? I
figure they got the message about
no taxation without representation, someone from there must
have seen Hamilton?
Just think about the boardwalk.
The federal government awarded about $450 million, yet it only
cost about $200 million to do the
boardwalk. Where did the other
money go? Hello City Hall! Yeah,
I know you are probably saying
we need firemen, policemen,
and sanitation men: but, we have
a large number of those people
already living here; now they can
work here too!
We would need our own mayor. Someone could run on a platform of keeping the hipsters out.
Maybe we can get Trump to build
a wall. This way we could be like
Britain: fiercely independent,
proud of our islands heritage,
keeping Britain for the British and
Rockaway for the Rockawayites!
On second thought, lets keep
those bridges open!

The weekend will kick off
with a Heros Welcome Parade
on Thursday, July 7th which
will enter Rockaway shortly after 6 p.m. The planned route
will be: down Rockaway Beach
Blvd from Beach 149th to Beach
120th Street, passing Memorial
Circle, continuing down Beach
120th Street to Beach Channel
Drive, then west to the State Road
in Roxbury and Breezy Point
where it will enter Beach 208th
Street, around the Ball Field, back
east on State Road where it will
conclude at the Rockaway Point
Yacht Club. All are asked to sport
their brightest red, white and blue
colors in support of these soldiers
and their families.
This year's events will consist of sailing, fishing, paddle

boarding, kayaking, and surfing

as part of a continuing partnership with The Breezy Point Coop, AMP Surf, the FDNY and the
NYPD. On Friday and Saturday
mornings, a surfing clinic will be
held on Beach 219th Street from
9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The Breezy
Point Co-op is private property
so these events are closed to the
public.
The Warriors and their families from Camp Lejeune, NC
will be taking in a Brooklyn Cyclones baseball game at MCU
Park on Friday night, which is
also First Responders Night.
On Saturday evening, the group
will visit a firehouse and share
experiences with the members
of the FDNY.
The last event of the Hope For
The Warriors inaugural weekend will be a Memorial service
on Sunday, July 10th at 10 a.m.
held at Breezy Points September 11th Memorial. Participants
are encouraged to bring chairs.
Donations can be made to the
FDNY Foundation and mailed
to or dropped off at 27 Reid Ave

Scaccia To Start
Naval Academy
Belle Harbor resident John
R. Scaccia, who attended St.
Francis de Sales through fifth
grade and graduated from Poly
Prep in Brooklyn was inducted
into the Naval Academy Class of
2020 and will begin six challenging weeks of basic midshipman
training as part of Plebe Summer. Scaccia was a Congressional Nominee of Senator Charles
Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Gregory Meeks. Approximately 1,200
candidates are selected each
year for the Academys plebe
or freshman class, and each student is required to participate in
Plebe Summer.
During this time, plebes
have no access to television,

movies, the internet or music,

and restricted access to cell
phones. They are only permitted to make three calls during
the six weeks of Plebe Summer.
The pressure and rigor of
Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help plebes prepare
for their first academic year
at the Naval Academy and the
four years of challenge, which
awaits them.
The academys alumni include one president, 21 members of Congress, five governors, 73 Medal of Honor
recipients, two Nobel Prize
winners, 52 astronauts and
over 4,000 admirals and generals.

Oh Man,
This Is A Must-See
There aren't many sporting events that I get excited
over. Loyal Beefchip fans,
the three of you, would
know that events such as
RBVL Playoffs and Marathon Sunday are days that
I wake up like a kid on
Christmas morning. They
are "Professionals Only"
days, whereas Amateurs
cannot really comprehend
why it's such a great day,

and "Pros" just get it. And

If you still don't get it, just
count yourself as an Amateur.
Drinking days aside, on
Friday July 8th, Rockaway
Beach is in for a real treat.
An absolute must-see, seen
and be seen, nail biting,
exciting, Facebook check
ins for days event that this
peninsula has ever seen.
FDNY Boxing together with

Georgi Vodka, The Bungalow Bar, Jameson's Pub,

and a lot of other people I
forget, PROUDLY PRESENT
a night of what I would call
"Almost Pros" and "Definitely Out of Shape Amateurs" at "The War at The
Shore."
That's right friends. This
is one of those rare, once in
a lifetime events that CANNOT be missed. It may not
make as much sense to you
as it does to me, but let me
fill you in. Yes, a semi-pro
boxing match excites me.
However, the draw of this
event lies in the Grudge
Matches of the Undercard.
Legendary FDNY boxing
coach Bobby McGuire has
called on some of Rockaway's favorite sons. In
the name of charity and
good will, Bobby has asked
Chef and FDNY heartthrob
Mike "The Pressure Cooker" Egan, Pete "The Heat"
Hayden, Marty "The Handsome Hitter" Tubridy and
"Jabbing" JoJo O'Grady to
lace up the gloves. True

The Rockaway Times

to their charitable nature,
these sons are bravely rising to the occasion.
Let's examine the tale of
the tape. While Chef Mike
"The
Pressure
Cooker"
Egan makes a living eating
smoke, and occasionally
smokes delicious ribs, he
puts down his "ov" gloves
for a pair of 12 ounce boxing gloves. The weight of
his gloves should not be
an issue as he has kept
a strict training regimen
of 12-ounce curls for the
last 25 years. He is widely known for his boyish
charm, deafening whistle,
and mild temperament.
But I have no doubt, he will
make a worthy opponent to
fellow fire buff Pete "The
Heat" Hayden.
This super middleweight
phenom, hails from a long
and storied line of legendary civil servants. He certainly takes after them with
his dedication as family
man and service to others.

tivities to Hawaii like surfing?

Weve got beaches. We have
outdoor activities ranging
from hiking and biking to kayaking. We have a National Park
that encompasses our area.
Weve got plenty of great places to eat and drink. We have
arts and entertainment. We
have tourists. So, why not our
own Rockaway-inspired Aloha
shirt or sundress?
Let me provide some background on this blazing and

bold garment. What we commonly referred to as a Hawaiian shirt, is actually called the
Aloha shirt. It was devised in
the early 1930s by Chinese
merchant Ellery Chun, who
owned a store in Waikiki. Local residents, especially surfers, and tourists descended on
Chun's store and bought every
shirt he had. Within years,
major designer labels sprung
up all over Hawaii and began
manufacturing and selling

of your closet. Pass that suit or
dress that you wore at your last
wedding. Keep going. Past the
leather or dungaree jacket that
doesnt fit you anymore. There
it is, that brilliantly colored
piece of material with floral
patterns that you forgot you
still had. The gift that your relatives brought you back when
they honeymooned in Maui.
You know, the thing you wore
only once, to that Jimmy Buffett concert. Now pull it out of
your closet.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen,
Hawaiian shirts are back.
Multiple news sources including the NY Post, Fox News
and the Wall Street Journal are
reporting that the Hawaiian
shirt is back in style this year.
Is there a better place to sport
one than in Rockaway?
Dont we have similar ac-

Aloha shirts en masse. Aloha

shirts may be worn by men or
women; women's aloha shirts
usually have a lower-cut,
v-neck style. The lower hem is
straight, as the shirts are not
meant to be tucked in.
After World War II, many
servicemen and servicewomen returned to the United
States from Asia and the Pacific islands with Aloha shirts
made in Hawaii since the
1930s. The tropical-print shirts
for men and sundresses for
women became standard and
sometimes tacky souvenirs for
travelers, but some designers and manufacturers have
raised the garments to the
level of high fashion with artistic prints, high-grade materials and quality construction.
Elvis Presley resurrected the
trend by wearing a red aloha
shirt that was featured on the

Waterside School for Leadership walked in support of a
teacher in their school to raise
awareness for Multiple Sclerosis. The goal was to lend
strength and voices in order
to help create awareness to
find a cure for this disease
which affects the lives of over
2 million people worldwide.

