The harassment and humiliation of Polands Jewish population began as soon as
Germany began the invasion and occupation. German SS (Schutzstaffel) soldiers stop
a religious Jewish man in the street and use scissors to cut off his beard. This type of
humiliation was a common practice amongst the SS in particular. Warsaw, Masovian

Dead inmates at the newly liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, one still
clutching his tin used for carrying water, lie sprawled over a heap of straw as British
relief efforts get under way. When British and Canadian forces advanced on BergenBelsen, the German Army negotiated a truce and exclusion zone around the camp to
prevent the spread of typhus, which was rampant within the camp. When the British
and Canadians finally entered the camp on 15 April 1945 they discovered thousands of
unburied bodies and (including satellite camps) at least 53,000 starving and sick
inmates. Although liberated, many inmates continued to succumb to disease and

Belarusian citizens are made to gather and witness the execution of suspected
partisans in Minsk. Olga Fyodorovna Sherbatsevich, a nurse at the 3rd Minsk
Childrens Polyclinic, was publicly hanged with two other suspected partisans in front
of the National Academy of Science of Belarus; each bore a placard stating, We are
partisans and have shot at German troops in both German and Russian.
Sherbatsevich was accused of aiding wounded Soviet soldiers, officers and partisans,
although there are no German records of her ever firing at German soldiers. The boy in
the foreground looking at the camera is thought to be her 14-year-old nephew
Vyacheslav Kovalevich, who happened to be passing through the area on the way to
the cinema. That same day, Sherbatsevichs 17-year-old son Volodya was hanged,
along with a 16-year-old girl who is thought to be named Maria Masha Bruskina, and
World War I veteran Kiril Trus, for their involvement in partisan activities. Minsk,
