Lesson: Solving Problems on Properties of Parallelograms

Date: January 26, 2016
I.

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students must be able to:
a) Use properties to find the measures of the angles, sides and other quantities involving
parallelograms.
b) Solve for the missing measures of a given parallelograms.
c) Show active participation and collaboration with the group.

Teaching Strategies and Procedures

Teachers Activity
A. Daily Routine

Students Activity

1. Prayer
Class, please all stand and let us pray.
2. Greetings
Good morning class!
3. Classroom Management

Good Morning Maam!

Before you take your seats, I request

everyone to check the alignment of your
chairs and pick those litters under your
chair.
4. Checking of Attendance
Class secretary, do we have any absentee
for today?
5. Review of the past lesson
Before we move on to our next lesson, let
us first recall what we have discussed
yesterday.

None, Maam.

If you really understood and if you really

listened to me, what was our lesson
yesterday?
Can anyone state to me the properties of
parallelogram?
Maam our lesson yesterday is about properties of a
parallelogram.

Very good. It seems that you really

remembered and understand our lesson
yesterday.
B. Learning Tasks
1.1 Motivation
Okay, now to make you more alive and to
boost your energy. I have here a video
song. Class, I want you to sing along with
the song.

In a parallelogram, any two opposite sides

are congruent.
In a parallelogram, any two opposite
angles, are congruent.
In a parallelogram, any two consecutive
angles are supplementary.
The diagonals of a parallelogram bisect
each other.
A diagonal of a parallelogram forms two
congruent triangles.

(playing: I am parallelogram by Peter

Weatherall)
How did you find the video or the song?
What can you say?
What is the video song all about?

(the students will have the lyrics)

Very good. Class, it is important to

remember all the properties of
parallelogram because we are going to use
it in our new lesson for today.
1.2 Activity
On our next activity, let us divide the class
into four groups. I have here an activity
cards that I will give for each group. But
before that, I have a problem to tell. Please
listen carefully.
Class, are you familiar with stained glass?
Okay, I want you to picture yourselves as a
stained glass designer. There would be a
client asks you to make a stained glass for
his office. He wants that each piece of
stained glass is in the shape of
parallelogram. You needed to be sure that
the pattern for cutting the pieces of glass
was in the shape of a parallelogram.
Is it clear to you?
This is the representation of the piece of

regarding with the video song)
It is about the characteristics/properties of
parallelogram.

stained glass.

Yes, Maam.

T
MATH

To make sure that the stained glass is in the

shape of a parallelogram, each group will
answer the questions in your activity card.
Please answer it for only 5 minutes. Do
your yell if you are finish. I am randomly
choose or call two representatives from
your group to explain your answer.

Yes, maam

Well done class! Lets give yourselves a

round of applause.
2. Analysis
Based from our activity, what did you do to
make sure that the piece of stained glass is
in the shape of parallelogram?
Very good.
In finding the measurements of the given
part of the parallelogram, what is your
basis that help you to solve it?
Exactly right!

(the students will answer the questions on the

activity card for each group. Two representatives
per group will explain their answer.)

As I said before, it is important that you

remembered the properties of the
parallelogram.
From what we have done in our activity,
what do you think is our lesson for today
all about?
Very good.
Our lesson for today is all about solving
problems on properties of parallelograms.

Maam, we make sure that the measurement of the

given part of stained glass is accurate.

3. Abstraction
Now, we are going to find the measures of
the angles, sides and other quantities
involving parallelograms using its
properties.
I have here another illustration of
parallelogram.

Maam, we used properties of parallelogram to find

the missing measurement.

P
HOPE

Please read the given problem.

First, where is

Maam, our lesson for today is about solving

problems on properties of parallelogram.

HO
and EP ?

What did you observe with these sides?

Correct! These are the opposite sides.
Based from these opposite sides, what is
the property of parallelogram will you
apply to solve the given problem?
Very good. Then, what will be our
equation?
Can anyone of you solve it here on the
board?
Well done. We have now the value of x.
Next, we are going to find how long

HO
and EP . What we are going to
do to find the value of

HO
and EP ?

Who would like to solve it here again on

the board?

Well done. We have found that the value of

x=5,

HO
=10 and EP =10.

Okay, I have another given from the same

figure. Please read.
Where is

If

HO=2
x

and

is the value of x?

(the student points the

EP=x
+5 , what

?
HO

EP
?

HO
and EP )

O and P ?

What did you observe with these angles?

What property of parallelogram will you
apply regarding to these angles?
What is the meaning of supplementary?

Maam, they are opposite sides.

Maam in a parallelogram, any two opposite sides

are congruent.

Very good. Then what will be our

equation?
Who would like to continue solving the
equation? Find first the value of x.

2 x =x+5

2 x =x+5

Next, find the value of O and P .

2 x x=5

Any volunteer?

x=5

Maam, we will substitute the value of x which is 5

to the equation.

Is your classmates answers correct?

How will you make sure that his/her
answer is correct?

HO=2
x

Very good.

HO=2(5)

Now I am going to draw diagonal on the

same figure.

HO=10

O
G

EP=x
+5

EP=(
5)+5

EP=10

HOPE

We have diagonal

HO
and EP ,

bisect each other at G.

Please read another given problem.

If m O=x20

and m

P=2 x+ 40 , what is x? m O?
What property of parallelogram satisfy the
figure and the given problem?

m P?

What is the meaning of bisect?

(the student will point out the given angles)

So what will be our equation?

They are two consecutive angles.

In a parallelogram, any two consecutive
angles are supplementary.

First, find the value of a.

Next, find the value of

HG
and

It is the sum of two angles equal to 180

.
PG
x+ 20+2 x + 40=180

x+ 20+2 x + 40=180
x+ 2 x=180 2040
Now, we have the value of

HG
and

.
PG
What we are going to do to find

HP
?

3 x 120
=
3
3
x= 40

O=x +20
What will be the answer?

O=(40)+20

Excellent.

O=60

Class, we are through with the topic.

Always remember that you should
remember the properties of parallelogram
for you to easily solve the missing
measures or value of the part of the given
figure.

P=2 x+ 40

P=2( 40)+ 40
P=80+ 40

Did you understand the lesson?

P=120

Do you have any questions, comments or

reactions regarding to our lesson?
Okay, now we will proceed to our next
activity to test if you really understand our
lesson.

Yes maam.
Maam, if we add 60
