Collection Development LSC 530
Collection Development LSC 530
Justification
The library that was chosen for our collection development assignment was the East Smithfield
Public Library. This library is one of two libraries in the town that serve the town of Smithfield and
surrounding communities. The area that was chosen to weed was a non-fiction area in the j section, which
is an area in the childrens department that has not been weeded in a long time. The Childrens Librarian
who is new to this library (two years) has weeded other areas, but has not yet weeded the j non-fiction
section. We decided to focus on a particular area in the non-fiction section and chose the part on planets
(523 to 523.5). There have been several changes recently in science in this area (for example, Pluto is not
considered part of our solar system) and we wanted to make sure the information in these titles was
current. We were able to look at 41 books in that small section.
Evaluation Tools
We evaluated this part of the collection using the CREW Weeding Manual, which incorporates the
ideas of continuous review, evaluation, and weeding all into one process that helps remove outdated and
low-circulating materials from the collection, while also helping to identify what new items need to be
purchased to fill the gaps. Much of this non-fiction section is outdated where many titles are over five
years old so they needed to be reviewed, and others are over ten years old and are inaccurate due to
changes and discoveries in science. In our evaluation and discussion on these items we also used the
MUSTIE factors to help decide if items needed to be weeded and then replaced based on copyright date,
number of circulations, condition, relevant information, and current accuracy. For this part of the collection
of space and astronomy anything that has a copyright of more than five years ago should be reviewed and
if it has not circulated in more than three years can probably be weeded. Many changes have occurred
recently in these areas so titles and items that include Pluto as a planet or that dont discuss expeditions
relating to Mars should be weeded. Topics that have not changed in this area still need current technology
and relevant information to be accurate for readers. We also used what we know about the library, patron
interests, and circulating materials when deciding how to update this section. All the items that were
evaluated were in print form so that column from our chart was removed. Only up-to-date, relevant, fairly
current items were checked for the number of times circulated since we knew we would be replacing some
older items, and weeding out-of-date, irrelevant items with incorrect information. Overall we evaluated 41
total items, where 27 will be weeded and possibly updated, and 14 items will be kept.

The titles in the above chart are a series about the planets put out by Scholastic. They are called A True
Book and are geared for children in grades 3 to 5. This series would be a good addition to the collection
and they would be able to replace the planet books that are in the collection from 2008.
