ThetaskIchoseforthiscriticalpieceonassessmentanalysisandinterpretationisto
improvestudentunderstandingofmathematicalconceptsinfirstgrade.ThecriteriaIwilluseto
helpwiththisanalysisisDibelsMath.
DibelsMath
SinceIwillbelookingatkindergartendatatobetterimprovemyinstructionforthose
studentswhomIwillhavethenextyearinfirstgrade,IwillexplainhowDibelsMathis
administeredinbothkindergartenandfirstgrade.Inbothgradesthestudentstaketheteststhree
timesayear,beginning,middle,andendofyear.Theycompletethistestinthecomputerlab
withthecomputerteacherduringcomputer(specials)time.Manyteachersdonotwanttogive
upplantimetoattendtheclassperiodwhentheirstudentsaretakingthetest,however,Ichoose
tobeapartofthisprocessandalsowantthemtoknowthatIamthereasthesilentcheerleader.
IfeelitmakesadifferencethatIamtherewhiletheyaretestingandstudentsappreciatethatI
careabouttheirprogress.

SinceOperationsandAlgebraicThinkingisassessedinbothkindergartenandfirstgradeand
thatitisthelowestconcept,Ifeelthisisthebestplacetodirectmyattentionandworkon
studentgrowthinthisarea.Idecidedtolookfurtherintothisareabybreakingitdownby
individualstudent.
ReflectingonlastyearsfirstgradeDibelsMathscores(20142015),Operationsand
AlgebraicThinkingwastheareathattheystruggledwiththemostatthebeginningoftheyear.
Thefirstgreenbargraphshowsthenumberofstudentsandhowmanyproblemstheyaccurately
answeredoutofthirteentotalproblems.AfterfurtheranalysisInoticedapatternofweaknessin
theareaofOperationsandAlgebraicThinking.Themajorityofthestudentsanswered8/13
correctandnoneofthestudentsansweredmorethan10/13correct.
Thefinalbargraphshowstheimprovementsmadefromthebeginningoftheyeartothe
endoftheyearintheareaofOperationsandAlgebraicThinking.Thenumberofquestionson
theassessmentincreasedfrom13to17questions.Atthebeginningoftheyear,noneofthe
studentsanswered11questionscorrect,attheendoftheyear
all
studentsanswered11ormore
correctlywithtwostudentsgettingthemallcorrect.
NextSteps
Thereasonbehindthistremendousprogressisduetotheimplementationofmath
journalsandmathtalkwherestudentsweregivenmanyopportunitiestobecriticalthinkers.I
alsoapproachedmyprincipalandcurriculumdirectoraboutgroupingmystudentsformathtime
afterChristmasbreak.Iknewtherewasahugelearninggappresent,andIwantedtobeableto
closethatgap,butalsochallengethosewhowereready.
Baseduponthedataanalysisforthisnextyear(20152016)thenextstepsIwilltakeas
aneducatortogetallstudentstogrowintheareaofmathematicalthinking,especially
OperationsandAlgebraicthinking,Iwillcontinuetoutilizedailymathtalkandmathjournals.I
willalsocontinuetoseparatethestudentsintoflexiblegroupstobetterreachtheirneedsasa
learnerwhetherthatbetoexplaininmanyandvariouswaysortoofferadditionalchallengesto
extendtheirlearning.
ForthestudentswhodidnotgetitIwillensurethatIhavethemexplaintheirthinking
andwhentheygetstuck,Iwillfindtools/resourcestohelpguidethemtofullunderstanding
(suchasmanipulatives,hundredsnumberchart,oranumberline).Forthosethatdogetit,Iwill
offerchallengessuchasadditionalcriticalthinkingpiecesandperformancetaskstohelppush
themtothenextlevelofcriticalthinkingwithinmathematics.
