Laboratory Techniques and Lab Safety

Objectives:

Measure the mass of solid substances.

Measure a volume of water.
Separate components of a mixture through filtration.

Materials:
table salt
ring
sand
funnel
distilled water
2 scoops
100ml graduated
cylinder
stirring rod
250mL beakers (2)
filter paper
100mL beakers (2)
water bottle
balance
watch glass
ring stand

Pre-Lab Questions:
1. Working alone . . .
2. When handling excess . . .
3. A chemical spill . . .

Procedure:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Add small amount of salt to small beaker.

Determine the mass of the salt.
Transfer the salt to the 250mL beaker.
Add small amount of sand to small beaker.
Determine the mass of the sand.
Transfer the sand to the same 250mL beaker.
Using the graduated cylinder, measure out 80mL of distilled
water.
8. Pour water into the 250mL beaker and stir for one minute.
9. Filter the solution using a proper filtration system.
10.
Clean area when finished.

Hypothesis:
The safety precautions that will be needed in this lab are . . .

Analyze and Conclude:

1. The excess reagents were not put back into the original reagent
bottles because . . .
2. The dry mixtures showed . . . After the water was added . . .
3. The samples were placed into smaller containers . . .
4. Cleaning up is important because . . . The teacher can . . .
5. Safety is . . . Protecting your eyes . . .
6. Some errors that may have occurred are . . .

Real World Chemistry:

1. Eating, drinking, or gum chewing is not allowed . . .

2. Washing hands is important due to . . .
3. You never work alone because . . .

Conclusion:

The safety precautions I used in this lab were . . . They were very
important because . . .
