What is Social Studies: Social studies is
the integrated study of the social sciences
and humanities to promote civic
competence. Within the school program,
social studies provides coordinated,
systematic study drawing upon such
disciplines as anthropology, archaeology,
economics, geography, history, law,
philosophy, political science, psychology,
religion, and sociology, as well as

I Say
My notes, commentary
The standards and the definition of social
studies dont exactly match up. The standards
do not say anything about archaeology,
geography, law, etc. The standards just give a
brief introduction to the world of social studies.

appropriate content from the humanities,

mathematics, and natural sciences.

Standards: Represent the social studies

knowledge and skills needed to make a
successful transition to post- secondary
education, the workplace and civic life.
What is Social Studies: The primary
purpose of social studies is to help young
people develop the ability to make
informed and reasoned decisions for the
public good as citizens of a culturally
diverse, democratic society in an
interdependent world.

What is Social Studies: The more

accurately the K12 social studies program
addresses the contemporary conditions of
real life and of academic scholarship, the
more likely such a program is to help
students develop a deeper understanding
of how to know, how to apply what they
know, and how to participate in building a
future.

The standards match up with what the primary

purpose of social studies is, which is good. This
basically means that this content standard is
one of the standards that are almost perfect for
the standards of social studies.

Connections to previous MR:

1) I feel like if the kids knew these standards before diving into the subject of social studies, maybe
they wouldnt hate it so much. I think this because if they know how these social studies concepts
will apply to their everyday lives, they would pay more attention to it.
2) If we could also incorporate some more classes such as an archaeology class or anthropology
class in high schools, then tie those into the common core social studies programs, students
would also find more fun in social studies related classes.
