Theories of Failure

1.

Consider the following case of plain stress, x = 2/3 x 103 kgf/cm2, y = 4/3 x
103 kgf/cm2 , and xy = 1/3 x 103. If the yield stress is 4/3 x 103 kgf/cm2 in a uniaxial tensile test, determine whether there is yielding according to Tresca and
Von-Mises yield criteria or not.

2.

A material yield at 2000 kgf/cm2 in uni-axial tension and a thin wall pressure
vessel is fabricated out of this. If the radius is 2 cm; find the pressure at which the
material fails according to (i) Trasca and (ii) Von-mises criteria.

3.

A critical element develops the principle stress 1, 2 and 3 in the ratio of 5:

2: -1, i.e. the stresses are 5p, 2p and p, where p is the parameter. Such loadings
are called radial. If this element is subjected to this loading condition, determine
the maximum magnitudes the may reach stress before yielding (a) according to
Von-Mises yield criterion, (b) according to Tresca yield criterion. Assume that the
material yields in tension at 60 MPa.

4.

A metal bar is being compressed along the x-axis between two rigid walls such
that 3 = 0 and 2 = 0. This process causes an axial stress 1 and no shear
stresses. Determine the apparent yield value of 1 if the material is in a
conventional compression test exhibits a yield strength yp and Poissons ratio .
Assume that the material is governed by the Von-Mises yield condition. Find an
alternative expression if the Tresca yield condition is postulated.

5.

A bolt of 20 mm diameter is subjected to an axial pull of 20 kN and a shear force

of 15 kN. Determine the factor of safety against failure based on various theories,
if the yield strength of the material is 230 MPa and Poissons ratio is 0.3.

6.

The load on a bolt consists of an axial pull of 10 kN together with a transverse

shear force of 5 kN. Estimate the diameter of the bolt required according to (a)
maximum principle stress theory, (b) maximum shear stress theory, (c) strain
energy theory, (d) shear strain energy theory. Elastic limit in tension is 270
N/mm2, and the factor of safety of 3 is to be applied. Poissons ratio = 0.3.
