Ratio, comparing similar properties.

Let us look at three cubes and find the volume of each in mL

a
1 cm
Volume = mL

b
2 cm
Volume = mL

c
3 cm
Volume = mL

How many times the volume of a is the volume of b?

How many times the volume of b is the volume of c?
How many a will fit in b? in c?
The volume of b is 8 times the volume of a.
Here we use a ratio to compare the volume of one
object to the volume of another object.

Lab 2: Ratio
Well do a lab to understand more on ratios.
You need a ruler or a tape measure marked in
cm to do this experiment.
If you dont have one, print out this page and cut out the
ruler given below and use it do your measurements.

Measure the length of your work table in cm.

Length of the table = .. cm
Measure the width of your work table in cm.
Width of the table = .. cm

Obtain the area of the table in cm2

Area of the table = .. cm2
Now obtain the area of the table in m2 as follows:
Length of the table = .. m
Width of the table = .. m
Area of the table = .. m2
Now measure the area of your room in m2
Length of the room = .. cm
Width of the room = .. cm
Area of the room = .. m2

= .. m
= .. m

1. How many tables can be arranged in the

room without wasting space?

Number of tables =

If the height of your room is 3.2 m, calculate

the volume of air in your room.
Volume = area height
If the volume of a basket ball is 0.008 m3, how many
basketballs will fit in your room?

Density is the property of an object.
Density of water is 1 g/mL

Lab 3: To measure density

mass
Density =
volume
You are given a small piece of
copper, a measuring cylinder and
an electronic balance.
Write a paragraph on how you will
use these equipment to measure the
density of copper.

If the copper piece has a mass of 28 g and

a volume of 3.2 cm3, what is its density?
(a) in g/cm3?

(b) in g/mL? (a) in kg/m3?
