Event provides support, hope

for those affected by suicide
By Jeremy Hartley
jhartley@centredaily.com

COLLEGE TOWNSHIP
When Penn State junior
Ashley Bello learned her
best friend died, she said her
world shattered into a million pieces.
Barely holding tears back,
Bello, who works with the
Universitys Active Minds
program, said she met TJ in
kindergarten, and the two
became inseparable. But he
hid his depression from his
friends, and a diagnosis
came too late to help him.
TJ took his life on a cold
December day five years
ago, she said, after which,
her life became a blur. It
wasnt until she spoke with
his mother, who encouraged
her to carry on, that she decided to force herself to
move on with her life.
Since that day Ive lived
with a broken heart, but Ive
heard that a broken heart allows light to shine in, she
said. Hes the sunshine that
disappeared that winter,
who makes these cold winter days not that dreary.
Bello spoke Thursday as
part of an evening of hope,
healing and remembrance
during Centre County Suicide Prevention and Awareness Day. Hosted at the
Lemont Granary, the eve-

ning featured speakers, poetry and music to give survivors of suicide support and
the strength to cope.
The evening was arranged by the Jana Marie
Foundation. Started in 2012
in the memory of Jana Vicere, founder Marisa Vicere
said, the foundation works
to empower young people to
make positive choices and
practice self-respect.
The foundation worked
with several organizations,
including Active Minds,
which empowers students to
change the perception about
mental health on college
campuses; the college and
teenage community; and the
American Foundation for
Suicide Prevention to put
the evening together, she
said. The foundation works
through these partnerships
to help promote mental
health through art and creative expression.
When theres a suicide, it
complicates the grieving
process, Tides program director Holly Torbic said. It
leaves questions unanswered the whys and what ifs
leaving the survivors to
put the pieces back together.

Tides offers support for

families coping with the
death of someone special,
volunteer Evelyn Wald said,
assisting children, teens and
their adult family members.
Wald lit three candles at
the evenings end, representing the pillars of hope,
healing and remembrance,
saying the speakers words
hold the hope for survivors
in the audience. In the case
of healing, she said, its a
long process which sometimes leaves scars, but it
happens and will continue
for those who need it.
Finally, Torbic said, sometimes its difficult to remember those who have gone because of the stigma of how
their lives ended. Survivors
have permission to remember those lost and hope their
memory carries on.
Evenings like tonight can
be bittersweet, but offer a
chance to remember those
we have lost, Vicere said.
We have a chance to come
together as a community
and support survivors and
provide hope to those who
need it, leaning on one another.

IDOMENI, Greece As
if fear, hunger, thirst, worry
and exhaustion were not
enough to endure, new trials
emerged Thursday for those
on the 1,000 mile-plus trek into Europe: torrential rains
and thick mud.
About 7,000 refugees and
migrants, including many
families lugging young children, braved relentless
downpours Thursday to
cross Greeces northern
border into Macedonia in
what Greek police said was
the largest single wave they
had seen so far.
At the northern village of
Idomeni, crowds gathered
before dawn, using anything
they could find plastic
sheeting, garbage bags,
hooded jackets, even a

beach umbrella in a futile

attempt to stay dry. Sneakers
stuck in the mud. Rain
dripped off hoods and caps.
All were soaked to the skin.
Parents held their children aloft in the rain, to make
sure the Macedonian police
would see them and let them
through checkpoints. Other
mud-splattered
children
dragged luggage and stumbled into rain-filled potholes,
climbing out crying.
By early afternoon, all had
crossed but thousands more
were on their way, heading
to the Greek mainland in ferries.
The surge came after
Greek authorities managed
to register about 17,000 people on the eastern island of
Lesbos in just a few days,
speeding their trip north.
Greeces caretaker government chartered two extra

Greece, Italy and Hungary
