Where My Name Comes From
Its not Britney, Brittnee, or Britny, but it's Brittany. On May 4, 2000 at approximately
7:10pm I, Brittany Nashay Spain, was brought in this world. Ive asked my parents Why
Brittany? Who choose my name? It's so plain and boring. My mom says that my siblings named
me and she likes it because at the time Britney Spears was popular. No one in my family name is
Brittany, but my parents were going to name Shirley, which was my paternal grandmother's
name. I'm actually glad they did not name me that because Shirley is an old name. According
to Howmanyofme.com there are only eight people in the United States named Brittany Spain
and 188,000 people with the first name Brittany. My name is not as popular as I thought it
was, surprisingly I am the only person named Brittany in my school, but that's only out of 200
people. Brittany is derived from the word Britannia, a Roman goddess. The goddess was
displayed as a beautiful women wearing the helmet of a centurion, and wrapped in the white
garment. I read on Ancestory.com that the last name Spain originated from Ireland. To think
that I maybe part Irish is exciting. My aunt said that our ancestors are from Cameroon.
On whatisthemeaningofname.com the analysis of the name Brittany fit me so well. It
said Im an indecisive person and hesitation is the biggest part of my life, which I find to be true.
It also stated I have a hard time expressing my feelings and I'm uncommunicative. In other
languages such as; Hungarian and Italian my name is Gabriella. I like that name because it
sounds angelic. The name Brittany is old fashioned, it was popular in the 1990s. People tell me
that I do not look like a Brittany, instead I look like a Ashley or Nicole. One time in the
6th grade my friend told me that my name is white and they never met a black person named

Brittany. I thought to myself, So I have to be white in order for my name to be Brittany and
What does it mean to have a white name?. Every time I tell someone my name they say, Like
Britney Spears or Are you from Spain?.
Growing up I had multiple nicknames. My parents would call me Brit Brit and my
brother would call me Britt. I did not like the nicknames so I tried to change it to Honey
Bunches of Oats, but it did not stick. My sister calls me Nashay , which is my middle name.
She calls me that because she likes it more than Brittany. I personally also like it more than
Brittany. Don't get me wrong, I do like my name, but it's just so old school and boring. I
actually prefer to be called Nashay. My mom got my middle from her god sister, who named
her child Nashay. She liked as a middle name rather than a first name. Nashay is a rare name
in the United States, it means to be fearless.
I wish my parents would have named me Britian Canada-Asia Spain or Dezire.
Britain Canada-Asia Spain is a unique name & it's so beautiful. There are little to no people
with that name is the United States. I like that name because it's four countries in one name.
Dezire is pronounced like desire but the s is replaced with a z, which I also find unique
and beautiful. Because I like the name Dezire so much, I'm going to put that as my daughter
middle name when I get older.
