    Vijayalaya rose to power in 848 CE by capturing Thanjavur from the Mutharaiyar dynasty during a war between the Pandyas and Pallavas. He established the Medieval Chola dynasty. His son, Aditya I, further expanded the Chola kingdom by attacking and annexing the Pallava kingdom around 903 CE, earning the title "Rajakesarivarman who overran Tondainadu". Aditya I was succeeded by Parantaka I and maintained friendly relations with the Chera kingdom through marrying his son to the Chera king's daughter.
