WhenyousitdownafteryourefinishedregisteringyourselfattheTOEFLcenterandtheexaminer
allowsyoutostarttheexam,youregoingtoseetheinstructionsforthereadingsection.Theyregoing
tobereadoutloudtoyou.Thatsgoingtogiveyousometimetopsychologicallyprepareyourselfand
becomecomfortablewithwhatsgoingtocomenext:theallpowerfulreadingsection.

Aftertheinstructionsarefinished,yourfirstreadingwillappear.Itwillconsistof700wordsandit
willtakeupthewholescreenofyourmonitor,soyourenotgoingtoseeanyquestions.Youwillneed

containapproximately700wordsandrequireyoutoanswer14questionswithin20minutes.Youll
seeatimerontheupperrighthandcornerofyourscreen.Itstheretohelpmakesurethatyoudont
spendtoomuchtimeonanyonequestion.

Thetimerisgoingtocountfrom60or80minutesdownto0(dependingonwhetherornotyouget
thatextraexperimentalreading[readingnumber4],whichdoesn'tcountonyourTOEFLscore).

Oncethetimerhits0,youranswerswillberecordedandyouwillmoveontothelisteningsection
nevertoreturntothereadingagain.Consequently,tosucceed,youmustlookatthattimerand
monitoryourtimeasyouanswerthequestionsbeforetimerunsout.

TOEFLreadingtiming

Nowforthegoodstuff.Asyouanswer,youwillalwaysbeabletojumptodifferentquestionsthat
you'vealreadycompleted.Forexample,letssayyoureansweringquestions1,2,3,4,andthen5.
Then,youthinktoyourself,

Whenyoufinishthelastquestion(number42or56dependingonwhetheryouhave3or4readings),
youregoingtoseeachartthatshowsyouthequestionsthatyouansweredanddidntanswer.Youll
beabletodoubleclickonaquestiontojumpdirectlytoitinthereading.Thiswillgiveyouachance
toreviewquestionsyouskippedorwanttodoublecheck.

We'reexplainingthistoletyouknowthatyoucanbouncearoundonceyoufinishthereadingto
doublecheckyouranswers.But,ofcourse,welllearntobefocusedandexactasweanswersothatwe
wontneedtodothis.

Whenyoufinishthefirstreading,youregoingtomoveontoanotherreadingandsoonandsoon

intotimingstrategy.

First,youdontwanttoreadthewholepassagebeforeyoustartansweringthequestionsifyoudo,it
willbeaveryinefficientandtimewastingwaytoread.

Instead,acquireabasicideaofthereadingandprepareyourmindforwhatyouregoingtoreadabout
byfirstreadingthetitle.Then,readthefirstsentence(whichistheallimportanttopicsentence)of
everyparagraph.Dothistogetaquickintroductiontothereadingbeforeyoureaditindetail.You
shouldcompletethiswithin1minute.

anideaofwhatitsaskingabout.Then,startreadingthepassagefromtheverybeginninginsearchof
theanswertothatquestionusingthestrategiesyou'lllearnaboutbelow.Inthisway,youwill
concentrateonlyonwhatsimportantandwhatwillearnyouyourhighestTOEFLreadingscore
possible.

Onceyouanswerquestionnumber1,goontoquestionnumber2inthesameway.TheTOEFL
questionsproceedinchronologicalorder,sotheanswertonumber1isinthebeginningofthepassage
andtheanswertonumber12istowardstheend,whichisnice.

Aswediscussedearlier,timingisimportantanditsveryeasyforstudentstorunoutoftime.Follow
thisguidelinecarefullyandyouwillNEVERhavethattroubleagain.That'sright:youwillNEVER