The students, staff and many

parents from the Waterside
School for Leadership joined
together and arranged orange
seashells on the beach by
Beach 97th Street and Beach

to notice an orange seashell
remember that is the WSL reminding everyone we need to

Hoop Memories
Dear Editor:
As someone who spent the
first 25 years or so of my life,
playing on the small, sandy,
windswept basketball courts
of Rockaway, I would like to
commend Ryan Woerner's
columns about the best West
End players. While waiting
for his last installment of the
top 3 players, I was ready to
pounce on any mistakes, but
I believe he got them right.
There can be no arguing with
Dick McGuire's Hall of Fame
career. I was a contemporary of Nancy Lieberman's
St. Francis DeSales CYO team
and they probably could have

THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 2016

beaten the USA Olympic team
of that era and of course the
GREAT Brian Winters.
Having grown up on the
legendary basketball block
of Beach 119th street, we
had TWO NBA players from
our block when I was a kid.
Everyone knows about Brian Winters, but we also had
the former Bishop Loughlin
star, member of the Acadia
College Sports Hall of Fame,
All Canada College Basketball Team and member of
the 1969 Baltimore Bullets,
Brian Heaney! Of course any
discussion of great Rockaway basketball players (not
west enders) should include
a pair of former Far Rockaway
H.S. and St. John's basketball
greats. Melvin Utley played
for the Indiana Pacers and
the Cleveland Cavaliers and
Johnny Warren who played
on the greatest NYC basketball team of all time, the 1969
NBA Champions, N.Y. Knickerbockers.
Every neighborhood has a
basketball legend who didn't
go onto the NBA. Many peo-

ple have heard of NBA great

Karl "The Mailman" Malone.
Well, years before Karl Malone
played in the NBA, Rockaway
had the first basketball postal legend, the mythical Jimmy
"The Mailman" Walsh, who
has since moved on to coaching young Rockaway ballers
for the last couple of decades.
In my grammar school days,
the Winters backyard was the
only basketball court between
B. 109 Street & B. 129. Around
the time I was in the 7th
grade, there were about another ten basketball-crazed
youngsters on the block and
the Winters backyard was our
hangout. One Saturday morning we all decided to meet
in Winters backyard at 7:00
a.m.and play some hoops. We
all showed up at 7:00 a.m. yelling, screaming, playing some
ball and having a good old
time. The second floor window comes up, Mrs. Winter's
head comes out of the window and she asks us politely
"Boys could you please come
back at 9:00 a.m.?" My favorite
Rockaway basketball memory

The Rockaway Times

will always be of my mother at
all the games, screaming "Defense, keep your hands up"
and yelling at the refs. Rockaway basketball, the way it
should be!

Travel Tip
Dear Editor:
When I began to plan my
coming
honeymoon,
the
choice of travel agent to book
the cruise was a no-brainer.
I turned to Aggie Batista and
her Rockaway-based travel
agency, Dreams Vacation.
It was a no-brainer because
I have previously used Aggie
to book five of the numerous
cruises I have taken over the
past decade, and her work is
always as flawless as it is personal.
Aggie always gives her clients the personal experience
that is missing with other travel agents- and especially with
impersonal internet bookers.
I really believe in dealing with

PEP So Out of Step

Dear Editor:
In all my 60+ years as a resident of Belle Harbor, what I
witnessed on Saturday, June
25 was by far the best example
of misappropriation of our
city resources, namely Parks
Enforcement Patrol (PEP).
While enjoying a beautiful
beach day, a PEP officer on
his ATV weaved in and out
of beachgoers blankets and
chairs to speak to a circle of
a dozen or so 30 -something,
professional
homeowners
about their glass containers
(beer). He gave the group a
warning, which they com-

In Loving Memory

PAUL E. ARNEMANN

Page 19

plied with by disposing their

bottles neatly into the garbage can. He left only to return with his white shirt supervisor who threatened the
circle with detainment for
having alcohol on the beach
(now red cups). As the group
gathered its belongings and
started to leave the PEP officer wearing a red polo shirt
put his ATV into reverse and
began moving without looking around his surroundings. Behind him were several young children, some
standing and some lying
in the warm sand. Parents
screamed in panic and the
PEP officer stopped, thankfully
no one was hurt.
As an upset parent approached
the PEP officers, the PEP officer
in the white shirt pulled out a
can of Mace!!! The parent was
visibly upset by both actions taken by the PEP officers, said his
peace and left with his children.
The circle of residents also left
the beach. So much for a nice
beach day!!
When the new PEP Captain
Elizabeth Gallagher arrived,

she had no concern about

her officers actions but said
that the rules of the beach
are posted on the Parks Dept.
website and she intends to
enforce them. This is another
fine example of Mayor de Blasios initiative for Rockaway,
hassling beachgoers who
are respectful of their beach,
their neighbors and not bothering anyone.
I refer to an interview with
Captain Gallagher published
two weeks ago, I quote, She
tells her staff theres no reason to be rash with them.
Theyre here to enjoy themselves."
Well Captain, the actions of
your polo shirts was rash
to say the least and dangerous to say the very least. I do
hope you instruct your staff
as to how to navigate the now
shortened beach safely, perhaps parking their ATV and
walking to the suspected rule
breakers on foot for the safety
of all, especially young children who tend to run free on
the beach.

They say that time will heal
But neither time nor reason
Will change the way we feel
For no one knows the heartache
that lives behind our smiles
No one knows how many times
We have broken down and cried
We want to tell you something

BEEFCHIP

Continued from Page 14

But rumors and rumblings
around the peninsula have
it that Hayden's training
camp consists of a repetitious chipping and putting regimen. Word has it,
"The Heat" is passing on
his knowledge of this new
workout serving ice cold
beers at the 19th Hole of
The Rockaway Beach Golf
Club. Hayden comes into
this match with a nearly
flawless record in the Rockaway Beach After Hours Division. His previous three
wins however were unsanctioned turf war matches by way of The Bridge
Cafe, High Tides, and The
New Irish Circle. His lightning quick speed has him
at even odds with his childhood friend Egan according to Las Vegas odds makers. Local Celebrity Bert
Friedman sees Hayden as
a 2-1 favorite in the Super
Middleweight Division.
"Jabbing" JoJo O'Grady

proudly reps NY Strongest,

DSNY and Belle Harbor's
staple Jameson's Pub. In a
bold move, and after asking three unnamed men, he
challenged his opponent,
Marty "The Handsome Hitter" Tubridy to a test of
manhood. The challenge
was
quickly
accepted,
and soon after the training camps of both teams
got to work. Under the tutelage of boxing legends
Tommy Cadotte and Timmy
McGuiness , O'Grady has
nearly perfected his untested jab at The Hit Factory in
Bay Ridge. JoJo comes into
the ring as a formidable
opponent to a well-known
Broad Channel native.
Representing the International Brotherhood of
Electrical Workers and
Bungalow Bar, Tubridy is
known for his heavy hands.
Equally recognizable is his
ferocious appetite, and
commitment to the Art of
Black Out.
Trainer Abe
Siederman has had his work
cut out for him getting the

once handsome hitter into

shape, however he comes
into the ring with a recent
victory under his belt in
unsanctioned but uncontested match at Community House. Tubridy, who is
widely known as all around
funny man, quickly wiped
the smiles off of four unlucky souls that happened
to be bullying a fellow
patron at the beautifully
renovated establishment.
With The Murphy Brothers, (O'Grady's brothersin-law) as Tubridys corner
men, JoJo certainly has his
hands full. BeefChip sees
this bout going at least one
round. According to Vegas odds makers, there are
more prop bets on if the
match will go the distance,
and who will run out of
breath first.
Rockaway
Odds Maker Dicko has this
one favored 3-2 OGrady
while Broad Channel's
Chris Keegan has it 5-1 in
Tubridys favor. July 8th
will prove who is correct.
At the end of the day,

The Rockaway Times

I applaud these lads for
stepping
into
unlikely
roles. They are genuinely
good men to take on such a
burden, and I understand
fully why they without
hesitation answered the
call. The charity, "Building Homes for Heros" is an
organization dedicated to
building brand new fully
equipped homes for disabled veterans.
Besides
their
Rockaway
Beach
roots, these men share
another common bond as
"Sons of X avier," truly embodying the Jesuit mantra, "Men for Others." Behind these men, are wives
who are understandably
cautious, so I send a BIG
Beefchip shoutout to them
as well. Gentlemen, your
skills may classify you as

Over Door Storage

!

