Choosing home healthcare might be the

best choice for you or your loved one but
how do you know for sure? This quick primer
on home care can help you make that very
important decision. Elders sometimes need
a bit of help. Whether that means simple
reminders to take their medication or
something as significant as 24-hour medical
monitoring, there is a solution designed to
meet all of their unique needs.
The Top Seven Considerations

for Home care
Consider the following seven reasons
why home care might be the best choice
for you, your family and your loved one:
What Kind of Care is Best

for Your Loved One?
There are many kinds of care available
for elderly patients. Some will require
occasional light help, while others might
need round-the-clock nursing care. Knowing
your options can help you choose the best
one to fit the needs of everyone involved.
Skilled Nursing Facility. Also
known as a nursing home, a skilled nursing
facility offers round-the-clock care for
patients who need constant monitoring.
Assisted Living. Assisted living
facilities offer custodial care, or help with the
basics of day-to-day life. Grooming, bathing,
dressing and meal preparation are just a few
of the ways assisted living can help.
Home Care. Care at home can cover a
wide range of assistance and services. From
help with occasional grocery shopping to help
with activities of daily living or skilled nursing
care, there is an home care option available.
Home healthcare is a wonderful choice
for any loving family member who is in the
process of searching for a provider to assist
with the health, safety and personal well being
of an elderly loved one. When searching for a
permanent residence for an elder, there is no
better choice than where the elderly loved
one is most comfortable: their own home.
Independence Matters. With home

care, patients are encouraged to be as
independent as possible. With a few changes
for safety, such as grab bars and anti-slip rugs,
freedom to move around the comfort of their
own home is very possible with home care.
One-on-One Attention: Another very
important quality of home healthcare is the
one-on-one attention that the elder will
receive. At home, there is complete attention
on the elder. This is important because it
creates a special bond between the elder
and the caregiver. At many nursing homes
or assisted living facilities, the caregivers
must care for a number of elders so there is
not enough one-on-one time to create this
special relationship.
Comfort and Safety. The most
common reason for home healthcare
is the comfort, safety and stress-free
environment that the elder is used to. As
the elderly loved one gets older, they will
undoubtedly feel connected to the place
where they spent the most time. Their
home is suited to their specific wants and
needs and they can feel relaxed and safe. It
is also important that the elders family has

Family Involvement. Those who are
cared for at home have the advantage of
open visiting hours. Family members can
stop in and help out as often as necessary
without concerns about intruding on the
care of others. In times of illness, the
presence of family members can improve
a patients spirits and make everyone feel
more in-control of the situation. Unlike
nursing homes or retirement centers,
elders who receive home healthcare are
able to be involved in their own home care,
which helps them feel involved and useful.
Continuity of Care. Home care is
often provided by the same caregiver or team
or caregivers, so they always know what
kind of care has been given or is needed. The
patient can also keep their same doctor, so
continuity of care stays intact.
Safe and Personal. The risks of
infection are lessened when a patient
uses home care. The one-on-one care and
personal attention also ensures that all
your loved ones needs can be met quickly
and without the red tape often found in
hospitals or nursing homes.
Lower Costs. Home care providers are
usually less expensive than nursing homes
or assisted living facilities. With home care,
you also have the option of hiring someone
for only the hours when your loved one
needs help the most. Lower costs also
offer peace of mind to those elders who are
concerned about the financial burden their
care might place on their family.

Are Baby Boomers the Key to the Single-Family Market?

One of the most important keys to

todays single-family housing market is
homeowners who were born before the
first-ever episode of Star Trek aired in the
1960s. Today, more than 50 years later,
Baby Boomers and other homeowners over
the age of 55 control almost two-thirds of
the nations home equity about $8 trillion.
There are also more than 67 million 55+
homeowners.
Whether they decide to move from
their current homes or age in place, the
cumulative impact of their decisions on
63 percent of 55+ers
prefer to age in place.
mortgage demand, affordable housing
supplies and the housing options
available to millennials and other aspiring
homeowners will be substantial.
To
better
understand
these
opportunities and challenges, we launched
the Freddie Mac 55+ Survey. Together with
GfK, we surveyed nearly 4,900 homeowners
born before 1961, including a mix of men,
women, Hispanics, African-Americans,
Asians and Caucasians. We wanted to know
their current housing situations, their plans
and their willingness to help their grown
children become homeowners. Heres what
we found out:
The American Dream is working.
Consistent majorities tell us they are
very satisfied with their current homes
(64 percent), communities (59 percent)
and quality of life (54 percent). Nearly
90 percent of the respondents say people
their age should own a home.
Homeownership is part of a comfortable
retirement. Seventy-six percent of
homeowners are confident they will have
a comfortable retirement. These feelings
are echoed across racial lines and shared
by 55+ homeowners who are still working
as well as those who are retired, and the 44
percent of homeowners we surveyed who
have a mortgage.
Homeownership makes financial sense.
Consistent majorities say homeownership
makes financial sense for married people
with children (96 percent) and without
children (85 percent) as well as single
people with children (79 percent) and
without children (53 percent). What's

