TOASTER

SECOND YEAR
PROJECT

THE BRIEF

To redesign a toaster aimed at a particular market,

taking into consideration the user interaction, material
qualities and design details.

RESEARCH

Research consisted of looking at...

A product disassembly - to see how toasters are assembled and
understand the components of a toaster.
A product comparison - to discover the similarities and differences
between other toasters on the market.
Brand Research - looking into the company that is Lamborghini
and key elements that makes them so recognisable.

BRAND RESEARCH
Some research was undergone to understand
the brand further in order to make a toaster that
resembles Lamborghini.
Within the research there are several words used
to describe Lamborghini to help understand what
they are about:
Masculine
Powerful
Iconic
Aerodynamic
Angular
Stealthy
Passion
Flare
Character
Pantomime (an event)
Stance
Aggressive
Taut

Inspired by the headlights

from an Aventador this
design is a two slice toaster
that aims at the basic end
of the toaster market, with a
minimal 4 heat settings and
a push down lever.
The colour relates to
what we see as the main
colour spectrum found on
Lamborghinis today.

INITIAL IDEAS

Lamborghinis are mainly

about being streamlined
and aerodynamic to be as
fast as possible through
the air. This design relates
with its sleek and fast
stance that it portrays,
alongside having the
functional aspect of a
reheat, defrost and bagel.

A different more angular

and sharp design relevant
to current Lamborghinis,
hosting a design where
the chassis rises above
the casing.
Again function is
important having the
three key features of
reheat, defrost and bagel.
The colour is a
pearlescent orange/red
that is similar to the one
seen on the Aventador.

Based on the steering wheel

shape from the Lamborghini
Huracn, this is a single
slice toaster based more
on aesthetics rather than
functionality.
A hexagonal toaster shape
has not been seen and
resembles the Lamborghini
look very well.

Reminiscent of
Lamborghini design
of being angular and
aggressive, this design
does just that. Also
introducing a Start/
Cancel button which is
something that runs in
all Lamborghinis made
today so would be wise to
include this.
The colour is something
also seen on all
Lamborghinis with the
ever popular Bright Yellow.

A development from the

design above becoming a
2 slice toaster as well as
a two-tone colour with the
Start/Cancel button. Again
this is more for aesthetics
than a functional purpose.

INITIAL IDEAS

As Lamborghini design
is based quite closely to
aeronautics this design
was inspired by jet
fighters including the
Euro Typhoon.
A very streamlined and
sleek giving a postitive
stance and shouting
itself out within the
enivronment.

INITIAL IDEAS

Inspired by many
Lamborghinis such as the
Reventn, the Aventador and
the B2 Stealth Bomber, this is
an aggresive take on a toaster
with sharp angles and a strong
and taut figure.
Alongside the aesthetics the
functionality also plays a part
with the 3 key features of
reheat, defrost and a cancel
button for the Start on the right
side of the toaster.

Another development of
the previous designs using
the risen chassis to come
out of the casing as well
include the recognisable
Lamborghini style of
aggressive lines and angles
within the design.
Again functionality is key
withe the features of reheat,
defrost and cancel with the
Start button underneath.

Mixing different design ideas as well as continuing to take inspiration from mainly the Aventador
this is the final idea. This idea collaborates the functionality and aesthetics very well with the
three key functions of defrosting, reheating and toasting a bagel, as well as having 4 heating
settings shaped in the switches found in the centre console. The Start/Cancel button is shaped
to be exact on modern Lamborghinis and the chassis is exposed completely with the outer
casings aggresive, sharp and aerodynamic design resembleming Lamborghinis today.

THE
STRIMMER
PROJECT
AN ALFA ROMEO
INSPIRED GARDEN
STRIMMER

SECOND YEAR
PROJECT

THE BRIEF

Design a garden strimmer targeted at the consumer market,

considering the visual design and structural requirements of
the strimmer. You will be required to develop creative and
innovative conceptual ideas for a new strimmer and explore an
appropriate visual language for the product.

RESEARCH

Research was conducted into strimmers to...

Find out problems with current strimmers on the market
Understand how the Ergonomics and Anthropometric data can
fix these problems
Compare strimmers on the market
Also to understand the brand of Alfa Romeo and its aesthetics

PROBLEMS WITH

STRIMMERS

Primary/Secondary Handle
The handles tend to be very basic and a very uncomfortable to hold
especially if the strimmer is being used for a long time. From experience
there is pain and discomfort in between the thumb and index finger.
The distance between the secondary and primary handle means that the
user will have to fully stretch their arm causing strain. And the secondary
handle itself tends to be small making it hard to hold, again causing
discomfort.
Shaft
Majority of consumer strimmers on the market tend to have short shafts,
and this can cause back pain with users, a lot of them do not have
adjustable shafts or is long enough to make it comfortable for the user.
Cable Length
Some cables tend to run about 6m long and wrapping them up after
can be a problem as well as the length itself and from user feedback
normally and extension cable to be used if their garden was long. There
is also the hazard of trimming the cable line as it interferes quite often.
Guard and Spool
The guard is to protect the users feet, however in some cases the guard
can be quite small and not protect the user at all.
The spool however can be very difficult to change therefore a bump
feed system would be ideal to make it easier to release the string.