By Artie Wallace

Have you ever tried to hang

a If youre like most people, you never have enough
storage space. Utilizing that
empty space over the door
can add a lot of storage space,
and its easy to do. In some
cases over-the-door storage is as simple as putting a
shelf above the door jam. But
dont be fooled, there are a
few things you need to consider.
Shelving material:
If youre going to be storing light things on your shelf,
any shelving board will do
fine. If youre going to store
heavier items, you will need
a strong wood (like Oak)
for your shelf. Cutting your
shelves out of plywood is al-

ways an option, but the edge should have a bracket on

can even mount your brackets on the top of the shelf

mount it to the ceiling or
wall using chain.
2- If there is no molding

a wide variety ranging from better to do it before installplain metal brackets to dec- ing and do a little touch-up

Rule of thumb:
Always figure youre going
to be putting more weight on
your shelf than youre planning. Be sure to support your
shelf and use the proper material for the extra weight. It
is better to have more support and not need it than not
enough support and something falls or someone gets
hurt.

COPD
By Peter Galvin, MD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary

disease (COPD), also known as
emphysema, occurs in about 14
percent of US adults aged 40 to 79
and it is the third leading cause of
death in the US. Unlike asthma,
which is a reversible restriction
of airflow, airflow restriction in
COPD is not reversible meaning it
often does not respond to medications that improve asthma symptoms. In asthma, airflow restriction is due to spasm or narrowing
of bronchial tubes. Airflow restriction in COPD is due to destruction
of lung tissue, specifically the alveoli, which are the small sacs in
the lung where gas exchange oc-

curs. People with COPD are short

of breath because they dont have
enough remaining viable lung
tissue. More than 70 percent of all
COPD cases are directly linked to
cigarette smoking. Exposure to
toxins, dusts or industrial chemicals accounts for about 15 percent
of cases. Environmental pollution,
like wood smoke and traffic pollutants, is associated with an increased risk of COPD. Other risk
factors include a history of asthma
and/or childhood respiratory diseases and a rare genetic disease
called alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency.
About 13.7 million US adults are
affected annually with COPD. As
lung function declines over time

sufferers experience significant

restrictions in their ability to work
and participate in other activities of
daily living. In 2013 COPD was responsible for about 10 million physician visits and 1.5 million ER visits
and the annual healthcare costs for
COPD are estimated at $32 billion
dollars. In a disease this common
most people would assume that
screening for it would be worthwhile. It turns out that just the opposite is recommended.
The US Preventive Services Task
Force (USPSTF), a government
agency that makes screening recommendations, has suggested
that screening for COPD should
not be performed, in fact it discourages the use of screening. To
quote them: The USPSTF recommends against this service. There
is a moderate or high certainty
that the service has no net benefit or that the harms outweigh
the benefit. The reason for this is
that they found no evidence that
screening (i.e. office questionnaire
or in-office breathing test [spirometry]) for COPD in asymptomatic
people improved health-related
quality of life, morbidity or mortality. They also found that detecting

COPD early in the course of the

disease did not alter the course or
severity of the disease and did not
improve patient outcomes.
The USPSTF does suggest that all
clinicians ask adults about tobacco
use and offer tobacco cessation interventions and advice. They also
recommend that interventions, including education or counseling,
be provided to school-age children
and adolescents to prevent initiation of tobacco use. In essence if
you smoke you should stop and
if you have been diagnosed with
COPD and still smoke every cigarette causes more irreversible lung
damage and puts you closer to life
on oxygen therapy or, worse yet,
on a ventilator. Also if your work
environment is dusty or contains
chemicals you need to wear a
properly fitting respirator. See your
doctor for help quitting smoking or
if you have shortness of breath that
interferes with your daily activities.

BEING FREE
By Paulette Mancuso

Coming up on Independence Day, we are reminded

that freedom is a most precious gift. We celebrate the
beginning of our summer season with the 4th of July; but
probably dont think about
the significance nor the many
ways that being free is essential to being well and happy.
What does it mean to be free?
Freedom is a state of mind,
heart and spirit. No one can

give it to us, no one can buy

it for us, no one can share
theirs with us. It is one of our
deep inner core workings that
forms who we are, how we act
and interact.
Feeling constraint, second-guessing, holding back
good feelings, falling into
long-ago states of mind,
thinking negative thoughts
these are all contrary to being
free and only hinder us from
an open-hearted, free-thinking, happy spirit way of life. If
only we can flip a switch! The

The Rockaway Times

next best method is through

awareness. When we are fully
aware of what we are thinking, feeling and spiritualizing,
we can begin to take all of the
free inhibitors out of our
beings. Being fully aware is
a process of peeling the onion of negativity, habits and
insecurity. It is all in the examination: taking the time to
be in tune and have an inner
dialogue about it. Or talk out
loud! Soon there will be clarity. Peeling the onion each
layer being some thought or
some feeling that restricts that
good feeling of freedom and
peace. Peel it away. Just peel
it away.
When I was young, I thought
being free was not wearing a
bra (!), funny, but that in itself
was a physical manifestation
of what I was feeling. I guess
I needed it to be a physical
state to validate that sense of
freedom. But, that is not necessary at all. We can be all
buttoned up from head to toe
and have a gleam in our eyes
that is the mirror of the mindheart-spirit awakened to the

calm, joyous feeling of inner

freedom and peace.
How to get there? I always
come back to just stopping
and taking some time to think
and allow awareness to unfold. In all the busy-ness of
life as we know it, make a
conscious effort to arrive in a
place in a space that is yours
for a few moments to contemplate the above. How much
more happy would it be to feel
free?
I always come back to: what
we think, say and feel really becomes a part of us. So,
through taking some time to
be aware and thinking, saying
and deeply feeling what we
want to unfold: in this case, to
feel free, the trueness of it will
come forth. Energy follows
intention. If it is our intention
to be free, then the energy will
follow.
May you be happy. May
you be free. May you let go of
things that do not serve you.
May you be grateful for what
you have and what you do
not have. May you have inner
peace.

ALOHA ROCKAWAY!

Continued from Page 15

album cover for the Blue Hawaii soundtrack in 1961. John

Wayne and Frank Sinatra went
Hawaiian as well. The trend
became hot again in the '70s
through the early '90s, but it is
back after a 20-year respite.
This shirt actually spurred a
modern fashion trend that corporate America adopted. Hawaii's custom of Aloha Friday
slowly spread east to California,
continuing around the globe
until the 1990s, when it eventually became known as Casual
Friday. You can thank our Hawaiian friends for being able to
dress down, especially during
hot summer months when the
air conditioning on the A train
isnt working properly.
Are you afraid that a Hawaiian shirt is too loud? Well,
there are options. Sportswear
companies like Tommy Bahama reintroducing toned-down
versions that could fit into anyones wardrobe. Other designers like Valentino, Dries Van
Noten, Topman, and J.Crew

are also pushing a casual version of the shirt.

