Navigating the System

The Effect of Family Experience on Resiliency

Dr. Martin Brokenleg

Jonathan Rudin

Family life is the foundational strength in resiliency. This session

The presentation will focus on the realities faced by those affected considers the strengths of family life and the needs of youth facing the
with FASD who are involved in the justice system. In addition to contemporary youth worker.
addressing the challenges these individuals may face, strategies for
navigating the system will also be discussed.
Cause it's not my Fault-Understanding FASD in Children and Youth
Allan Mountford
"It takes a village to raise a child" is especially true for children with
FASD. It is appropos that The Ministry of Children and Youth Services
has recognized FASD as a major issue in Ontario. The community must
understand the primary, secondary and tertiary characteristics of
FASD, and the ramifications of this hidden, brain-based disability on
the life of affected children and youth. Participants will enjoy this
fast-paced workshop full of humorous anecdotes and real-life success
stories of FASD.

How 4 Mothers Came Together to Become a Community of Support:

Together We Are Stronger
Debbie Gray, Cherie Coulombe, Debbie Michaud, Rhonda Konrad
Raising children & adults with an FASD has it many rewards and
challenges. Nine years ago 4 women who came together to work on a
project became each other's supporters, advocates, and stronghold
during times of joy, crisis, grief & loss and the daily demands of
parenting. This team has been able to reach out and educate the local
community and have also reached communities across Canada.

Flying with Broken Wings is an online support group that has changed
the way people relate to, and with adults living with FASD. Starting
with a strong base of adults living on the spectrum of various ages, the
mix of parents and caregivers with professionals builds a group
dynamic that has enabled an open sharing which gives voice to each
of these very different groups. Inclusion and support while educating
members in the latest news and information regarding FASD is also a
huge component of the group, as well sharing ideas, strategies
gleaned from a wide variety of credible sources, and personal
perspective as a backdrop to all of this. Together, we forge ahead with
new understandings of often difficult concepts, which people are
implementing in their daily lives. And the best part of all? It works.
Now, here, for the first time we talk about what makes the magic
happen and share ideas that may help others as well.

Victim, Survivor to Thurivor - Breaking the FASD Chain

Betty Cornelius
In this presentation, Betty will talk on the generations behind her
family with FASD. She will share personal stories of how she was
encouraged to drink while pregnant with her son and how her son,
not knowing any better, allowed his partner to drink when pregnant.
She will also speak on the importance of peer support, advocating
and setting up local FASD and kinship support groups.
THE KEY'S TO FASD SUCCESS: Essential strategies to achieve less
stress and more success at school, work or home
Jeff Noble
For parents and caregivers to be successful (and sane) in this lifetime
career that they have selflessly devoted themselves to, there are
specific elements that will guarantee a winning outcome: Respite,
Training, Coaching and Understanding Grief and Loss.
Participants will be provided with an intensive overview of the realities of raising/caring for someone with an FASD and the unique demands and challenges that professionals and systems often overlook.
Participants are provided with practical, research based theories and
strategies that will focus on the FASD caregiver and building capacity

The FASD Clinic at NEO Kids, Health Sciences North started in 2011 in
collaboration with the FASD North Eastern Aboriginal Partnership
Project (NEAP). The FASD Clinic at NEO Kids is very fortunate to have
a dedicated multi-disciplinary team that provides comprehensive
assessment consistent with the Canadian FASD Diagnostic Guidelines
(2016). While the clinic has experienced an exponential increase in
referrals in 2016 we are committed to contributing to FASD
education and awareness so that all children who may be experiencing difficulties from prenatal alcohol exposure have access to early
diagnosis and therefore early intervention and support.
Our presentation and panel discussion aims to increase
awareness and educate the diverse audience on the FASD assessment
process and how the team comes together specifically to formulate a
diagnosis of FASD. This material will be presented not in a scientific
way, but rather in an interactive manner that is engaging and easily
understandable to all participants of the conference. To enhance the
presentation we will host a panel presentation and discussion with a
strong First Nation perspective about the challenges and benefits of
navigating the FASD diagnostic process. The panel will consist of 3 to
4 participants including a patient, family, child advocate.
Sault Ste. Marie Community Court and Supporting People with FASD
Melody Hawdon & Dana Peterson
We will be looking at the Algoma Justice System and the development
of the Sault Ste. Marie Community Court. A journey through the
progression and growth of including people with an F.A.S.D diagnosis
and people who are only suspected of being affected by pre-natal
exposure. It's with great pride that we will share the growth and
positive outcomes that have derived from the changes to our local
justice system.
