History, government, economics, and

geography are more than just looking at the
past; it is learning from what has happened to
understand what is happening now. It is
important to teach this and have students
understand this in order to make social studies

I think that this is a very good point about
social studies. There are so many parts of
purpose the promotion of civic
competence-which is the knowledge, skills, social studies in the classroom, but one thing
that they all have in common is that they are

able to assume "the office of citizen" (as
citizens. Students take classes like history and
Thomas Jefferson called it) in our
government so that they can learn what the

The more accurately the K12 social

studies program addresses the
contemporary conditions of real life and of
academic scholarship, the more likely such
a program is to help students develop a
deeper understanding of how to know, how
to apply what they know, and how to
participate in building a future.

I believe that in order to successfully teach

social studies, a teacher must relate it to the
real world. When they students have
something to relate the material to they will
better understand it and be able to apply it.

Connections to previous MR: Both of these articles talk about the standards and what is expected from
a social studies teacher. They both have a lot in common of what they expect. It is talked a lot about
having the content relate to todays world. I think that this is very important to have students get a true
understanding of what they are being taught. Also, I think that by relating it today it will help the
students become better citizens, which is something that is talked about.