We can even take this a step
further and localize the trend.
Were reinventing other traditions but in Rockaway style, like
the Mermaid Parade and the
Oyster Festival. Why not reinvent Aloha shirts? We have plenty of creative minds in the area
as well as independently-owned
fashion retail outlets and cutting-edge fashion contests. Why
not create Rockaway-inspired
Aloha wear that we can sport
proudly and be the envy of the
rest of the city? Maybe the demand can create our own cottage industry and provide local
jobs? Why not even use photos
from the Rockaway Times Photo Contest as patterns for these
shirts? They can be sold at our
local stores and boardwalk fairs
and festivals.
In any event, its time to replace that tedious tee or golf
shirt with something new.
Lets have some fun and add
some color and make this part
of our Rockaway summer. I almost forgot why not dress the
pets up as well?

In Touch With Tech

IN PURSUIT OF TRIVIA
By Pat Morgan

In the mid 80s, I recall heated battles among teams of two

playing the board game Trivial Pursuit in small Brooklyn
apartments that ran late into
the night. The activity stoked
our competitive natures, challenging us to see how much we
retained from our school days
or how well we paid attention
to the latest trends. Peoples appetites to challenge themselves
on trivia hasnt waned, but has
been adapted to the digital age.
There are a dozens of trivia
apps available for your smart
devices ranging from general categories to song or sports
knowledge to brain-teasing
apps that exercise your mental
muscles. This article will highlight two of the most popular
general trivia apps available on
iOS, Android, Windows Phone,
Facebook, and the Amazon
App Store.
Trivia Crack is a mobile app that

allows users to compete against

friends and people around the
world. The game's objective is to
obtain all six characters on the
wheel. Each cartoonish character represents one of the question
categories: Art, Science, Sports,
Entertainment, Geography and
History. The first player to obtain
all six characters will be the winner of the game. Each game will
have a maximum of 25 rounds.
To obtain a character, a player must correctly answer three
questions in a row, or land on the
special section on the wheel. In
this case, the player will choose
between challenging the opponent for one of their characters, or
simply answering a new question
for a character of choice. In case of
a correct answer, the player gets the
character. There is the free version
of the game, which comes with irritating ads. The paid version is $2.99,
which is well worth it, especially
when you are on a roll, because as
the games name indicates, it can
be addictive. Id also suggest that

Protect your world

you turn down the volume on your

device because the sound effects
can be embarrassing, especially in
public places.
For more information, visit
their website: triviacrack.com
QuizUp is free, award-winning
multiplayer trivia game where a
player competes against another during seven rounds of timed
multiple-choice questions of various topics. Unlike Trivia Cracks
seven categories, Quiz Up has
over 1,200 total topics available
for users to choose from. All the
questions are voluntarily submitted by content contributors. My
buddy Errol contributes questions about one of his favorite
bands, the Allman Brothers, and
introduced me to this game.
Once downloaded, players
have the option of signing into
the app through a social media
platform such as Facebook, or
via your email address. You also
need to create your handle
which appears when challenging
an opponent.

Players start a game by choosing a topic of interest from one of

the many categories, including
popular culture categories like
movies and television shows, literary and musical topics, athletic
sports and games categories, and
scholarly categories like history,
science, and geography. If you
are a fan of television shows such
as Game of Thrones or Seinfeld,
there is a category for you to test
your knowledge against other
players from around the world. In
celebration of the Fourth of July,
the app is currently featuring a
Best Of USA section.
Since this is a free app, there
are ads, but they dont run that
often and you can quickly X out
of them. If you like deep-diving
into a topic, then this app is for
you.
For more information, you can
visit their website: quizup.com/en
Quick: what is the capital of
Obskuristan? Just testing your
knowledge. (There is no such
country).

THE HOTEL MAJESTIC,

ARVERNE-BY-THE-SEA
Chicken and Bulgur
Salad with Avocado
By Sharon Feldman

By Emil R. Lucev, Sr. & his daughter Katie Lucev

The Hotel Majestic was built in

1893 on Rockaway Beach Blvd. at
the southeast corner of Beach 69th
Street known then as Remington
Ave. The large edifice served the
area well, until it was torn down
in 1928 and replaced by an office
building with commercial space.
In this postcard view Rockaway
Beach Blvd. goes left to right (or
east to west) and Beach 69th Street
leads to the beach (or south) in the
background.

13. The Foodcrest Supermarket.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

In heatproof bowl, cover the
bulgur with the boiling water.
Cover the bowl with a plate and
let stand until the water has absorbed and the bulgur is tender,
about 30 minutes.
On a rimmed baking sheet,
coat the chicken breasts with
1 tablespoon of the grape seed
oil. Season with salt and pepper.
Roast for 40-45 minutes, until
golden, and temperature reaches 165 degrees. Discard the skin.
Slice the chicken inch thick.
In a small bowl, whisk the orange juice with the basil, lemon juice, scallions and remaining cup of grape seed
oil; season with vinaigrette
with salt and pepper.
In a bowl, toss the bulgur,
chicken avocados, fennel
and tomatoes with the vinaigrette; season with salt and
pepper. Mound the salad
onto plates and serve.
If bulgur or couscous or
rice or potatoes are too heavy
for this summer dish use
a bed of lettuce. The vinaigrette works nicely over arugula or romaine.

Chasing Mister Softee:

A CHAT WITH ROCKAWAY BEACHS ICE CREAM MAN
By Katie McFadden

Nothing says summer like

hearing the Mister Softee
jingle as he rolls down your
block. Did you know the song
has lyrics? The creamiest,
dreamiest soft ice-cream, you
get from Mister Softee! Thats
just one line. If youre a regular customer, he probably
knows your name and what
you want before you order, but
how much do you know about
the man behind the truck? We
chased down the Rockaway
Beach Mister Softee truck and
caught up with Argirios Kostaras, better known as Ari, to
learn more about him.
Ari lives in Jackson Heights,
Queens, but comes from Kostaria in western Greece. He
left Greece in 1980 and first
worked in the fur business after coming to America. In the
late 80s, Ari says the business
went downhill and he started
looking for a different job. In
1990, a neighbor who owned a
Mister Softee truck asked Ari if
he wanted to work for him. He
worked for his friend Pete for
one season before purchasing
his own franchise in 1991. Ari
can cover a route from Beach
51st to Beach 149th, but hes
become known as Rockaway
Beachs ice cream man while
fellow Softee, John, covers
mostly uptown.
To answer some common
questions: Why doesnt he
weigh 400 pounds? Ari says he
actually gains more weight in
the winter. I have to taste the
ice cream every day, but when
I work, I dont eat much. I
also have good genes, he
said, but he does enjoy an
occasional soft serve or Good
Humor pop. Does the jingle
drive him crazy? If anyone
would complain about the
music, its me because Ive
been hearing it for so long,
but you get used to it, he
said. He would never change
the song but he admitted to
listening to his own music
while driving. Why does he
come around so late? To cater to the late night crowd. I

dont work with kids at night,

most of my customers are
adults, he said.
Ari says youll first see him
in late March and he sticks
around until late October.
Ari rarely gets a day off in the
summer, as he works seven
days a week, as long as it isnt
raining. Hell start his route
around noon and will work
until 10 p.m., or sometimes
later, but his day extends
much more. Mister Softee cant just bring the truck
home with him. Theres actually a Mister Softee Depot.
The truck stays in Ozone
Park in a depot approved by
the Department of Health.
You cant keep the trucks
anywhere. They undergo
regular inspections by the
DOH, Ari said. He wakes up
around 8:30 or 9 a.m. to put
in new orders for the day
and to pick up and stock the
truck, and even earlier if the
truck is having problems.
At the end of every shift, Ari
spends two hours thoroughly
cleaning. He usually doesnt
leave the depot until 1/1:30
a.m. Cleaning is something
Ive been very strict about all
these years. I need to finish
the truck at night and make
sure its ready for the next
day, he said. His care has
paid off. Hes had the same
truck for 21 years. It does the