more, nearly 25 percent of the respondents
say they have given down payment
assistance to someone.
Sixty three percent of 55+ers prefer to
age in place. This works out to an estimated
42 million homeowners who dont plan
to move. About a quarter (23 percent)
indicate they would need major renovations
to keep their homes accessible and a third
(34 percent) would pay for improvements
by refinancing their mortgage or taking out
a second loan or home equity line of credit.
Twenty seven million 55+ers would
prefer to move at least one more time.
Although movers are in the minority, it's
a big minority. According to the survey,
nearly 40 percent of all homeowners 55+
would like to move at least once more if
they had complete control over it. This isn't
just about downsizing to a rental or nursing
home; 19 million plan to buy a home and
nearly 8 million expect to move within the
next four years. What's more, half of the
19 million likely movers expect to buy less
expensive homes.
These are big numbers with the potential

to tighten homebuying competition in the
housing market, especially for millennials
and other first-time homebuyers. They also
have the potential to generate significant
new demand for mortgage credit.
Whether the borrower is financing
age-in-place renovations or buying a new
house, even a relatively modest increase
in lending to 55+ homeowners could add
trillions of dollars in new originations in a
relatively short time.
One way or another, the Baby Boomers
housing decisions over the next few years
will take our market to brand-new places.

Family dynamics in the dementia journey

Are you the bossy big sister who knows
it all or the youngest son who walks to the
beat of your own drum? Not surprisingly, a
persons position in the family can have a
significant impact on caregiver roles. Add to
that the variations in todays family makeupblended families, second spouses,
unmarried partners or same-sex partners
plus individual beliefs, personalities and
family history and you have a recipe for
a communication disaster if youre not all
on the same page when it comes to caring
for a loved one with Alzheimers disease or
other dementia. Whats a family unit to do?
When a family member needs care,
it becomes even more important to find
ways to improve communication and
stay focused on providing the best care
possible. Not everyone is able or willing to
play a role in caring for the family member.
Sometimes the spouse who provides
day-to-day care is not willing to accept
assistance from adult children. Mom may
not want to give up what she believes to
be her main responsibility in caring for her
the concerns and identify where family

members agree and disagree. Decide how
to resolve the differences while keeping
in mind whats best for the person with
dementia. It may be necessary to hold
more than one meeting.

husband. Dad may not want to be criticized

for not providing care the right way.
Its important to take time to consider
the other persons perspective on
caregiving. The assumptions we make
can cause misunderstandings and hurt
feelings. It takes a concerted effort to put
the needs of the person with dementia first.
What is best for him or her needs to take
precedence over any family disagreement.
A family meeting is a great way to define
what the caregiving needs are, discuss
concerns and issues and develop an action
plan.
Develop a written plan of what

each person is willing to do and when
each task will be done. Can individual
family members take on tasks like grocery
shopping, household chores, providing
respite care, transportation to doctors
appointments and running errands? Allow
family members to decide what tasks they
can or cannot do and determine whether
in-home services can be used to fill in.
Remember, not everyone will be willing
to help out in ways we think they should
and thats okay. Family members need to
recognize that each person brings different
strengths and weaknesses to the caregiving
journey.
Consider using a facilitator and
meet at a neutral location. Family
meetings are not always easy and honest
differences of opinion will occur. It can be
easy for meetings to get off track or past
conflicts can arise. A facilitator can help
keep the focus on the person who needs
care.
Open communication and acceptance
are vitally important along the caregiver
journey. Frank and honest discussions
can help reduce misunderstandings and

Theres No Better Time to Prepare for the Future than Today
Whether you are 25 or 65, there is no

better time than now to start planning for
future health care needs.
When people think about healthcare,
they often think of doctors visits, hospital
stays, perhaps therapy. However, if you
find yourself dealing with an illness, injury,
or recovery, you may qualify for in-home
health care. In-home health care brings
skilled care like nursing and therapy to
you. For individuals who want to remain at
home, this type of care can be essential.
Also, many people dont realize that
as they age, they may need supportive
care like help with dressing and bathing,
transportation or medication management.
These kinds of non-medical services
are usually not covered by insurance
or Medicare, so planning ahead is very
important.
It is also important to think about where
you want to live as you grow older. If your
goal is to remain at home think about
ways to make it safer for you as you age.