ERGONOMICS & ANTHROPOMETRICS

1.

This shows how the user is holding the two handles.

The right hand is on the trigger at all times when in
use and the left hand is on the secondary handle for
extra stability. The distance between each hand is
approximately 30cm giving an even and safe distance
so that the two hands do not interrupt each other.

2.

This shows the ideal distance between the feet and the
guard of the strimmer. This is important as the guard is
what protects the feet from stones and objects flying
off when trimming. The distance here is approximately
40cm as the guard is further out than the secondary
handle. Thisis a safe distance if anything was to fly out
from the strimmer.

This is the angle that the users arm is at when using the
strimmer. It is slightly more than 90 which is comfortable
for the user as the arms are usually straight which puts strain
on the shoulder. This is the angle that the strimmer should
allow on the arm as it is the most comfortable angle when
dealing with the weight and vibrations of the strimmer.

4.

This shows the user has good posture when using the
strimmer, his back is straight which means there is no pain
because the height of the strimmer is good for the user.
However, some users will need adjustability depending on
their height and this will need to taken into consideration.

BRAND RESEARCH
For the aesthetics of the product I have decided
to make this a branded strimmer, a major
company moving out into the home/garden
market. Ive made sure that it was a company
that hasnt thought about going into this market,
and that company is Alfa Romeo.
To help me understand the aesthetics of Alfa
Romeo, I have done research into what they
are about and a few words describe them very
clearly:
Unique
Exciting
Loud
Fast
Art
Aggressive
Small
Aerodynamic
Beautiful
Italian
Passionate

INITIAL IDEAS

Circular handle
means it is
easier and more
comfortable to
hold, along with the
switch to be right by
the fingers.

The colour green is an ideal

colour for the garden but is
a rare colour found on Alfa
Romeos so mixing red adds the
element of the brand. Even if its
very minimal.

3 posiitions for the

secondary handle allows
more comfortability for
the user.

Rectangular handle held with two

handles to take away the back pain,
as well as having a start button by
pressing 1 and 2 to trigger it.

Held with both hands so that arms

are at equal length so there is no
strain, a strap is added to help with
it being bottom heavy motor to
make it easier to use.

INITIAL IDEAS

The blue is reminiscent of the

factory colour of the Alfa Romeo
Brera.

Indent within the handle for

the thumb to rest eaily without
causing pain after a while.

Placement of the
trigger and on/off
switch is easy to
reach and press.

INITIAL IDEAS

Battery powered so there is

no fuss with the cord, and is
easily located on the end of the
handle

FINAL IDEA

Combining three of the ideas together I have taken the circular handle and merged with the rectangular
handle to become a steering wheel style handle to rid back pain for the user.
Having two triggers is a safety feature as if the user lets go of one it will automatically shut the strimmer
off. So both need to be pressed in order for it to work. Similar to flappy paddles found in Alfa Romeo cars.

THE BRIEF

As a project done in my spare time, I was looking at small spaces

and how a multifunctional product can be beneficial within a confined
space. Typically, I was looking into furniture such as desks and/or
tables for university accommodation and flats for the product.

BRAND RESEARCH
IKEA is well known as being the worlds largest
furniture retailer for ready-to-assemble flat pack
furniture, therefore it was fitting to brand my
project in accordance of IKEA. Looking at their
multifunctional tables and see what they sell and
what is included in each product inspired me to
think small and exactly what the dual function is.
This is where I started to look into student
accomodation as this is an area which hasnt
been provided with multifunctional products.
IKEA is very well known for selling flatpack furniture and this is the direction I will
go, targeting students living in university
accomodation or flats. Some key words that I
will need take into account include:
Multifunctional
Simple
Easy-to-assemble
Inexpensive
Minimal amount of parts
Modern

INITIAL IDEAS

A coffee table that can flipped up and can be a place to sit and do
work, there is also storage space underneath to keep books or
magazines, therefore doesnt exactly have to be in accomodation but
can be put in a lounge perhaps.
Good thing about this is that it can be used either side, there is no set
face it needs to sit on.

When in work table mode

books/keyboard can be
placed into this slot.

INITIAL IDEAS

This design is a much more simple and minimalist approach with the
same functionality, different variations of how it looks as a coffee table
and a laptop/work table. Having the storage space to the side allows
more room on the top to place items as well as storage when turned
into a work table.

INITIAL IDEAS

A radical change to the coffee table where only a small part of it is flat
and the rest is storage. However this makes it perfect for the base as
the V shape gives good balance and structural rigidity for the design.
With the V at the bottom it easily allows users to sit comfortably along
with leg space.

FINAL IDEA
The final idea, what I am calling the CofVee Table, blends the three ideas together to create a functional and
aesthetically pleasing, simple coffee table that transforms into a work table by simply lifting it up onto its legs;
the gap at the front allows the user to do this easily. When in this position it gives masses amount of leg room to
the user and an indent in which to put a laptop or books into so that it doesnt move out of place.
The V shape, made from glass, allows for storage such as books and magazines. The rest of the table will be
made out of MDF and then varnished to give a shiny and protective finish.