job. You have to love the truck

so it can love you back, Ari
said.
Ari also takes his cleaning
skills into the offseason. I
work as a janitor for the Board
of Education at a school in
Woodside, he said. If he can
find some time off, Ari may
take a two or three-week trip
to his homeland in Greece. Ari
is also a photographer in his
free time. I got my first camera when I was 13 years old,
he said. He occasionally photographs customers, after getting permission of course, and
hell even jump in for a photo if
someone asks, but his favorite
photos are of landscapes.
I love Rockaway because it
gives you so many different
things to photograph. It has
the most beautiful sunsets Ive
ever seen. Sometimes if I dont
have camera with me I take
10 minutes just to enjoy the
beautiful sunset or rainbows
after a storm, he said. I dont
sell my photos. I just put them
on Facebook so people can
see how beautiful Rockaway
is, but occasionally someone
will tell me one of my photos is
hanging in their living room,
he said. Ari had several entries
in this years Rockaway Times
photo contest, which made the
semifinalist round.
Through his many years of
seeing Rockaway through a

lens or a windshield, Ari has

seen some changes, especially when it comes to business.
When I started in the 90s,
the streets were packed with
people and now I think people spend too much time on
their phones and computers.
Kids used to play ball outside,
but theyre not going out as
much as they used to, he said.
With less people coming out to
buy ice cream, plus the rise of
everything from insurance to
taxes to gas and even ice cream
prices, Ari has been forced to
raise his prices from $1.25 to
about $2.50 for a cone. Im
making much less now than I
did 25 years ago, he said. How
much does he make? I can
make $200 a day or $500 a day.
Every day is different. One
price has never changed. I
love to see the smile on a child
or adults face. I have customers that are now parents who
used to get ice cream from me
when they were kids. It feels
good to have people that like
you and grow up with you. Im
happy with all of my customers. No matter where I go, we
have this beautiful relationship, he said. Ari says he also
has a good relationship with
the local police, who offer
their help, even going as far
as escorting him to a mechanic when his truck was having
problems. Regular customers
have also helped him replace
tires on his truck. In return, Ari
has given back to the community when needed. I had just
finished up my season when
Sandy happened and because
I live in Jackson Heights, I was
able to get gas and bring it to
Rockaway to help people with
their generators and bring
them water. It was just something nice to do.
Ari says hell continue to
serve the community and
bring smiles to local faces as
long as he can. I wouldve
never done this job for so
long if it wasnt for Rockaway Beach and the Rockaway
people. I love Rockaway and
I admire the people. That will
never change, Ari said.

she wanted to bring the gift of

roller disco to the peninsula
was as a thank you to the community. Im so appreciative of
how supportive the community has been since I opened
my store. Everyone kept asking
when I was going to bring roller
disco here and this is my way of
giving back to the community
for supporting me, she said.
She also believes that roller
disco is something the community can use. I love the Rockaway community and I believe
in the power of roller disco
and bringing the community
together. Roller disco is better
than any therapy. Moving to
the music and dressing up is

therapeutic. When my friends

are going through something, I
tell them to come to the roller
disco because you feel so much
better after. Rockaway has been
through so much with Sandy
and I wanted to bring this gift
to the community so everyone
can experience it, Star said.
Star has had a bit of help to
bring roller disco to life. A big
part of roller disco is the tunes
to skate to. DJs Max Power and
Rich Hill will play all your roller disco favorites this summer
and will keep it going at their
official after party at Playland.
Theyre going to continue
with a dance party with a similar vibe to the roller disco
party, Star said. She also credits the Rockaway Rockies for
showing her the ropes around
their home rink. Theyve
been so welcoming and gave
me advice on things like the
lighting around the rink, so I
hired some of them as skate
guards to help lift people up if
they fall and make sure people
follow the rules to have a fun,
safe time, Star said.

down just one day after Star got
it. Rockaways roller disco parties were slated to start around
Memorial Day, but as the truck
required repair, the parties were
put on hold.
After two years of working toward her Rockaway roller disco
dreams, the first party was held
last Saturday. Ive been faced
with many obstacles along the
way to make this happen and
I lost my vision for a while but
I worked really hard and Im
thrilled that its finally here,
Star said. Last Saturday was a
trial run and it surpassed my
expectations. I had all these
people skating around at sunset while you could hear the
sound of the waves and it was
extraordinary.
Unlike her parties at Lakeside, which cost $18 a person,
Rockaways parties are free of
charge. Instead, she has been
paying for everything from purchasing the rental truck to paying for insurance and even rent
for the rink. Part of the reason

themes to add to the fun, which
Star says she may add down the
line. As far as themes go, Im
waiting to see who comes and
what they respond to. Well test
out the tunes and see what kind
of people are grooving to most,
she said. With performers, the
whole concept of Dreamland is
having these performers that
transport you into this magical
dreamland. Id love to bring in
performers, but being on a limited budget, I cant afford it at
the moment, she said. Star is
open to accepting donations
to add performers and other
fun elements and may consider sponsorships from local
businesses. For now, the most
important thing is getting the
party started. People need to
see roller disco and experience
these parties first because its
unlike anything in the world,
Star said. Stars biggest dream
is to have her own permanent
roller disco rink in the future.

This is to give notice that The JOSEPH P ADDABBO FAMILY HEALTH CENTER INC has applied for a
Health Infrastructure Investment Program (HIIP) grant from Health Resources and Services
Administration (HRSA) of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The JOSEPH P
ADDABBO FAMILY HEALTH CENTER INC proposes to construct a new facility at 6200 Beach
Channel Drive, Arverne, NY 11692.
The purpose of this notice is to inform the public that per Executive Order 11988 for
Floodplain Management, The JOSEPH P ADDABBO FAMILY HEALTH CENTER INC recognizes that the
proposed action will occur within the 100-year floodplain and that The JOSEPH P FAMILY HEALTH
CENTER INC has determined that this is the only practicable alternative for this project. The
project site is located within the Rockaway Peninsula, and most of the peninsula is located
within the 100-year floodplain. Relocating the health center outside the peninsula and 100-year
floodplain would leave Rockaway residents without access to affordable health care. The
JOSEPH P ADDABBO FAMILY HEALTH CENTER INC will comply with all state and/or local floodplain
protection standards and will take the following actions to mitigate the flood hazard/impacts:
The project will be constructed according to the Citys new Flood Resilience Zoning Text
Amendment. The proposed expansion will incorporate resilient and sustainable building
methods that meet or exceed current FEMA standards for development in coastal communities, including:

A Memorial at Sea
Dozens of family members,
friends and supporters came
out on Thursday, July 23 to remember Dylan Smith. Paying
respects to their fellow lifeguard
and surfer, many brought out
their boards to Beach 86th Street
for a memorial paddle out and a
celebration of Smiths life. Several carried roses out onto the
surf and splashed water in the

air as they remembered a beloved member of the community.

Smith, 23, died while surfing in
Puerto Rico on December 23,
2012. Just two months earlier,
he was credited for saving the
lives of several of his neighbors
on his surfboard on the night of
Hurricane Sandy. (Photos by

Rock Em Sock Em
FDNY VS. LONDON PD IN BOXING DUELS; GRUDGE BRAWLS TOO
By Dylan Watton

New Yorks bravest boxers,

Londons police pugilists, and
locals looking to settle a score
will compete in matches for
charity on Friday, July 8. The
event, billed as The War at the
Shore, is being held outdoors
at St. Camillus, with the first
bout scheduled to begin at 7
p.m. All fights are sanctioned
by USA Metro Boxing.
Rockaway has always been a
great neighborhood to support
fire department events, Bobby
McGuire, President of the FDNYs Bravest Boxing team, said
at the official weigh-in event
at Bungalow Bar on Monday,
June 27. We thought it would
be great to hold these fights
just steps away from the beautiful new boardwalk.
A total of 12 fights are currently scheduled for the evening.
In addition to eight FDNY
vs. London Metro Police Department contests, four sanctioned grudge matches will
take place, including firefighters taking on their brethren,
a CROM Physical Culture vs.
Rockaway Ropes matchup, and
a battle of bar owners. A variety
of weight classes and fighting
styles will be showcased.
FDNY head trainer Mike
Reno said that the idea for
the transatlantic tilt stemmed
from the World Police and
Fire Games, an Olympics-style
event contested around the
world. We made some connections and decided well do
it for our charity over here and
for their charity over there,