home, do you know your options?
And while it can be difficult to think
about, planning for end-of-life is as

or assistance with daily activities in the
home. For that type of coverage you need
long-term care insurance, which can vary
in cost based on your age, the policy you
choose and coverage you select.
Finally, make sure you have the
conversation with your family. Talk to your
loved ones about your wishes. More than
75% of parents have never discussed their
preferences with their adult children. Adult
children are often reluctant to initiate this
type of conversation, and parents are often
resistant as well, so understanding and
patience is paramount. Remember, your
family is your home team, and to succeed
everyone needs to be on the same page.
Work with your family and complete
an advance directive. Advance directives
are documents that lay out your wishes
in regards to health care and designate
someone who can make medical and/or
financial decisions for you in the event you
cannot speak for yourself.

it would be if something were to happen
and no one was prepared. You dont have
to discuss everything at once. This type
of conversation isnt a one-time thing. It
is continuous and you should revisit it as
things change.
Some important questions to help you
get started:
In the event I become incapacitated,
who do I want making medical/
financial decisions for me? Do they
know what I would want?
What are my ideal aging circumstances? Where do I see myself living, at
home, retirement community, somewhere else?
Is my home senior friendly? What can
I do now to make my home safer for
me as I age?
If I do need medical care, where do I
go? What are my options?
If I were terminally ill, where would I
want to spend my time? Who would I
want to be with?
How will I pay for my care as I age? Do
I have long-term care insurance? What
will my insurance/Medicare cover?
Dont put off planning because it seems
far away. Make sure the people you love
know what your wishes are. There are
community resources at your disposal; you
just have to find them. In addition there
are wonderful, high quality home health
and hospice agencies out there that can
help you transition from one stage of life
to the next. Start a care-provider list to
keep handy in the event you ever need it.
Research home health care. Plan to visit
assisted living and other care facilities and
start collecting information. Check out
community resources. Ask your doctor,
friends, and family for recommendations.

less stressful in the event you ever need
care.

We all know the phrase, use it or lose it.

Many of us begin to worry as we get older that we
might be losing it. We forget names, lose things
and have trouble keeping up with constantlychanging technology. Sometimes we go into
another room in our house and forget why we
are there. As we get older , we may worry about
our memory, especially when we hear stories in
the news about Alzheimers disease numbers
rising. You may ask yourself if it is something
to be concerned about. Often times the answer
is no. It may very well be normal for your age.
By the time we are 55, weve met a lot of
people, so recalling names can become more
challenging. For those who have never been
good with names, they also may notice a

decrease. If its not a significant change there
is no reason to worry. We slow down as we age
both physically and mentally. The speed at
which we process information might decrease.
You may see an acquaintance in the grocery
store and you cannot remember their name but
later it comes back to you. It is likely due to the
fact that you have a lot on your mind and that
stress can cause you to draw a blank.
When it comes to technology, it may be
hard to keep up. Everything seems to be
moving faster and technology is ever changing.

have to work harder to learn new things as we
grow older. Although it may take more effort
to learn new technology, social media, new
computer programs and games, this can also
help to strengthen our minds and build new
connections in our brains. This can help build
resiliency and potentially delay the onset of
deteriorating diseases that may cause dementia.
Now when you walk into the kitchen but have
forgotten why you are there, its probably ice
cream that you are looking for. Well, at least thats
what it is for me. We all do that from time to time.
Between the couch and the refrigerator, you had
other things on your mind. By the time you arrive
at your destination, youve forgotten what you
were doing. This is very normal and is not a sign of
memory loss. Stress and worry can have an effect
on memory, and sometimes we just arent paying
attention and have gotten distracted along the way.
Although the number of people with
dementia is growing, this is primarily due to
the fact that we are living longer. According
to the Alzheimers Association, over 5 million
Americans have Alzheimers disease or other
dementia. The expectation is that these
numbers will more than double in the next 30
years. We are beginning to wake up to the fact
that we need to think about our brain health not
only after age 50, but also throughout our life.
For some time researchers have been looking
at lifestyle factors that increase or decrease
the risk of developing dementia. Although it
is important to look closely at who conducted
the study and how it was conducted before
changing your routines, it is safe to say that
good nutrition - along with physical and mental
exercise - is key to good brain health.
Does this mean crossword puzzles and
computer games will keep you from developing
dementia? No, it does not. But, by keeping your
brain active, learning new things, socializing and
challenging yourself, you are increasing your
chances of maintaining your brain health as you
age. Maybe its worth trying the new Pokmon
game after all? Or maybe learning something
new that appeals to you.
Other tips to improve brain health include:
eat foods high in antioxidants and omega
3s, maintain a healthy weight, reduce added
sugars, have purpose in your life and manage
your stress.

Aging & Disability Resource Center (ADRC) &
the Madison School & Community Recreation
(MSCR) organizations are collaborating to
bring a six part brain health series to Madison
area beginning in September, 2016. Local
experts will share information about a brain
health, lifestyle, exercise, effects of sleep,
nutrition, music and stress reduction benefits
of mindfulness. Contact the ADRC at 608-2407400 to learn more. Registration is required for
