RED CRESCENT FIRST AID TIPS

Recovery Position
The recovery position is essential for an unconscious casualty. It keeps the airway
open while allowing fluids to drain from the mouth, for example in the case of
vomiting. However, if you suspect a fracture or a broken neck, moving the victim
may be harmful.

Kneel down beside the victim

and tilt her head back to open
her airway. Straighten her legs. Pull
her right arm down and tuck it
under her body. Place her left arm
on her right shoulder, and her left
leg over her right.

Edge closer to the victim. Place

one hand on her shoulder and
the other hand on her hip and
carefully roll her towards you until
she is on her side. You may need to
use your left hand to support her
head as you move her.

Tilt her head back to keep

her airway open. Move her
upper leg so that it is bent at a
right angle at both hip and knee.
Tuck her left hand under her
cheek, and make sure her right
arm is extended behind her body.

Call for medical help. Keep checking her pulse and

her breathing as you wait beside her.