Reno said. The London Metro PD currently has bragging

rights as they were overall victorious in the 2015 event held
in the UK.
The FDNY Bravest Boxing
Team was founded in 1982
when an organizer of a fundraising event asked five firefighters and five police officers
to battle for charity. (McGuire,
a Rockaway native who now
lives in Howard Beach, was a
team captain for many years,
retiring from the ring in 1991.)
In keeping with the teams
mottoWell fight anyone,
anywhere, anytime.as long
as its for a good causeproceeds from the event will go to
Building Homes for Heroes, an
organization that builds mortgage-free houses for injured
veterans. This year a home will
be built for USMC Corporal
Kevin Vaughn of Merrick, who
was wounded in Afghanistan.
You see what these vets go
through and they give up so
much, whats getting in the
ring for three rounds? boxer
Jack Kirrane said. He will take
on Londons Luke Thomas in a
cruiserweight contest and look
to maintain his 5-0 record in
the series. Most of you cant
go in the ring and fight for [the
veterans] but I can and I will.
Kirrane said that he has been
boxing on and off since he
was 12 and has been part of the
FDNYs fighting squad since
2003. He has found it hard to
hang up the gloves. You get
the itch. Im always showing
up to help out at the shows and
when youre not being one of

the fighters its tough. Im 40

so Im not sure how much I
have left.
Perhaps the most anticipated
fight will be between competitors who admittedly between
them have five weeks of boxing experience. Jamesons Joe
Joe OGrady challenged Martin Tubridy of Bungalow Bar,
who know each other from the
Graybeards basketball league
but have never traded competitive blows. I was going
through the roster looking for
someone in a similar weight
class and stupid enough to
agree, OGrady said.
Tubridy, who described
competing in a boxing match
as a bucket list thing, expressed some regret at accepting. I gotta be honest with
you, he ruined my summer,
he laughed. I had to get my
Rocky starter kit going and
stop drinking beer.
Both OGrady and Tubridy
admitted they were anxious

and nervous less than two

weeks prior to the bell. Martins probably more nervous
than me, OGrady quipped.
Tubridy did not deny the
claim, saying Its the chance
to get knocked out in front of
your family and friends for the
Championship of Rockaway.
The fear did not deter him
from adding a little trash talk
in an impromptu promo. We
already have the coldest beer
and now were gonna settle
this in the ring.
War at the Shore is sponsored by Georgi Vodka, Everlast, Budweiser, Long Trail,
and Tullamore Dew. Tickets
for the event are $25 (ringside
$50) and can be purchased at
www.fdnyboxing.com. Children under 12 are admitted
free. Intermission will feature
a performance by the FDNY
Emerald Society Bagpipers.
Food, drinks, a memorabilia auction, and a Cuban cigar
roller are also advertised.

Jamaica Bay Softball: Week 4 Recap

By The Commissioner

Things are starting to heat up as

were starting to see who are the
contenders and who are the pretenders. Due to make-up games
from Week 1, we had 12 games
on the schedule this week. Four
teams were forced to play four
games and all but one had a pretty good day. Out of the nine teams
in the league only the top six
make the playoffs. There is only a
difference of 2.5 games from the
7th place team to the 1st place
team so anything can happen in
the next few weeks.
In the battle of the teams without a win, the Chuggernauts took
on the Orioles. Both games went
back and forth, but the Chuggs
were able to edge out the Os 10-8
in Game 1 and then 11-7 in Game
2. After their first winning season and finishing 3rd last year, it
hasn't been so good for the Orioles as they dropped their 8th in
a row this year. Rumor has it that
they were tanking this year to
grab the #1 pick in the draft.

Other early game action had

Old Head taking on the young
Moneyballs. A quick 2-0 lead
from Old Head and chants of
Garbage Balls were heard
coming from their dugout. Jack
Tubridy didn't take that too lightly as he had a day at the plate
and played a solid 2nd base to
help the Moneyballs come back
to win 4-3. Moneyballs came out
the gate hot in Game 2 and won
easily 7-3. With the sweep, the
Moneyballs find themselves in a
tie for first.
Due to being rained out Week
1, the Knights of Columbus took
on Morning Wood in the last set
of early games. KOC jumped
to a quick lead in Game 1 but
Morning Wood battled back and
blew open the game to win 11-4.
In Game 2 it was the other way
around. M.W. had a nice lead
but clutch hitting by the Knights
got them back into the game and
eventually the lead. Great plays
by Ryan Suglia and James Lee
kept Morning Wood off the board
in last few innings and KOC was
able to hold on for a 12-9 win.

Morning Wood wasn't done

playing as they had to take on
the No-Shows. Game 1 was close
for most of the game but one too
many errors for the No-Shows let
M.W. tack on a bunch of runs and
win 8-3. Game 2 wasn't close at
all as Morning Wood won by the
mercy rule 14-2. Morning Wood
took 3/4 on the day and are tied
for the top spot in the league.
On the other field the Knights of
Columbus took on the hot Misfit
team. The Misfits were anything
but hot as KOC swept the Misfits
winning 11-8 and then 11-2. Misfits needed only one win to reach
their win total from last year but
will have to wait another week.
KOC had a big day winning 3/4
and trying to make a push to find
a spot in the postseason. The Misfits are sitting at .500 and holding
on to the last spot in playoffs.
After getting swept early on Old
Head had to sit around until all
the games were done to make up
their Week 1 matchup with the
No-Shows. No-Shows bats finally came alive after being quiet
in their earlier games but it still

wasn't enough to take down Old

Head. Two good close games but
Old Head came out on top 7-5 and
then 10-9. No-Shows dropped all
four of their games and are on the
verge of missing the playoffs for
the first time in their young history. Old Head now has five wins on
year and are only one game out of
1st place.
There are no games this weekend due to July 4th Weekend. The
league wishes all of players, fans,
and family to have a happy and
safe holiday.

GOLF ADVICE
PUTTING
By Joel Garyn (U.S.G.T.F. Instructor)

You can hold your putter in

different ways. I prefer the reverse overlap for better feel
and keeping putter head on
a square alignment. It is the
most common one used. You
place your left index finger
over the little finger of your
right hand (or extend it over
all the fingers of your right
hand). Both your thumbs are
positioned straight down the
grip. An important aspect of
the grip is where the putter
shaft rests in your hands.
Place your putter in the lifelines of your hands. This position reduces any tendency
for your wrists to hinge and
unhinge during the putting
stroke. It also helps to reduce
putter face rotation.
In putting, a common fault
is for the right hand to overpower the left hand in the for-

ward stroke and for the putt to

be pulled LEFT of the target.
To reduce any tendency for
the right hand to dominate, the
right hand is rested gently on
the shaft allowing the left hand
to guide the putting stroke. You
should pay close attention to
the correct alignment of your

shoulders and forearms after

you have placed your hands on
your putter.
Stay still to make more
putts.
After you have struck
your putt, hold your follow-through for about 3-6
seconds after the ball leaves

the club face and check the

following: 1. Has your body remained in its original address
position? 2. Is the path of your
putter still on the correct target
line? 3. Has your putter face
remained square to the target?
If any of these three things
happen, you are losing strokes
due to missed putts.
Last word for this segment.
Remember to keep your address position well after you've
struck your putt. This alone
will help your putting stroke
stays square to your target and
help you make more putts.
Stay absolutely quiet or still,
the only movement is your
shoulders that move your
arms which will move the
putter. I cannot emphasize to
strongly how important that is.
Next week we will talk about
short putts, long putts, drills to
help you become a confident
putter.
Have a safe and happy week!

