Family #5 -- Husbands and Wives (Ephesians

5:22-33)
I. Wives -- submit to the husband (v. 22-24).
A. The example -- Christ is the head of the church.
Believers are to be moving at the impulses of the Lord.
B. The experience
1. submit -- his will prevails over her will because she
was made as a helper to man (Gen 2:18).
a. The order is important: Adam first; Eve next.
b. Submission is a basic attitude of the Christian
life (v. 21).
2. as to the Lord -- in doing what he wants she is doing
what the Lord wants (see Col 3:24).
3. in everything -- in accordance with proper
obedience.
Not in politics, faith or employment (see Acts 4 5).
II. Husbands -- love the wife (v. 25-29).
A. The example -- Christ loved the church.
1. He made her His by taking away her sin.
2. He made her glorious by giving her holiness.
B. The experience:
1. just as Christ...loved... -- sacrificial.
2. as their own bodies...nourish and cherish it -thoughtful care.
Husbands...dwell with them with understanding
(1 Pet 3:7).
3. he who loves his wife loves himself -- reciprocate.
III. Believers: we are united with Christ (v. 30-32, a spiritual
union).
A. It is as if we are made from Him.
B. It is as if we are married to Him.
What Christ has brought us to through His death on the cross is an
intimate relationship with God.
