Abstract
This worksheet contains important questions on the chapter with solutions and we've taken care to include all the important types of questions.
Each question in this worksheet is unique. Document was originally created for the subscribers of keepstudy.cu.cc

Questions :
1.Let a relation R on the set of real numbers be dened as (a,b)R 1
+ ab > 0 for all a,b . Show that R is not transitive.
We observe that (1, )R and ( ,-1)R but (1,-1) R because 1-1 =
0
R is not transitive on .
2.Show that the relation R on set of all real numbers, dened as R={(a, b) : a b }
is neither reexive nor symmetric nor transitive.
We have,
R={(a, b) : a b }, where a, b ( )
Reexivity : We observe that is not true ( , ) R and hence R
is not reexive.
Symmetry : We observe that 12 but 21 R is not symmetric.
Transitivity : We obersve that (1,-1)R and (-1, ) but (1, )R
3.Let R be a relation on the set of integer given by aRba=2 b for some
integer k. Is R an equivalence relation ?
We observe the following properties on R :
Reecivity : Let a be any integer. Then,
aRa a=2 .a
a=2 .a (Since k can have any integer values)
a = a, which is true for all aZ
R is reexive.
Symmetry : Let a,bZ such that aRb. Then,
a=2 .b
b =
2 .a bRa , since -k is an integer.
R is symmetric.
Transitivity : Let a, b, c Z such that aRb and bRc. Then,
a=2 .b (1)
and , b = 2 .e where is an integer.

Substituting this value of b in (i), we get

a=2 .2 .c = 2 = 2 .c , where n = k + is an integer.
aRc
R is transitive.
Hence, R is symmetric, reexive and transitive.