Woerners World
ONCE A RUNNER KERRI GALLAGHER (PART 1)
By Ryan Patrick Woerner

The below is the first installment of a two-part series

chronicling Rockaway resident
Kerri Gallaghers journey to
this years United States Track
and Field Olympic Trials in
the 1500-meter event. Part II
will appear in next weeks issue of The Rockaway Times in
advance of her first race at this
pivotal meet.
You could point to a multitude of turning points that
spurred Belle Harbors Kerri
Gallagher to the starting line
at next weeks United States
Track and Field Olympic Trials. Was it the parochial school
medals she regularly acquired
at small-time meets held in
Van Cortlandt Park or the dry
heat of Washington Heights
Armory? Maybe it was her
first Atlantic-10 individual
800-meter Title while running
for Vince Lombardis alma
mater in the Bronx. One could
posit that it could have been
her Penn Relays Mile victory
in the spring of 2015 at historic
Franklin Field in the Womens
Mile over Canadian Olympian
and NCAA Champion Sheila
Reed. Just months before that
triumph in the City of Brotherly Love, she was lapped (and
placed last) at the Millrose
Games in the Womens 3,000
Meter Run. Was it that disappointing showing in front of
hometown family and friends
that motivated her to the most
elite class of middle-distance
runners she now finds herself
competing against?
Nope,
the soft-spoken
but confident Gallagher says.
It was right after graduation
(from Fordham) at the Harbor
Light, me and John Lovett met
to recap my college career, and
he wanted to gauge my interest
on continuing to run post-college. Lovett, who ran the leadoff leg on Manhattan Colleges
1973 NCAA Indoor Champion
Distance Medley Relay and
served as Gallaghers track
mentor at Bishop Kearney in
Brooklyn, was not trying to
push her in any specific direc-

Kerri Gallagher

tion he simply wanted her to

know a possible opportunity existed in athletics beyond
her university years. After
convincing the Harbor Lights
unshaven barkeep to switch
from the Yankee game over
to a four-digit cable channel
showing the U.S. Track and
Field Championships on a
corner-spot television, Lovett
cut to the chase. Matt Centrowitz, a former Olympic harrier and friend of his through
their shared high school alma
mater (the now-extinct Power Memorial), was operating a professional training
group out of the Washington,
D.C.-area. Gallagher, who just
accepted a position at Morgan
Stanley in Manhattan, had
two choices: follow what her
father, John, aptly labeled a
direct trajectory to business
success, or wade in the metaphoric waters of the dreaded
unknown that encapsulates a
career as a professional distance runner.

Centrowitz may have had

a relationship with Lovett
spanning five decades, but
he was no stranger to Gallagher either. In addition to
molding professional runners under the umbrella of
his D.C.-based Pacers Track
Club, he serves as the fulltime Cross Country/Track
and Field coach at American
University. When Gallagher was a senior at Kearney,
he formally recruited her to
join his college program that
he was starting to build into
regional relevance. There
are types of kids I am better
at working with right away,
admits the brash, old-school
coach. Running in Rockaway is different from running
in Santa Barbara. You have
to be tougher there, smarter
there, and be able to adapt
to different things. Gallagher hit all three of those key
qualities right on the head
which made their pairing all
but a no brainer at the time.

But it didnt work out to

Centrowitzs liking the first
time around. Citing not being ready to make a move like
that as her reason for attending nearby Fordham over
American, Gallagher went on
to have a proud career for the
Rams. There is a difference,
however, between the commitment required to win a few
individual conference races in
a small Jesuit universitys conference and the commitment
necessitated by competing at
a world-class level. To be clear,
Gallagher did not qualify for
the NCAA National Championship as an individual she
was relegated to the IC4A
meet, which for all you hoops
fans is an NIT of sorts held at
the end of each season.
Professional running was
not even on my radar at that
point. Not one bit.
This story becomes even
more compelling at this juncture, when Gallagher made
what appeared to some as a
cursory decision to pack her
things and follow I-95 due
south to what southerners call
The DMV, short for where
the DC-Maryland, and Virginia areas coalesce.
Coach Centrowitz knew
that I felt a bit unfilled with the
way my college career ended
and I felt this was an opportunity I would regret passing
up on is how Gallagher described her sentiment at the
time.
This is where, like most great
stories of success, her existence in the familiar and secure
surroundings of her hometown ended, and the challenge
of pursuing Track and Field
greatness began.
Kerri will be running in the
Womens 1500 Meter First
Round at the U.S. Olympic
Team Trials on Thursday July
7, 2016 at 6:26 p.m. PT (9:26
p.m. ET). NBC Sports Network
(7/7, 7/8) and NBC (7/10) will
be covering the entire event
live check with your local
cable provider. It will also be
available to stream online at
www.USATF.tv.

The Rockaway Times

Theyre Here!
Yep! Its official kOoK season
and theres no shortage of mayhem out in the water.
Sitting with the family and
some buddies over the weekend
at the main jetty, watching the
carnage of so many collisions
and near misses, it was painfully
obvious so many of these people

are clueless as to what surfing etiquette is and if there are any sort
of rules at all.
As for the good surfers agonizingly trying to avoid the
kOoKs flying down the face
at them, occasionally telling
that kOoK what theyre doing
wrong, only to fall on deaf ears
and the kOoKs going so far as
to say Hey, youre ruining
it for everyone going across
the wave!, it seems as though
there is no hope for us decent

surfers to get a wave alone.

I saw one guy trying to surf
- hes standing in thigh deep
water waiting for the white
water to come and then attempting to jump to his feet on
the board before the white
water arrives. Very inventive I thought, but alas he
wasnt having any luck. So
I give him a hint on how to
do it properly (thatll be $90
please!) and hes so pissed
at me hes almost frothing

at the mouth You know Ive

had surf lessons before!, at
that point I respond Then
you should get your money
back, its going to take you a
decade to figure how to do it
that way.
So for all you newbies and
frothing kOoKs, here is a guide
to the surfing rules graciously
provided by the Gotham Surf
Club & Rockaway Times.
And remember to always
PULL IN!!!!

SURFING RULES
The Surfing Rules are the most important thing you MUST learn before you set foot in the water for the first time. The surfing rules are
a set of guidelines that all surfers must abide by in order for all water users to get along and have fun, stay happy and reduce the risk
of injury. If you enter the water without learning these few surfing rules then chances are you will tick someone off, get shouted at and
worst of all, possibly hurt someone really bad or get hurt yourself.
1. Have fun, but not at the expense of the other people in the water. Its not just about you,
be aware of ALL people around you, even when youre riding a wave.
2. Don't drop in, this means don't catch a wave that someone else is already riding.
The surfer on the inside, closest to the breaking part of the wave, has right of way
3. Don't paddle through the line-up. (This means
don't paddle out where the other surfers are riding, it's very dangerous for all involved).
4. Dont ditch your board! Always hold on to your board when a wave hits you. Throwing your
board away and allowing your leg rope to do the job for you is very dangerous to the other
surfers in the water
5. Don't be a snake! A snake is a surfer who constantly paddles to the inside, or turn inside someone after they started to paddle into
a wave, and then invoke the drop in rule. In other words, try not to be greedy.
6. The surfer on the wave has right of way, if paddling out, try to stay out of the way, take the
hit from the white water rather than risk ruining another surfers wave. You would not run into
traffic, do not paddle into the line of an oncoming surfer.
7. Beginners Use common sense where crowds are an issue. If you turn up to a break that is
already heavily crowded, then consider surfing somewhere else. Adding to an already frustrated
and crowded peak won't help you or them.
8. Wear a leg rope. Occasionally you'll see a surfer in the water who is not using a leg rope, they are usually very experienced and
rarely loose control, and they are the only exception to this rule.
9. Respect, you need to give it before you get it. Both the more experienced surfers and the locals, remember this. When surfing
away from home, you are surfing in someone else's home.
10. Never use your board as a weapon or as a means of protection from a possible collision. Many beginners
will throw their boards in front of another surfer when afraid of a possible collision. This is incredibly dangerous.
These are the basic rules that have been in force for decades out in the surf. Yet for the last ten years these rules
have been broken on a regular basis, mainly by newcomers to surfing. The result is chaos, and learners have
come to be resented by the more experienced surfers. Learn these rules and apply them, become part of
the solution, rather than a part of the problem.

