NYC CELEBRATES NATIONAL BIKE TO WORK DAY

TransAlt, Commissioners, Borough Presidents roll out the red carpet for bike commuters

May is Bike Month in New York City, and festivities culminate today in celebration of National
Bike to Work Day. Transportation Alternatives is co-hosting nine pit stops across the five
boroughs to support bike commuters with breakfast and promote safe, civic-minded riding.
There are rides and events celebrating National Bike to Work Day in 43 states and the District of
Columbia this year.

Today’s events include breakfasts in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx sponsored
by their respective Borough Presidents, and even a bicycle-powered smoothie machine at Martha
Stewart’s Whole Living pit stop on the Hudson River. At a press conference at the Times Square
commuter pit stop, Transportation Alternatives joined four City Agency Commissioners, Times
Square Alliance, SELF Magazine and GreeNYC’s “Birdie” to welcome cyclists commuting down
the Broadway bike lanes and encourage New Yorkers to ride to work.

Bicycling is New York City’s fastest-growing mode of transportation, with bike commuting
growing 26% between 2008 and 2009 according to the NYC DOT. And there’s even more
potential for growth: 75% of driving trips in New York City are less than five miles—an easy
distance for most people to bike.

“If ever bike commuting has seemed out of reach, now is the time to give it a try. New York City is
adding bike lanes faster than anywhere else in the country. Tens of thousands of our neighbors
started riding last year alone. What more reason could anyone need to get on a bike on a beautiful
day like today?” asks Paul Steely White, Executive Director of Transportation Alternatives.

“Every day is Bike to Work Day in New York City. With more than 650 lane miles of routes on
streets and in parks and with increasing bike parking options across the city, more and more New
Yorkers are discovering that bicycling is a safe, convenient and fun way to get around,” says NYC
DOT Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan, whose agency led an organized ride from Brooklyn to
Manhattan to mark National Bike to Work Day.

"Biking has a tremendous range of benefits," says Dr. Thomas Farley, New York City Health
Commissioner. "The exercise is good for your physical and mental health, and since you don't
burn fossil fuels you protect the environment and help protect everyone else's lungs. So get out
and try it--and keep yourself safe by wearing a helmet and knowing the rules of the road."

"New York City parks are home to over 100 miles of greenways, or car-free paved bike paths - just
yesterday, we opened the newest half-mile along the Hudson River, making it easier than ever to
bike to work," says Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe. "Thanks to partnerships with the
Department of Transportation, advocates such as Transportation Alternatives and their
sponsors for elevating biking as a great form of exercise and a sustainable way to travel around
New York City. I urge everyone to always wear a helmet and please be respectful of other users
sharing the path--pedestrians, runners and bladers."

"New York City is a great taxi and for-hire vehicle town, but it's also one of the truly great
bicycling cities of the world, and I am so proud to celebrate this fact today," says Taxi
Commissioner David Yassky. "As TLC commissioner, I will leverage every opportunity to make
our driver licensees aware of cyclists to maximize their sharing the road safely."

“SELF Magazine encourages our six million readers to bike more in order to be active, have fun,
save money and help lower their carbon footprint all at the same time, and Bike-to-Work Day is a
perfect opportunity to remind everyone that you don’t have to be a fitness cyclist to love
commuting by bike,” says Lucy Danziger, Editor-in-Chief of SELF Magazine and author of The
Nine Rooms of Happiness. “As a bike commuter myself, it’s an invigorating, inspiring way to start
my work day, and I love trying to do it at least a few days a week. SELF is thrilled to partner with
Transportation Alternatives and the Times Square Alliance for the Times Square Pit Stop – we
hope everyone will pedal on over!”

“This last year, Times Square became far more pedestrian friendly—now we’re helping to make it
more pedal friendly by encouraging people to go green and bike to work,” says Tim Tompkins,
President of Times Square Alliance.

“The offices of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia are right next to the Hudson River Park bike
path, and many of us love biking to work along that glorious route,” says Alex Postman, Editor-In-
Chief of Whole Living: Body+ Soul magazine. “We are excited to offer New York City bike
commuters free breakfast, as well as a chance to win some of the gear and products featured in
our June city-cycling feature ‘Wheel Life,’ including two free bicycles! We hope events around the
city and country will show the public how convenient, enjoyable, and planet-friendly bike-
commuting can be.”

National Bike to Work Day in New York City is sponsored by Transportation Alternatives, Red
Jacket Orchards, SELF Magazine, Times Square Alliance, CLIF Bar and the Borough Presidents of
Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and The Bronx. More details at BikeMonthNYC.org.