The Rockaway Times

By Katie McFadden

If you ever need some surf

gear, there are plenty of options in town. As part of
this weekly column, in no
particular order, well profile different surf businesses.
This week is newcomer Station RBNY.
Station RBNY may have
just opened in May, but owners, Nigel Louis and Andrew
Dima bring many years of
experience in sports retail,
business, stand-up paddelboarding and of course, surfing. With Louis bringing his
expertise in surfing and surf
brands to the table and Dima,
also co-owner of A-Team
Paddleboarding,
bringing
his SUP knowledge, the team
has turned Station RBNY into
what Dima calls a one stop
shop for everything fun in
Rockaway.
Louis, who grew up in Barbados, started surfing when
he was 10 years old. Dima
started surfing when he was
nine, but focuses more on
SUP. Both moved to Rockaway within the past four years
to be closer to the ocean.
With Louis previously working for Breakwater, the two
met in Rockaway and realized
they had similar outlooks on
what to bring to the surf shop
scene.
There are many other
surf shops and they all have
their own unique way of doing something. We have our
own twist, which is a little
different. We wanted to provide something different
to both the locals and people coming over the bridge,
Dima said. Ive been surfing in Rockaway since there
was the Secret Surf shop and
now theres so much going
on here and it hasnt even
reached its potential yet.
Theres room for everyone.
We wanted to bring in a different view on surfing and of-

Station RBNY
fer items that might not be on
other peoples radar, Louis
said. Louis brings many years
of experience in the action
sports industry and worked
for popular surf brands like
Hurley, Billabong, Quicksilver and more. Owning his
own surf shop where he could

Nigel and Andrew

bring his knowledge of good

brands has been a longtime
goal. Its been a dream of
mine since I was five to own
my own store, he said.
Station RBNYs tagline is
Surfing/
Skateboarding/
Community/ Life and they
offer things to meet each
need. They sell everything
from surf, skate and SUP
Boards and accessories and
apparel for everyone with
items like bathing suits, wetsuits, shoes, hats, t-shirts
and more. They plan to offer winter apparel in the
offseason. We offer surf/
skate products but we also
cater to people who dont
do those things, Louis said.
We dont want people having to go over the bridge to
get something, Dima added.
They also offer services like
board rentals, repairs and
locker rentals, lessons for
all sports, a hot shower and
a backyard hangout space,
which they hope to utilize
more this summer. We want
to do movie nights and host
cool surf and skate-related
events. We would love to let
people connect over their

surf sessions and tell stories

and create this community
space, kind of like the Rockaway Beach Surf Club, but
without the alcohol and tacos, Louis said.
In addition to products and
services, Station RBNY prides
itself on quality customer
service, which is clear from
the warm greetings from the
staff as soon as your walk
in. They also aim to provide knowledgeable advice.
We put service first. When
people walk in, we want
them to know what were
talking about. If they have
a question, we want to give
them the answers that will
help them become better at
their sport. We want them
to leave saying, wow, the
shop is amazing, they have
good stuff and a good at-

Page 47

mosphere. We want the customer to feel appreciated

and remember our name,
Louis said. Dima says they
also direct customers to
other shops if it helps them.
Were 50 steps from Boarders. If we dont carry a certain product, we refer people there or to another shop.
Were here to support each
other, Dima said. If we
give people more options,
we get more people coming
out here. Were looking to
improve the community as a
whole, Louis added.
Station RBNY is located
at 91-08B Rockaway Beach
Boulevard. Theyre open seven days a week from 10 a.m.
to 7 p.m.. Check out www.
stationrbny.com or call 929287-4780 for more.

Rockaway Little League Champions

AKB ROCKIES, WALSH FLIPPERS AND EMPIRE MARINERS REIGN
Three Rockaway Little League
champions were crowned earlier this week as the AKB Security
Rockies in Major Boys, the Walsh
Properties Flippers in Major Girls
and the Empire Unlimited Mariners in Minor Boys clinched division titles. Two other divisions
(Minor Girls, Pee Wee Senior)
were to be decided on Wednesday.
The Major Boys Rockies finished an improbable run by edging the Metalmen Sales Orioles,
8-6, in a thriller on Sunday. It
was a see-saw battle that saw four

games in the unpredictable

post-season tournament. The
fourth-seeded Metalmen Sales
Orioles won three tight games in
the losers bracket to make it to
the finals. The last of these was
10-6 upset of the regular season
champions, the Conte Carpet
Royals. In that game, the Os
stunned the Royals, who allowed
the fewest runs during the season, by pushing three runs across
in the both the first and second
innings. The Royals closed to 6-5
with a big outburst in the bottom of the fourth but the Orioles

lead changes in the first three

innings. In the home third, the
Rockies Mike Light put his team
ahead for good with a two-run
blast over the left field fence. The
champs added three more in the
bottom of the fourth inning to
seemingly put the game away.
The Orioles did not fly off, however. After closing within two runs,
the Metalmen squad loaded the
bases in the sixth inning. Johnny Mahoney got a game-ending
strikeout to seal the championship. Chris McElhinney was 2-2
with a walk, two runs scored and
two RBIs for the Rockies. Nicholas Donohue and Mike Light
both stole home. Light had three
RBIs. Nick Rodgers turned a critical, unassisted double play with
the Orioles rallying in the fifth inning. Aiden Harkins was 2-3 with
three RBIs for the Orioles.
The Major Boys division was
Rockaway Little Leagues most
competitive during the regular
season. Five teams had a shot
the pennant so it is not surprising that five different teams won

answered with a back-breaking

four-run rally in their next at bat.
The top two regular season
teams met in the finals of the
Minor Boys division but where
the Empire Unlimited Mariners
had a machine-like march to
the championship round, the El
Caribe Caterers Reds took a more
interesting route. The Reds were
upset by the Ozane Pest Management Orioles in a classic pitching
duel, 2-1. In the losers bracket
final, the Reds returned the favor
by edging the O-Os 9-8 in eight
innings. The Reds rallied for two
runs in the fifth inning to tie the
game 5-5 but looked done when
the Orioles plated three runs in
the top of the eighth. In an amazing do-or-die performance, the
El Caribe gang scored four runs
to walk off with a stunning win.
The Reds magic could not withstand the Mariners power game
Tuesday night as Empire Unlimited won the championship with
a convincing 13-4 victory to cap
its undefeated post-season.
The Major Girls division fea-

tured many competitive games

during the regular season but
at the end of the sixth inning,
the Graybeards Bonnies or the
Walsh Properties Flippers usually walked off victorious so it is
no surprise that these two teams
met in the Championship round
and that their series went the distance. The Flippers entered game
one needing to sweep the series
due to the Bonnies victory over
them earlier in the tournament.
With their backs to the walls,
the Walsh ladies put up crooked
numbers in the second and third
innings to grab an 8-3 lead. The
Graybeard girls closed to 9-6 and

loaded the bases in the last inning but Flipper pitcher Margaret Murray coolly worked out of
the jam to nail down the win. In
a season where impressive pitching often highlighted the close
contents, the finale was decided
with bats and gloves. Both teams
scored almost every half inning.
The top-seeded Bonnies trailed
6-5 in the fourth inning when
the Flippers broke it open with a
seven-run frame. The difference
in the game was fielding. Both
teams hit the ball well but the
Walsh Properties squad turned
several line drives into hard outs
en route to a 14-9 victory.
